Perhaps someone could mess with her head a bit by dropping her an email along the lines of: " .. I came across your web site and record wreath whilst searching for old soul records, I couldn't help noticing that the record second from top right on your wreath is actually quite valuable, in fact I recently sold a vg copy for 750 dollars .... " etc Might make her think twice about making another

I noticed this seller had quite a few records recently in a similar state and graded EX and asked what he meant by Ex on this one: https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ADME:L:RTQ:UK:1 He appears to have revised the grading to VG+ and added a grading guide since my question. Still looks F***k*d though

Good topic! Got a few opinions on this myself As a seller I buy records to sell to fund the purchase of other records, I also sometimes sell stuff from my collection that I don't want any more but again it is to fund other purchases. Pricing records is pretty hard really as I find there is only an accepted "going rate" for records that are around the 50-100 quid level. Particularly these days when people will blow 20 on a boot quite happily, and also 500 quid on a record seems to be getting quite common.. Records from my collection I always price at a level that I will sell it at rather than selling just for some money - if they don't sell at the price I have put on them then I'll just have to keep them Records I have bought to sell on; I price for profit and try to be under what they would generally be priced at, if I can't do that then I don't buy them in the first place. When I put a list on here I normally sell about 50-60% of the records listed. Anything that doesn't sell goes back in my sales box to be sold later. I only put stuff on eBay now if it is in demand or I need to raise cash quickly. I quite often buy things off eBay and put them back on and get more for them, particularly classic oldies for some reason (recently got £35+ for a 2nd issue of Dust My Broom). I too think that comments on pricing should be OK cos quite often I cannot believe what people ask for records but at the end of the day if you don't like the price then don't pay it. I always hate seeing records listed for offers as I never know what to offer, I am normally too tight to make a decent offer whereas if they were priced I would probably pay a price I wouldn't offer to get a record I wanted (if that makes sense ). Mind you, worse than seeing records for offers is making an offer then not even getting a reply, these people go straight on my never-buy-from list. Cheers Paul

Thanks for that, I thought my memory was tricking me again. I'm fairly certain you could buy generic Wigan Casino & Northern Soul patches in any newsagents in the mid to late seventies. They were common as muck and were thought of as a bit of a joke by some. Suppose the actual commemorative patches are different, earned as Simon said. There was a young chap (17 or 18) at the York all dayer the other year who spent most of the day dancing in front of the stage, dressed in baggies and a vest. Agree with who ever said that if the young ever grabbed hold of Northern as a retro scene it would be good to see. Doubt they would buy the original records tho. Now ... 50+ year olds in baggies and vests ?

Think these were known as Disc-Go's (geddit?), quite often see them on eBay (US site) normally being auctioned with their contents (Booby Darin etc). I've got a few record containers but they are in storage at the moment as I'm still between permanent abodes. Would like one of those tho .........

Just got a copy of The Puzzles - My Sweet Baby - Fatback, 7 quid off eBay However the vinyl is mintish but the labels are shot to sh*t. Could some kind soul please put up scans of both sides for me so that I can cut them out and stick them on so I know which side is which? I know this is sacrilege but the labels are almost completely gone and it is just for personal use Ta Paul (This is the side with the good label)

Is it just me, or has there been quite a lot of these for sale recently considering it is a relatively rare record?

I remember this is one of the things I played from John's box when he stayed round my gaff after guesting at TOS, the arrangement was bacon sarnies for a rummage through his records. Straight on my wants list and took me about three years to get one for a modest 26 dollars off eBay. The cream one:

31, The Drapers, Your Love Has Gone Away, GEE - Promo, 50, Great tune and looks cheap

The original question involved the mainstream media and as most people have said, they tend to represent things in a way that suits them. Unless it is done by someone who has some repect and knowledge for the music and the scene generally, the mainstream media will always portray the scene badly. Whilst we were running These Old Shoes in London, the BBC contacted me (my mobile no was on the flyers) and said they were interested in filming the club. Initially I thought "Thats great!" but then I decided to be cautious. I asked them why and they told me they were doing a short film on "Northern Soul in Strange Places" - evidently next to Tower Bridge counted as strange. I thought that it would be a silly piece that might get shown repeatedly and we could end up as laughing stocks so I said that I was reluctant to have the club filmed. The BBC rep then said "So is it just a load of old blokes dancing on their own to crap music then?" This took me aback a bit so I said "Yes, why would you want to film that?" and she put the phone down. Odd really, but it maybe illustrates the mainstream media's attitude. I'm still a no. That's a mainstream media no not an elitist no or a don't want anything to change no. Cheers Paul
