The Northern scene in London at the time was plagued by media luvvies, none of them had a clue really so I suppose it wasn't hard for Ian to get them down to The Rocket and no surprise that they talked bollocks. The observer did a piece on The 100 club, Loaded did a 2 page article, the BBC even phoned me up about going down to These Old Shoes to film it. They said they were doing a piece on "Northern Soul in Strange Places" I said that this sounded a bit of a ridiculous concept to base a program on to which the researcher said "So is it just a load of old blokes dancing around to odd ball sounds then" I said "you're the researcher, you tell me". They still wanted to come down but I told them to f*** off, we weren't interested. I remember the 100 was full of idiots for about the next 3 months (yes, more so than normal ) after the Observer article, Shaun was photographed for that too.

  7. I started a thread the other week entitled "Are records getting cheaper" and used 3 that I'd recently bought off eBay as examples. Also my ebay sales bear out pete's comment that things are easier to buy but harder to sell, bootlegs (sorry 2nd issues) seem to make more money than good records. As an amateur buyer and seller of records using predominantly eBay I find John's guide and web site invaluable. My knowledge is limited so when I see something that looks interesting that I don't know, I'll have a look at the guide and use the following loose set of rules: Anything in the guide at 20 or under I ignore. Anything between 20 and 80 I go looking for a sound file to see whether I think it is any good (this is after buying a tune blind that was guide priced at 75 and turned out to be absolute pants and could only be sold for a fiver) Anything in the guide over 80 is going to be a good saleable record. As I said this is just for stuff I don't know (which is a lot) I buy things to try and sell on for profit so that I can afford to buy the records I want for myself, it doesn't always work. I've only been collecting for about 8 years so my knowledge is limited and my tastes change the more I hear but I would say that price guides ARE an invaluable tool for buyers and sellers alike, but they are just a guide. I just wish John wouldn't sell them abroad. John's web site is also an invaluable tool, for reference and for sounds, but there are loads of web sites with sounds available so better to say the internet is the tool. I'm not sure how keen I am about a subscription based service though but the data John has is extremely valuable and so should be charged for, just not sure whether I would pay except in extreme circumstances e.g. purchasing a very valuable record. BTW I do ocassionally buy records from John's site so I feel its OK for me to use it for my own research
  8. I would be a bit sceptical about Record Collector's price guides. I used to frequent a shop in London fairly regularly and look through the Soul stuff, occasionally buying something. One day the chap said to me "Record Collector have asked me to do a piece on Motown with a price guide, would you give me a bit of a steer on prices?" I admitted to knowing nothing apart from a rough idea of UK Motown LP prices as I have quite a few. I don't know what his guide was like as I don't get record collector but I did buy a copy of Martha Reeves - No One There off him, I keep it in the cardboard sleeve that came with it which bears the legend " Nice Motown - £5"
  9. I think the impossibility of this task is illustrated by Tim Ashibende's sales boxes which I saw at Cleethorpes about 4 years ago. If anyone hasn't seen them he has 3 or 4 small boxes titled "Rare" "Really Rare" "The really really rare stuff" and something like "don't bother looking in here". I had a look through the "really really rare stuff" and truly didn't recognise a single record. The cheapest was about 300. It illustrated to me my complete ignorance and also the depth of knowledge there must be about and vast numbers of records there are to find. I wanted to sit down for a day with each box and play each record just to know what they were like. He wouldn't let me borrow them though .

  13. And quite rightly too (taking them as compliments). That is how I describe Northern Soul to people who don't know anything about it. It is an elitist soul snob thing cos we want the obscure and hard to find not the hits, the run of the mill etc I want the original format that the artist recorded on, I want to look at the label and read the credits and feel that I've got a link to the past. I like to think that the artist may have held this vinyl in his hand and possibly touted it round radio stations in an attempt to get it plays. I love the little red crosses that DJ's at 60's radio stations put on demos to remind them which side to play and how good the track is, I like them better when they are on the "wrong" side . I want to feel the hairs on the back of my neck rise when I put a newly arrived rare original on my decks and hear it play for the first time on my bit of vinyl. I want to hear the music fill my head. I want to play my records out in the hope that other people feel the same way and appreciate what I've collected and the way I've put my set together. I want to go and hear others play their records out and hear what they are collecting and what they think is good. I want to dance in my own clumsy way to the sounds that other people put together to make a set at that time on that night. I want to hear new sounds. I want to hear classics. I want to nod appreciatively and get up and dance to a record that is fantastic but probably unattainable to me due to either rarity or cost: "well done mate for finding and getting that and playing it out so I can share it" Soul snobbery and elitism .... YES PLEASE! BRING IT ON!

  15. Actually I've measured again and at the last 1 of the matrix it is less than 7.5 but at the start of the run in it is about 9. Help!

