So how do you select them then? First 300 in the store to customer A, next 300 to customer B etc? I'm on planet earth BTW, if your on a different planet then I'm not coming to pick them up.

I did a search round the site and couldn't find this so I thought I'd post it up here. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbys...ics-future.html From Monday's Telegraph (found one on the bus )

I think mainly because it was too niche and, at the time, ebay was better and reached a bigger market. The attraction of auctioning a record is getting the best price which at one time was not too difficult on ebay. Ebay became a global market for everything and a lot of niche collectors markets rode on the back of that. Whereas soulbid would never have got enough traffic and revenue to make it global which unfortunately reduced its impact. I think that for something to compete with ebay now, it needs to be sophisticated enough for a lot of people to take it up in a short time. That would take a lot of cash initially and there isn't much about a the mo. Cheers Paul

I only sell small-time to fund my record buying but stopped selling on ebay due to the hike in fees for occasional sellers (I did the math on another thread). These high fees have also caused the disappearance from ebay US of what use to be a regular thing - people listing a few records they found in their attic for a few dollars. The fees (including paypal) are just prohibitive so these end up being sold locally to US dealers (see 2. below). A few other things have affected ebay IMHO: 1. The cheaper end of the NS record market has pretty much died - £10, £20 & £30 classics do not sell any more (well not for more than a fiver anyway). I used to be able to buy stuff at this level off ebay US and sell on ebay UK at a profit, not anymore due to the fees and low selling prices. 2. US sellers are not generally listing records at low start prices anymore, common stuff starts at $29.99 or $49.99 and anything that has been remotely in-demand over the last 5 years is commonly listed at twice book price (thus attracting no bids). 3. On the subject of book price - price guides have seen US dealers with ebay shops listing things at price guide prices cos they don't know any better. A falling dollar now makes these records far too expensive for the UK market. 4. Ebay UK is awash with bootlegs - some recently made, some from the 70's, some listed "honestly" as re-issues, others not (either through ignorance or dishonesty). Wading through this rubbish trying to find a decent record and/or a bargain is just not worth it anymore. I don't want to moan too much cos I've had a lot of good records (bargains and otherwise) off ebay but they have changed their own market from a place where individuals could sell relatively cheaply to a market place biased towards dealers who will use the ebay shop facility. I think that this has taken the online car boot sale element out of it, which was actually the key to its success. ... or maybe they are running out of records in the US?

I missed one on ebay in 2005 that went for $56, I eventually got a mint one in Jan 2007 for $86 plus postage. (edit: about £45 then) If I could get any for £15 quid I'd buy them all!

Unfortunately the odd CD and track list have got mixed up before I started writing names on them Can someone please tell me who put the CD together that starts with "Sonny & Dianne - Love Trap" and finishes with "Alton Jackson & Larry Bailey - Believe In Me"? Thanks Paul

People bootlegging issued CD's on any scale is just not on IMHO because it deters the legal issuers from producing any more. I used to sell CDs off the These Old Shoes web site, I got them directly from Goldmine, Kent and a few distributers at trade prices and sold them for not much profit. I stopped because sales dropped due to people bootlegging them and selling them round the scene and on ebay.

I've been talking of selling up for about the last 6 months to a year. Not to realise an investment but just because I'm not sure why I'm still buying vinyl. I quite often look at my reord collection and think "Why have I got these? I should just record them onto CD and sell them off". Then I buy more records. I rarely DJ these days so don't have that as an excuse. I enjoy my modest collection but when I think of the money I've spent (and am still spending) on them I have difficulty justifying it. I sometimes think that the reality part of my brain switches off when it comes to buying records. I think of the value of them and feel that it could be put to some better use, but nothing springs to mind that I would enjoy more at the moment. I'm sure a psychologist/psychiatrist would have a field day!

I think this is one of those statements that some would say is "playing devils advocate" whilst others would suspect is being made using a large, excrement stained paddle. It looks a one liner that invites a response which will get another one liner response and this will inevitably descend into an argument, which isn't what I, or presumably the thread starter, want. Anyway, the reason I said ebay is cheaper is because that is my experience. I'm sure for some it can be more expensive than UK record dealers, maybe they don't care what they spend on records and like the thrill of "winning" an auction - who knows? My experience of buying records off ebay is that it is cheaper than buying in the UK. Staying on topic; I don't bid on records at all I always use a snipe bid which I set at a level I'm prepared to pay depending what I intend to do with the record. If I want to sell it on I bid about 30% less than I think I can sell it for; if it is for my collection I bid what I want to pay - given I'm a Yorkshireman this is always less than I think I could buy it for in the UK. I win about 30% of records I want to sell on and 75% of records I want for myself. Like someone else said, I think that bids attract bids so I never bid on ebay. I don't know why, maybe I feel I should back up my argument and I know I'm sticking my neck out to be shot down, but I'm going to give you two examples of records bought recently for my own collection off ebay. If you can get them from UK record dealers at less then I'll buy them off you and sell them on my web site. Chubby & The Turnpikes - I Didn't Try - Capitol demo - Ex £120 Been after this for ages but it always seems to go for about £200 and I'm too tight! JM's guide says £300 for the demo. Troy Dodds - Try My Love - El Camino demo - M- £400 Not turned up yet so not definite on condition but I'll be surprised if it isn't M-, saw an issue go through eBay UK for £500 "Buy it now" recently but generally not seen it for less than £600. edit: this should have cost me £375 but the bloody exchange rate got me! JM's guide says £750 I can understand that if you know loads of UK record dealers that sell records cheaply you wouldn't want to divulge your sources, (I certainly wouldn't - I'd be buying their stock) but perhaps you could back up your comment in a similar way? Cheers Paul

Used to see him fairly regularly when I was in London, nice chap, he and Paul Dunn DJ'd for us at These Old Shoes a couple of times and were really good. Not seen him since I left London though.

Right then a few comments: Best track (IMHO): Willie Tee - Take Your Time Hadn't heard it before and it is just superb. Also got the Jo wallace seal of approval Records bought after hearing them on the CDs: The Gambrells - I'm In Love Again For The First Time - Cub Sounds like an expensive record but isn't! One of those "if this was rare .... " tracks Sunny Carrington - The Girl Every Guy Should Know - Deep Never heard of this before but it leapt into my ears shouting "Buy Me! Buy Me!" Thought it was going to be expensive but got one for $22.99 including postage. Robert Thomas - Salvation - Charay On a couple of CDs and really good (and missed the Cresa Watson version on ebay the other day too - drat! But it did go for what looked like a silly amount for a VG record) James Kelly Duhon - In School - Jude Again, on a couple of CDs and really stood out The True Tones - He's Got The Nerve - Josie Sounds like a proper oldie (whatever that is) - a doubtful bit of guitar in the middle but a great dancer Carolyn Cooke - I Don't Mind - RCA After hearing this and going looking for it, I saw that it is getting plays around the place too. Just pipped by Willie Tee as best track I hadn't heard before. Wants list: Keeping this to myself until I find them

No, I didn't mean marking them. As you say, there are loads of different types of track on the CDs, I was just going to do a personal 2 or 3 favorites and make it a positive post as I've enjoyed listening to everything I've received even if some things weren't to my taste. Maybe it would turn in to a ranking exercise though and that wouldn't be good. I'll post something up later today when I've had a look through them again and maybe listened to a few again .... another day gone
