It would be VG++ if it wasn't for the crack that runs from the outer edge to about 1/4 inch from the run out grooves . Surprisingly, once I eased the two edges back together, it plays all the way through without skipping and without much noise from the crack. Now this is a fairly rare record which I'm sure someone will want, and I can't bring myself to bin it. It books at 200 in Mr Manships guide so someone make me an offer please? Around 20 sound OK? HOLD Postage for 1 record to the UK as follows: 1st class - 1.25 Recorded - 2.20 (if paying by paypal this is the minimum postage) Special delivery - 5.00 (recommended for items valued at over 30) (add 20p per extra record) Johhny foreigners - I'll work the postage out depending on where you are etc.

I have to say, I've sold 3 (I think) copies of Competition on Ebay in the last 6 months and all have gone for 25-30 So I guess that is its current price

Getting mates to bid on records to push the price up is a practice known as schill-bidding (i think) and is illegal on ebay. Someone posted up a link to www.goofbay.com which has a tool to identify this practice. I must say I also think this practice is unethical, I always list at a price that I will accept to sell for, if it goes higher then fine. If you think a record is worth 100 and you paid 75 for it then why not start it at 80 or put a reserve of 80 on it? It can't sell for 30 then and it will only cost you about a quid more to do this.

Very true. A seller called bigwalt did this with copies of Little Johnny Taylor - Somewhere Down The Line. Don't know how many he had (I saw three) but he used the same picture and description each time. I "won" the first one and it turned up with writing on the label and VG instead of a clean VG++ (or similar), definitely not the same record as pictured on the listing. I got a refund but he was really bolshy about it. I told him to send me another 5 dollars to cover the postage and I'd return his record.

Is that the place that is full of LP's? Really nice but ferociously priced? I went in a similar place in New York about 6 years ago (must be the same place) and the guy behind the counter just kept saying "Which record are you looking for?" I named a few well known biggies (only one at a time, please) and each time he disappeared and came back and said "nope" I think I got p*ssed off before before he did, but it was my introduction to the strange ways of record shop owners in the US. They don't really want to sell records cos if they did, they wouldn't have anything to put in the shop would they?
-
They have a buyer protection policy, you can claim a refund if stuff doesn't arrive and you paid using PayPal, paypal take the money back off the seller. (Look for Buyer Protection" on the help part of www.paypal.com) You need to do it within 45 days of the auction. It has led to people insisting on some form of recorded delivery if you pay by PayPal cos if someone claims a refund PayPal ask the seller for proof of delivery, if the seller hasn't got it they lose the money. A few people have been ripped off by people claiming a record hasn't arrived when it has and getting a refund this way. BTW the seller of my item is hydeparkrecords! and the item is: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ADME:B:AAQ:US:1 Cheers Paul

Can't really see how that would take people away from decent venues. Any examples?

So I explained to the seller what happened, questioned the lack of stiffeners, lack of "Fragile" and "Do Not Bend" markings and also queried the use of a 12" mailer and asked what they suggest should happen next. His reply: "I would suggest writing the mail and asking why they would be bending a BOX in HALF. We've never had this happen before and we certainly didn't write PLEASE BEND on the package. It's implied that it shouldn't be bent, a presume." I Don't think a refund will be forthcoming actually. Have replied and said I consider a thin 12" mailer inadequate, will wait for a further reply before doing the neg feedback thing.I wish I'd been more dishonest and claimed it had never arrived, I could have got a refund from PayPal. CheersPaul

Others I've had are: Lou Jouhnson - Unsatisfied - Envelope - Snapped clean in half Don Gardner - Baby Likes To Boogaloo - Jiffy bag plus bubble wrap - Snapped in half Sam Fletcher - I'd Think It Over - Envelope and clear plastic sleeve - Perfect I still don't understand the thought processes of someone who puts an obviously fragile item in an envelope and sends it across two continents and an Ocean (sea?) via two less than gentle postal handling services and expects it to arrive unscathed. I'm getting angry again so I'm off to calm down.

Afraid this is a regular record dealer with over 600 feedback. I'm sure I'll get a refund but that's just money isn't it? I doubt I'll get the record again for the price I paid him. Won't name and shame yet as I've yet to hear back from him. I was just sounding off because damage to records is easily avoided and not costly to achieve, but is the needless damage that annoys me rather than whether I'll get a refund. The record actually plays once I'd eased the cracked part back together again and doesn't click much. But I'd bought it to sell on so its not much good at all now. Hey ho

Why can't some (mainly US based - there I've said it) record dealers pack records properly? This arrived this morning in a thin LP mailer with no cardboard stiffeners, the 45 was sellotaped to the centre of the inside of the mailer. It wasn't marked Fragile or anything. Notice the 1 inch crack top left, not hairline but clean through. I know it has happened to most people, I've had them turn up in f***ing envelopes before, but it always makes me feel sick to the stomach when I see damage like this which could have been avoided. Another tune made that bit rarer. Cheers Paul

Exactly what I was about to say, most of the tracks (especially Faith) had great vocals but the synthed drum beat just does my head in. I think someone played a set of this at a do in Bournemouth I was DJing at and I had to go and sit outside after about four tunes. I once rented an office in Borough (SE1 London not Middles) which turned out to have a studio in the basement where the guys there were trying to put together the next big thing. Very strange set up, they looked like builders/villains but most days they had various spottys turning up who were obviously DJ's on whatever scene they were attempting to crack. They put together all the tracks using computers and synths then played snippets to the spottys who just looked bored. I showed some interest and wanted to know what scene they were involved in (all drum to me) but as most days I had my pin-strpe whistle on they just ignored me. They expanded from the sound proofed cellar into a couple of other rooms and within three months the occupants of all the other offices (including me) left because of the noise. Synthed drumbeats all day. And they kept "borrowing" my swish leather meeting table chairs. My theory of them being builders/villains gained some credibility when they got broken into and had a load of kit nicked from their rooms, they knew the perpetrators would come back for the rest so they laid in wait for them overnight with iron bars. Quite messy by the front door the next day. I was always on time with my rent. Anyway, I'm rammbling now and have moved from topic to anecdote so I'll just finish this here.

Something More Recent: Babara Dane - I'll Be On My Way  Catchy tune for people that can't dance, no soul at all

Great record, used to play this down at These Old Shoes 3 or 4 years ago. I think it fetches anything between 40 and 75 though, so does it count?

Just sold mine on Ebay for 82 quid

Hurrah for "Whole Lot Of Shaking" !! I DJ'd with Jo Wallace at last years YKSoul all dayer in York, now I've been out of the way for a couple of years so when halfway through the set I looked at her next record I was shocked to see "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Are You Joking? (says I) Watch the floor (says Jo) Needless to say the floor filled in seconds as it started. I had no idea this was or would get played, Imagine my surprise ..... as they say I've got one finishing on ebay today anyway Cheers Paul
