  1. Depends what exposure it has had in the 35 years though doesn’t it I guess.
  2. First played about 1980/81
  3. Author, me, that is my website
  4. It was in every sales box in the 80s, common as muck back then.
  5. Constellations, starting to get plays Bit of an understatement as it has been hammered to death for two decades at least. Seems to be around 250/300 with one on discogs for £350. Over priced IMO.
  6. Some records have taken years to become popular but I guess it is subjective. Used to be classed as an oldie within months or even weeks at one time, record seem to hang around for a long time nowadays. There is very little upfront if that’s what you wish to call it. Basically two oldies scenes, one playing classics/oldies and the other post Wigan stuff or records ignored at the time.
  7. I don't, the term has probably been used throughout the history of the scene at times and music in general. I don't recall us actually using the term though just something that came more common place as time went on. We used Rare Soul to describe the music policy if memory serves.
  8. Still some nighters attempting to go with the "upfront" progressive attitude, 100 Club, Ady still finding some gems and Butch of course. Mick H and his Quality of Soul although I think he is having some issues with the venue so you will have to check. Burnley but again I think they have lost the venue. Soul Funktion for the funky harder edge stuff etc etc. Plenty of soul nights doing something different too, just have to look for the better nights.
  9. No, it was referring to 60s and 70s initially, unknown, semi known etc but it broadened out eventually to include the funky stuff, the funky stuff went too far IMO and had a detrimental effect on venues, certainly wasn't my preferred listening on a night out. It was simply as I said a term applied by others to differentiate the nighters in question, and later soul nights from those that played the classics. People always try and complicate matters. Half the tracks listed here, most intact wouldn't have been considered for some venues as being good enough (not saying they are bad records either). It was all an attempt to get the nighter scene back to the progressive attitude of Wigan's main room, Stafford, Blackburn, The Wilton etc etc as the nighter scene around 2000 was simply going through he motions.
  10. I agree plenty out there that can be turned from the oldies side of the scene. Thee will also always be something new to us all on all sides of the scene. By unknowns or newies I mean never had any exposure before. There are still some newies but by and large very few, certainly not many of any great quality. Unissued tapes and vault material will be the main source in the future.
  11. Yep same thing basically although today not much is cutting edge, upfront or new or any other way you look at it.
  12. The term came into being around the time Lifeline started. It was used to differentiate the nighter(s) from the oldies all-nighters at the time. Not sure who came up with it. It didn’t mean anyone particular genre. Lifeline was 60s and 70s generally. The hard edged, funky stuff came a little later although it has always been there in the mix. Never really like the term but it became commonplace when referring to any venue that played something different to the top 500 or whatever. Its all rare soul to me.
  13. You were the one being self righteous claiming others didn’t know what they were on about or what northern soul is by not liking a particular record. First of all taste is subjective, we all like different things and thank god we do otherwise it wouldn’t half be a boring scene. Secondly northern soul, as already suggested, there is no such musical genre, it is the name of a scene on which a certain type pf record is played, primarily soulful black dance music but the term or the scene embraces many different genres. A northern soul record is simply something played on the northern soul scene. As for the two records you mention, it wouldn’t bother me if I never heard them again. I’ve no desire to keep listening to the same records for 40/50 years. Would you listen to the same top 40 for that length of time or go to a night club down t’town playing the same records week in week out, no I doubt anyone would.
  14. If she had kept the disc then I would agree with you but she hasn’t. She has got soul source and Facebook to sell it for them. The topics generated, and there have been a few have over hyped the disc and given it a lot of attention.
  15. Like I said you do talk some rubbish
  16. You don’t need to hear it at a venue, it is everywhere else.
  17. The group is about records not general scene chat. This record been discussed at length. Pete isn’t even s member and hasn’t been for sometime. What a group on Facebook and cutting lathes have to do with this not sure? You have to be a member of FB to join the group in question too.
  18. we know he said that Pete, but he also said if you think it is crap you know nothing about Northern Soul...it's there in black and white. Only you see it differently.
  19. Looked to me like he was saying you don’t know what northern soul is if you think Connie Clark is crap, like I said he’s talking rubbish.
  20. Don't talk such rubbish
  21. It has never been a favourite of mine. Don't get me wrong I understand the impact it had and that it is a great Northern Soul record but there are 100s that are better. If it wasn't for the rarity I doubt we would even be discussing it.
  22. It was a great record and it does have everything you want in a Northern Soul record (so do countless others for that matter) but it has been ruined by the hammering it has had, the cheesey (and egg) adverts, the whole commercialisation that has gone with it, any credibility it had has gone.
  23. Well, tne title of the topic on here and elsewhere for starters. We all know it isn’t the rarest 45, not even possibly. Many only known copies out there and some Djs could do a set full of records just as rare or rarer if you take the variations into consideration. Plenty of other daft comments too on social media over hyping the find. I know social media is responsible but still...
  24. Sort of although I couldn’t tell you one song of his or theirs, I have no interest whatsoever in their music, well any music outside soul etc.
  25. Who is Jack White?
