  1. It is obscure on the 45 Mark.
  2. There is a lot of "Northern" related info in this book. Most of your West Coast groups get a mention. It goes year by year, release by release I think. I haven't read it front to back but I keep delving in when needing some info. P.S. I always thought it was a mine of info?

  5. The first press is very rare.
  6. There arw so many but I will go with Suspicion.
  7. I wasn't sure which one you was referring to. "So In Love" was Lifeline & 100 Club as Russ said, Andy & Butch. Other crossover type venues as Steve G had a copy as well, think it was Bass Museum night when he bought it? Andy had about 8 or 9 copies in all if I remember rightly.
  8. I mentioned this book in another topic, a must have for all you anoraks who just love information. Steve is one of the West Coast top collectors and a mine of information. His previous book L.A. R&B Vocal Groups 1945-1965 is a hard to find and very sought after. It is only available on US amazon but I got my copy from there and it arrived in about three days. Steve Propes "Old School" 77 Years of Southern California R&B Vocal Group Harmony Records 1934-2011 https://www.amazon.com/SCHOOL-Southern-California-Harmony-Records/dp/1461076927 This is what is on amazon.... OLD SCHOOL Southern California R&B & Vocal Group Harmony Records 1934 - 2011 by Stephen C. Propes. A never before published chronological compendium of musicians and/or groups, titles, original record labels, local and select out-of-town radio and record store chart positions...combined with the stories of the records, either from those involved or from original research...and in notable cases, an idea of the value of these discs. Popular music in Southern California has a surprisingly short history prior to World War II. Though a recording scene existed in the early 1920s, for all intents and purposes, the aggressive recording, pressing and marketing of phonograph records in the L.A. area didn't really take hold until the 1930s, and in fact, many of these 1930s releases were party records with double-entendre themes. However, the post WWII era was a different matter. With the emergence of some L.A.-based pop and race music stars, generally with radio, nightclub or motion picture connections in the early 1940s, the serious business of recording for the mass market began in earnest. The development of rhythm and blues and soul in any major market has never been fully documented in the way this book portrays over 1,400 record releases by over 850 groups or artists described here. Many of the records featured in this work hit either the local or national popularity charts, or both, however not all records made a visit to those lists of best sellers. Some of the artists described within had spectacular multi-decade careers, but many of them were of the one-off or best case, one hit variety. Though the work concentrates on rhythm and blues and soul music, there are other genres, such as novelty, jazz, gospel and pop sprinkled in when the story supports inclusion.
  9. No mate, not sure if Andy can scan it or take a photo. Will ask.

  11. According to Steve Propes book "Old School 77 Years Of Southern California R&B Vocal Group Harmony Records 1934 - 2011 (A must have book for all anoraks IMO) the Furys according to Baritone Jerome Evans came out of the Cyclones on Forward with Charles Jackson & Ray Daugherty.
  12. I watched the Elvis one and it was a great 90 minutes viewing. The Motown one should be every bit as good. Who chooses the panel that votes and how representative are they
  13. Whilst it could be a good think, well any exposure is good I guess, it will be totally mainstream and can't see it going much beyond the chart stuff. Be interesting if could get something like Suspicion or Forever In My Heart in there?
  14. Ace have had a download on site for sometime.
  15. Anyone have a copy of this LP? No daft prices.
  16. Terry/gordon just choked on whatever he is drinking, he loves this......not
  17. I know, but if talkng bout a big record at leat give those responsible the credit, in this case both of them....who is talkin about the 80's?
  18. I've just done a post on my blog for the release as well.... https://chalkster101.wordpress.com/2014/03/29/kentpied-piper-september-jones-voo-doo-madamoiselle/ I hope Kent/Ace can track the bootleggers down.
  19. No I give credit where credit is due, something you fail to do. I don't deny Karl played it but I doubt you ever heard Dean play it so no idea of it's popularity then and IMO he deserves just as much credit as Karl for this record.
  20. I know Andy Dyson got a handful off Roy Roberts and they went to the likes of Butch, Steve G, Andy himself etc etc.
  21. Which venue was playing Roy Roberts first Matt, I presume you mean So In Love?
  22. Ravins has been massive for Andy Dyson last few years alongside Henry C. Paul Vann "One Track Mind" as well. Proffs finally getting the recognition it deserves. Saints on Wigwam. Stormie Wynters "Lifesaver" Hopkins Brothers "Shake Sheri" Cosmos Band "Third Eye" Roy Roberst "So In Love" Bernard Drake on La Louisianne
  23. Don't forget postage is included when customs work out the value.
  24. It's all about opinions Phil and we all have different ones but that is the beauty of this scene. I would agree to me as well some of those listed are poor but to others they are great. I love Sir Joe (both sides and the Precisions). Tommy Dent I would agree with you, just a mess of a tune. But it would be boring if we all liked the same. I can't think of one DJ, one all-nighter or soul night in any era that hasn't played duffers. Everyone has played good and bad. You will never get an hour let alone a night where every record is right up anyones street.
  25. reactivation, Dean Anderson first. Don't forget the other one, Things That A Lady. Take A Look goes back to the mid 80's though.
