I would imagine he means focusing on records that aren't new releases when he refers to the past, that is how I read it. Those records were of course in many instances new discoveries to those there at the time but still from the past. Other music scenes were concerned with records of the day.

Someone complained on the Hull Soul Night lookback that they wanted Judy Street and Dobie Gray type records as they filled the floor and I said in reply what a sad sorry excuse for a once cool scene the northern soul scene has become.

Butch featuring some great stuff in his sets of late. What new stuff there is mind (and there is some), there isn't the audience, only infrequently, and the retro bunch have no patience whatsoever so there is no chance of breaking the record unless half a dozen or so Dj's get a record. Some records take 5, 10 or even 15 years to break out big, Johnny Praye and Tommy and the Derby's to such examples. The "newies" do not stand a chance on today's backward thinking retro scene. Until the retro scene fizzles away when all those who returned in the 90's etc are too old then the scene doesn't stand a chance, youngsters do not want to be associated with people older than their grandparents in some cases.

According to Ady in a previous topic he sold his "Bunky" one to JV. Wasn't there also an acetate by supposedly Ritchie Parker, not very good if I remember rightly, have it on a disc somewhere.

They are all rare in the grand scheme of things just some are rarer than others. I agree with Nev for the amount of copies about and what you see for sale on a regular basis it should sell for half what it does. It's a classic though so will always sell.

Why do I need to ask John? I know what John thinks, talked to him about it when he auction it. It is obviously the rarest of the Nolan Chance releases, anyone knows that. Pretty sure the Bunky release was done from the same stampers as the constellation release afterwards for some self promotion, maybe to get a release overseas? I can't find the topic started by guy who found one in Aus.

It shouldn't be though Steve. Any newcomer has the best of near on 50 years of this wonderful scene, why should it come down to 70 records or 100 records, the same records week in week out. This isn't even oldies vs newies., most of them are oldies now but there is at least 25 years worth of records if you just count up to the end of the 80's. There is so much good stuff discovered in recent years by the likes of Kent that should satisfy most dancers. Any newcomer hasn't a clue about classics, Wigan, Stafford, Torch etc so why do people insist on force feeding them so called anthems.....ffs why Judy Street and Dobie Gray

Want a sad sorry excuse of once "cool" scene the northern soul scene has become when all people want is Judy Street and Dobie Gray. Someone remind me what year it is? How do newcomers to the scene know what a classic is and what is not a classic? Or have they been force fed the so called top 70 anthems? What did they listen to until they decided they wanted to be part of the northern soul scene? The same top 40 for 40 years by any chance? There is more to this scene than the same top 70 records, I'm just talking classics btw, I'm not even including records from post Wigan.

Like Derek remember it from the 80's but no one really persevered with it, guess there was so much stuff around then plenty slipped under the radar.

Just ripping some CD's to the computer and this is on the very first CD Soul Supply did (1988) "Rare Soul on CD Volume 1". The brief sleeve notes says I got rid of any Soul Supply LP's I had in the earlyish 90's but I presume this is the same as the one on the LP? It sounds like the one in the second video Bob posted.
