Would This Be Classed As An "inspired" Djing?
Chalky replied to Northernjordan's topic in All About the SOUL
It is ridiculous to suggest an artist who has had commercial success should be ignored and I wasn't for a second suggesting such nor am I tainting such artists, far from it. I am suggesting as others have is that all-nighter music is for the rare and obscure not commercially successful records like "I Say A Little Prayer". Yes, I know some have slipped through the net but by and large I wouldn't expect to go to an all-nighter and listen to records that sold in their millions and are heard on commercial radio playlists every day. Something from Aretha from left field that failed to make the grade commercially, that would be deemed inspiring by some although I would guess not by many others as her less commercial stuff has and still is played by the more discerning soul fan/dj. Why a DJ would want to resort to commercial soul is beyond me, there's tons of decent northern out there. No wonder I am fast losing my interest in travelling anywhere. I can go to local club nights hand hear such records so why would I want to travel and spend a fortune expecting to hear the best this scene has to offer and then have to suffer commercial soul records? -

It would be late(ish) 80's George sold it, he might read this if not can ask. He also had first copy of George Pepp.
-
First played to my knowledge by George Sharp who sold it to Roger. There are a few other copies around I believe, know of at least two. Always believed Jimmy Williams the same guy just a different take, will have to compare again.
-
Nice, wouldn't mind a copy if anyone has one reasonable. See plenty of copies but not cheap.

Chalky replied to Northernjordan's topic in All About the SOUL
Chances are the floor would be packed regardless, at the peak times at a nighter or soul night whatever is played will get a response if it is classic northern or club soul. It doesn't make it inspired DJing though just because you haven't heard it for sometime, something from totally left field would be inspired. -
It's a ridiculous argument really, a messenger bag with 20 Lps is nothing and you could always buy one of the trolley bags. We should have a new years resolution to ban ovo topics, getting ridiculous. The vast majority of us know where we are going, what the DJ's will be playing and really couldn't care less what others think.

Mick was playing the Springers at early Lifelines. -
If it is unissued then I and many like me don't have a problem with them, if there is an original format out here then it would be that that would take preference. Again you wouldn't get many booking s playing reissues by the OVO brigade.
-
I don't know anyone who believes the Stardust release to be legitimate unless they need justification to play it in one of their sets? I doubt you would get many bookings from the OVO brigade playing Stardust 45's.
-
It was confirmed by Sidney Barnes way back in the earl 2000's, would be 2002/3? when he was at the Dome, someone played it when it was still played as Patti Austin and his ears pricked up and said hey this is the Ad-Libs. It has since been released on a CD "The Ad-Libs The Blue Cat Years" complete with studio chatter whilst laying down the track and another alternate take.
-
Depends if you just want to buy just what you like or you wanna label collect. If the latter than chooses a label to get started with.

I would have thought if the acetate is New York/Detroit then I wouldn't have though it was the Apollas. -

Chalky replied to Stompingsevens's topic in All About the SOUL
I would imagine there are is a copy or two of the Springers in collections from the 80's etc. George's copy not been mentioned in the coun since he mentioned it, has Tim still got one, Butch and other collectors who have been in the loop since it was first played. -

Chalky replied to Northernjordan's topic in All About the SOUL
Why not, she gets plenty of exposure on mainstream pop middle of the road stations like radio 2, certainly her better known tracks like I Say Little Prayer. As i said i wouldn't expect to hear this at any all-nighter. -

The Stafford Story continues with a nod to 100 club and 6t's co founder Ady Croasdell. He did play a big part in the mid 80's soul scene with the many unissued gems that not only did Ady play but they went to Keb and Guy as well. Here is a podcast made up partly by what I have on a recording of Ady at the TOTW and other tracks he was featuring in his sets back then. https://www.soulunderground.co.uk/StaffordTOTW/files/07d52bb5a9ba90b952a8a518ffa8d352-46.html Tommy Hunt - Pretty Part Of You - Unissued Sammy Ambrose - Welcome To Dreamsville - Unissued Marvelows - Your Little Sister - ABC Paramount Bunny Sigler - For Crying Out Loud - Decca Moments - Baby Baby Need You - Hog Hector Rivera - I Want A Chance For Romance - Barry Melba Moore - Magic Touch - Unissued Peggy Woods - Love Is Gonna Get You - Unissued Maxine Brown - I Want A Guarantee - Unissued Alt Vocal Trends - Not too Old To Cry - ABC Paramount Tommy Hunt - New Neighbourhood - Unissued Wally Cox - This Man Wants You - Mono Take Chuck Flamingo & The Kansas City Playboys - Whats My Chances - Rojac Chuck Jackson - Little By Little Maxine Brown - It’s Torture - Unissed Little Tommy Baby Can't You See -Sound Of Soul Drapers - Your Love Has Gone Away - Gee Tony Mason - Take Good Care - RCA Rubies - Spanish Boy - VJ Harvey Averne Dozen - Never Learned To Dance - Uptite Two People - Stop Leave My Heart Alone - Revue Steinways - You’ve Been Leading Me On - Oliver Roosevelt Grier - Pizza Pie Man - D-Town The Megatrons Detroit Sound Laurie Boston Hitesmen - Let It Ride - MTA Johnny Maestro - Stepping Out Of The Picture - Scepter -
Ray Agee - I'm Losing Again/ Hard Loving Woman On Cd?
Chalky replied to Stompingsevens's topic in All About the SOUL
What rubbish. Just about every record out there (apart from the exclusives and real rarities the top lads have) is on youtube, a cd or some other format, there dis no need whatsoever to resort to boots to hear them. What is this topic about? -
Ray Agee - I'm Losing Again/ Hard Loving Woman On Cd?
Chalky replied to Stompingsevens's topic in All About the SOUL
The only observation I use is if you ain't got the records leave it to someone else, there are plenty who do have the records. Or as I said buy within your budget, plenty of good records about often cheaper than boots. If all you want to do is listen, listen from a cd, too many seem far too happy to say it is ok to bootleg. -
Ray Agee - I'm Losing Again/ Hard Loving Woman On Cd?
Chalky replied to Stompingsevens's topic in All About the SOUL
We've had this argument so many times, why do you feel you need to either spend thousands of pounds on a record or play bootlegs to be a DJ? If you don't have the money for. Soultown Ray Agee then look at something cheaper. Plenty of decent records that don't stretch the wallet out there. -
