  1. So is this one on ebay another or the same one again? Ambitious price!
  2. There's a cheap one of these on ebay at the mo [here] Too much twangy guitar for me tho.
  3. Perhaps I should start a new thread with this but it seems to fit in quite well here. One thing that has always interested me is how record prices are set. I've only been collecting for just over 10 years (even tho I am 50+) and when I started I asked Pete S to put together a sales tape of cheap records with a list pricing them. I bought 5 or 6 for about a fiver each and thought I was mad to pay that much for records. I've still got them all I think. But over the years, it has always intrigued me how records are priced, because there simply isn't any sound basis to it, particularly when you get past the £10 - £20 level (which are priced on how much it cost to get them from the states). You may say it is supply and demand - but both go up and down all them time. And at a certain level how do you distinguish between setting a price of say £800 or £1000? (Both are barking by the way ). Who actually decides that a record is worth £100 or £150? There is no real basis for this distinction as it is difficult to tell what the supply or demand of a particular record at this level is. Some people would say they are common, others rare. Does it come down to "what the market will bear"? If so then it is OK for people to put whatever price they want on records. The price guides are no real indication as they are out of date before they are printed and were only produced to stop the flow of cheap records from the states. Perhaps we could set criteria for different price brackets and then (as someone suggested) just slot records into these brackets and ask for offers. But then who determines that a record price should go up or down a bracket? It has been said that the buyer determines the price but that is only the case when a seller is desperate to sell and there is probably only one buyer or when there are a number of buyers who desperately want the record. Once a record has been bought, that is one less potential buyer and record so should the price go up or down? I was going to continue with this but I'm getting close to my old hobby horse of "the difference between value and price". Interested to hear views on who decides what a record price should be. Cheers Paul
  4. Neck sticking out here but ..... ... the best way to grade records for sale (IMHO) is to grade them so you would be happy with the grade if you received them. Price is up to you .....
  5. I think I got 40 quid for an Otis Smith re-issue - which was nice. Listed it as a re-issue too

  7. These are all listed on my web site Pauls Records (most at higher prices than here) so soundfiles are there too. All conservatively graded. Paypal (no extra charge) or personal cheque are fine. Bobbie Smith - Walk On Into My Heart - American Arts 2 WLP (black writing) - EX 50 Definite original of a classic. B side has some sort of mark on it that can be heard so that side is only VG. Small WOL Books at 100. The Volumes - That Same Old Feeling/The Trouble I've Seen - Impact 1017 Issue VG 70 Label wear and damage, many light marks and a few worse. Storage warp. Plays really well for grade. Books at 250 The Artistics - This Heart Of Mine - Okeh 7232 - Ex 50 Classic Brothers Of Soul - Come On Back - Boo 1005 - Ex 50 Jimmy Soul Clark - Sweet Darling - Soul Hawk 001 - Ex+ 50 Madeleine Wilson - Dial L For Lonely - Samar 115 - VG++ Sold Benny Troy - I Wanna Give You Tomorrow - De-Lite 1572 Promo - Ex+ 70 The Opals - I'm So Afraid - Okeh 7224 M- 60 Dealers: all of them (that are left) for only 370 Postage (UK) Recorded 2.20 Special Delivery 5.50 - I'd rather use this in the UK as recorded only insures up to £39 (so your risk) Thanks Paul

There's a Lockettes on ebay [here]
  9. Well perhaps Elgin should have left them there? Then they wouldn't be in existence today for people to squabble over where they are kept. Sorry, that was ridiculously off topic. I'm ashamed of myself already.
  10. That's a far too sensible comment for this thread. In fact it's probably one of the most sensible things I've read on the site. Nice one.
  11. Buy CDs You get more tunes for your money You can play them in the car They weigh less Its easier to get the tunes on to your ipod If they break or refuse to play you have some chance of getting another Records will be worthless in 10 years time
  12. There's one on ebay [here] - but it is a bit of a price
  13. Porgy and The Monarchs - That Girl on ebay [here]
  14. There's an expensive DJ promo copy on ebay [here] ....... ...... or a much cheaper DJ promo copy on ebay [here]
  15. I think you must have had yours over your head when you typed that as it makes no sense whatsoever. (congratulations on the length and/or agility required BTW ) Listened to it again and it has quite a good intro and a nice break but IMO the vocal is awful (deffo sounds like Hanson) and the repetitive guitar bit spoils it too. It probably does sound good played out loud over a decent system at 4 in the morning particularly if you are off your face. Then again some people think the velvet satins is a great danceable tune $3500 on that is barking. I'd better start trawling through the garage section on ebay for similar "gems" as yet unknown if this is considered good. Personally I think it is just novelty as there are not many about , hence my knob waving comment. As you say (sort of); each to their own.
  16. I've still got the sound file somewhere, I'll try and find it and bung it up on refosoul (though it may be a realaudio file). posted after Mike had put up a link to it<> I'll have a listen first tho, cos I'm sure I just talked rubbish. RS took the mick out of my Oliver Bush demo telling me the sound was much better on the issue. Other than that he was a very nice chap. I still complain to Jo about her playing Big Don's Rebellion, I was still looking for a copy and after she played it on Jazz FM it trebled in price. Anyway, gone off topic again
  17. I think I agree with this. If I was making CD's I'd use any method I could to get the message out there. I haven't read the article but from what James said it is pretty standard stuff from Ian, he knows the circulation and he's tying to push his CD's. Whether this is to bring the world a whole new era of fantastic music or just to make a few quid is immateriel really. This is how he promotes his stuff and good luck to him. I have been witness to Mr Levine's intense promotion techniques myself. When Jo, Martin & Myself were on RS's Jazz FM show, IL had purchased the first slot in every ad break to promote The Rocket Allniter. As we went into each ad break we started trying to mimic the whole thing. By the end of the show we were just about word perfect. I can't remember it now but it definitely started "I'm so excited !...." As for whether Manifesto's standards are slipping - has it ever been any good? I haven't seen a copy for about 5 years but if I remember it consisted of some not to be trusted record reviews, a couple of short & confused editorials from scene "names", some biased reviews of events written by interested parties, normally one really good article on an artist or label, a load of adverts for rubbish and records that had been sold and the centre spread of photos of people gurning and/or off their tits. I've got some old ones somewhere so I'll root about for them and see how accurate I am. Cheers Paul
  18. That's an extremely good point. And this web site is a great place to trial the online version, not as a free for all forum but as a magazine section with selected and edited content. Mike?

  20. Today's conspiracy theory: James Trouble is really part of Ian Levine's publicity machine
  21. Knob waving alert! It sounds like that group of long blond haired kids who were brothers ... bloody alzheimers! HANSON! thats them. Might sound better pitched down? Just a thought.
  22. I could only find one on ebay [here] and it isn't in too good a condition. He wants $49 for it on "buy it now" - given the demand that might be a good price. Mind you Tommy's only went for about $36.
  23. There's about 10 copies of "Fred Hughes - I Can't Take It Away" on ebay [here]
