I stand corrected, but I was only going on hearsay I'm still surprised that it is that rare as loads of people seem to have one, even me I got mine from Saturn Records off eBay about 5 or 6 years ago, can't remember what I paid for it though, maybe 250 dollars?

I remember Shifty telling me that this was a local hit in the San Francisco area and so there should be loads of copies about, he was talking in the thousands. Wonder where they all got to?

I would love this but I still can't get my head round spending 1500 quid on a record I'm not taking the micky here I just couldn't bring myself to do it, dunno why. Actually I'm beginning to think it is all a bit mad. Maybe I should sell up.

I think this reply is closest to the mark, or at least closest to what I think so it must be right If you have plenty of dosh you can have any record you want providing it comes up for sale/auction; what's 5 grand if you have a million? But I don't think there are too many people in that situation I think peer pressure has forced people to go out on a limb to raise funds for records. The last few years record prices have gone very silly although the cheaper things seem to have stayed around the same. My theory is that a number of people have seen the price of their house rise in a similarly silly way over the same period of time and have been seduced into "releasing equity" as the loan companies sweetly call it. If you release 50 grand from your house to spend on records you are not going to drop it on copies of The Snake, you are going to go after the accepted big money records. If only a handful of people do this or cane their credit cards or whatever this pushes up the price of records. Once you have spent your "released equity" it soon becomes clear that you have to carry on paying so you can't buy any more records and if interest rates rise then you have to increase your payments. This removes a number of big money record buyers from the market so prices will fall. Its just a theory but I have heard all sorts of silly stories about people taking out loans for buying records. Personally I think people must be mad to fund a hobby in this way. I've also been told that "You'll never lose money buying records" which again is obviously daft! I buy a record cos I like it or because I believe I can sell it at a profit immediately to help fund a purchase. I buy my records by buying and selling and also trading. I don't touch any hard earned any more, which is probably why I never bid enough to buy a copy of The Parisians Its all good fun though and hopefully higher interest rates will squeeze those who have lashed out on records for investment so they all have to unload flooding the market with great records at bargain prices Cheers Paul

So you're to blame for rising prices The thing is, these days you can ask for records to a wide audience quite quickly, I reckon that if someone wanted a copy of the Continental Showstoppers and asked for one on here for 200 or so they would get one quite easily, so why pay 275 for one? In fact hasn't Marc Forrest done just that in the wants section? Same for the last thing I commented on: Wade Flemons - Jeanette; that went for 428 (I think) but I reckon you get a mint one by posting up on here for not more than 350, probably less as it isn't that rare; just in-demand. In fact you might get mine for that Unless its a money no object thing. If people are happy with what they have paid then fine by me but I am still surprised at some of the prices and don't see what's wrong with commenting. I would say the example you use is a bit of a different thing, copies of the Magnetics are not that common, as you point out. My amazement comes from the number of times I see fairly common records go for about twice what I would consider paying for them, mind you I am a Yorkshireman! Well I want loads of records but I haven't got to the point of paying any silly sum for them just to have them. As this is a forum for posting opinions can't see why mine puts me in the "holier than thou brigade" whatever that is. I know I say this every time these ending prices come out but 257 for this is barking! I bought one after asking in the wants here cos I'd missed one on eBay and I thought I'd probably paid a touch over for it but wasn't bothered. The eBay one was 261 (dollars), I had bid 260; the one I bought off here was 150 (pounds sterling) and I got offered 3. Who on earth paid 257 for this and why? I think we should be told. Still, if I ever sell up it will be via JM's auction for the few good bits I have. Barking

Thank you for this, I was just composing a similar reply then decided to read all the thread. I left York in 1976 but this is exactly my recollection, the simple fact is that the proportion of Black people in York was tiny and that was probably true in most places of a similar size, so the proportion of black people on the scene represents that, there's nothing rascist or exclusive about it. Incidentally Trevski, I reckon I can name all three families so can probably test you on this

Not problems exactly with the same seller but slightly longer than normal for delivery; i.e. item finished Jun 14th, paid by paypal Jun 15th, received email on Jun 29th that item shipped and obviously not got it yet. Probably will be 3 weeks from flash to bang but not as bad as your experience, just another example of a purchase from the same seller if that helps at all. Cheers Paul

I must admit that as the first Guest DJ of the smoking ban at York Soul Club on 7th July, this is something of an unknown. Hopefully it won't have an effect but its a bit of a worry that half the people will be sitting outside smoking whilst listening to the music inside. Have to wait and see I think. Cheers Paul