Hi John, Your bootleg guide is a little different to the above in that it says "run out grooves are small and tight 1 or 2 turns to the end" and "look out for the small neat run-out .. to get the original" for an original, whereas you say THREE turns for an original above. I've just checked mine and it looks like the deadwax is about 7.5 mm but it has 2 turns max. Confused and worried now

  19. Hi Pete, I think PayPal is really your only option if the seller is taking that attitude. You can claim for "item significantly not as described" but you would have to get independant verification from a reputable record dealer and they don't give you much time to do it. I'm always tempted by these lots as you never know what you might get but the cynic in me suggests that it is just US dealers clearing out crap. Also my wife would give me severe grief if large consignments of recors started turning up . Best of luck.
  20. Now this is where the argument gets turned on its head . What this means is that its an ownership thing not a "hearing original vinyl" thing. I found out after a couple of years of collecting (not long ago then ) that DJ's played boots or sometimes CD's of the really rare stuff because they either wanted to protect the original or the original's quality wasn't up to being played . I was really surprised and it made me step back and contemplate whether this means that its OK to play boots and/or CD's or whatever media as long as you take a box of records with you to prove ownership of what you've just played. And then you realise that that is ridiculous! Anyone can own rare records, you just have to be prepared to spend loads and loads of hard earned. To put together an interesting set takes skill and thought and knowledge and thats the difference. Some money is involved obviously but its not the b-all and end-all. But at what point do you become a "big" enough DJ to enable you to play pressings of rare records without being slated for it?
  21. I use the mic when I have something to say or when I have mis-cued records or when the equipment isn't working as it should or to abuse people mid record: "Call that dancing? I have a three legged dog that moves better!" That sort of thing. I never use the mic when double decking with Jo Wallace cos I can never get hold of it On topic: There is no worse feeling when behind the decks than seeing too much floor.
  22. Yeah but that's not quite the same is it? I see plenty of records under 10 dollars on eBay that are worth buying to resell or keep and wouldn't mention them on here whilst the auction is live because a) I have a snipe bid on them, It would not be particularly interesting and c) when I attempt to resell them everyone will know what I paid and get all pear-shaped about me making a profit (perish the thought). This was a rare record that had already been bid up to over 400 dollars so it was hardly hidden. I had no idea who the bidders were and didn't really care anyway, I just thought it was interesting. If I'd posted up "Wow look at this great record that is really cheap" I could understand the complaints. The guys on the card forum can't have guessed that someone would have paid 250 dollars for the card can they? Or they would have bid on it, surely (no I'm not calling you Shirley) The guy that has bought it obviously didn't see it or he would have bid too, unless he has a shed load of money and lets other people find things for him. I really can't see anyone who uses eBay looking at an item they want and thinking: "Whoops hang on someone I know is bidding so I'll just leave that one" with the possible additional thought of "Shame cos it's only $4.26, never mind I'll offer the guy 250 for it when he wins" If that's what everyone thinks is the correct etiquette then I'll do 2 things: 1) regularly post up a list of items I'm bidding on so that everyone can steer clear and 2) Ignore the etiquette and bid over other peoples bids. I had no idea this would be such an emotive subject, particularly as discussing live auctions is fairly common anyway.
  23. Right just shut the pub (quiet on a Monday) and saw this topic WHICH I LOVE! So here's my take on it (in no particular order): If people didn't search out original vinyl there wouldn't be anything to boot. If people play bootlegs at do's as long as that policy is clear so what? I just wouldn't go though cos I can do the same at home and the sets would be of no real interest as there would be no "Wow! what was that". I have bought bootlegs in the past, now I look at them and think "what is the point of owning this on vinyl? I have it on CD and that is far more convenient, I'm never going to knowingly DJ with a boot so why keep it?" I'm selling all my boots. Vinyl is an impractical media, it is heavy and there is normally only a maximum of two tunes on a quite large lump of a thing. If you just want to hear the tunes and couldn't give a toss about originals, labels etc then get an ipod, it is far more convenient. Why buy vinyl now if it isn't original? If you want to put on a do and don't care about originals then play off CD's far more convenient and far more choice, why lug a 200 box of bootlegs about? I like to hear the rare tunes on original vinyl, I don't know why though. If I wasn't tied to the pub I would be out and about trying to hear new stuff and also hear people play the classics on original vinyl. Dave Rimmer played The Magnetics at These Old Shoes and it sent a tingle down my spine! I could of played it on CD when I got home but it wouldn't have been the same would it? In London I used to love Alan Hanscomb's sets as he always played something different and new. My missus has a nice set of bootlegs from the 70's that she bought at the time ( a couple of nice originals too ), to me she should never sell them as they are special to her, they are part of her personal history. But I wouldn't DJ with them (hopefully she won't either!). That all said, you can have pretty much any record you want these days if you have enough money. If you want a certain record you can just post on here and say " anyone got a copy of XXXX, I'll give you X hundred/grand" bet you get offered three. You can go on eBay every week and buy fantastic records if you are quite happy to shell out more dosh than anyone else, but is that really cricket? I reckon that it would take about 3 months with unlimited money to put a fantastic playbox together but where is the heart in that? So, its originals only for me but when I go out I want to hear someone's personal choice of records not a current national top 20 Northern records in a set. Jason from Bournemouth once said to me that when they booked a DJ they wanted him/her to take them for a walk through their record box in an hour not just play 20 biggies and I think that sums it up really.
