The difference is that in the 70's vinyl was the media in use, so producing things on vinyl was pretty much the only option. Cassettes rapidly followed and people sold cassettes with tunes on right up to the late 90's, nobody accused them of bootlegging but that's what they were doing, but you can't DJ from a cassette. in 2015 I personally can't see the point of vinyl bootlegs as the medium is incredibly outdated and it requires effort to play 45's - you have to keep changing them, you can't do anything else at the same time. I listen to music on mixcloud these days unless I take an hour or so to sit down and play my records. I take pleasure from the fact that they are the original release and wonder who had/played them before me. It's a personal thing. Today these things are produced as a business with the market being mainly people who don't care what they are buying, same as any other fake. It's a reflection on the state of the nation just how big the market is for fakes of everything. That was my point. each to their own though, I couldn't care less what other people do. They can sit round drinking fake drinks, wearing fake clothing and playing fake records if that's what they want to do.

Have a look at the sellers other items then click on "completed items" and you can see how many he's selling. i'd guess at a profit of £3 to £6 per record - do the math! People buy this shit, he same as they buy fake Ugg boots etc

Monarch didn't "give it all away" as they weren't trying to fool anyone, they were legitimately pressing re-issues on behalf of record labels. That's why they used the numbers that they did. The argument is that it isn't possible to fake an original that would fool everyone, so to say the only fakes we know about are those that are wrong just backs up that argument. If there's a way of getting the vinyl, the label, the font, the ink etc etc correct it would be known about.

Idiots with too much money stop buying records (unless they are my sales)

As Chalky said earlier, it simply wouldn't make economical sense to try and counterfeit really rare records; as soon as one turns up everyone will scrutinise it, make a load and you lower the price anyway, the cost to do it wouldn't justify the return. I think if anything is worth counterfeiting it is records in the £50 - £100 bracket as they are generally readily available so some well made counterfeits may slip by unnoticed. Pretty sure somebody would notice sooner or later though, there's so much knowledge (and suspicion!) around these days. And as somebody else said; rather than try and counterfeit rare records just put rare tunes on vinyl and sell them for a tenner a time on ebay - having looked on ebay uk that seems to be far more profitable; they sell all the time.

Normal people ?!? Who wants to play records to normal people?

Buy records with a bit of crackle and pop and a couple of big red X's on the label, then you know you have an original. I always worry when I receive a record and it's in fantastic condition.

John Manship Auction Results 23 - 12 - 2014

Always fancied a copy of the holidays but I think its price just outstripped its quality. -
I wouldn't do it myself but I can see why this would be incredibly attractive to a collector, it's possibly a complete one off. People who buy records to DJ with aren't collectors, collectors are a completely different beast. I don't want a complete run of a particular label but I understand that there are people who do. If they have the disposable income then good luck to them really.

Non Rarity? (Dobie Grays Out On The Floor )

I had a red vinyl twelve inch with this on, might have been on inferno? It had Muriel Day on it as well which was a bonus and another track I think. Don't think I still have it. -
I can see where you're coming from but a couple of live performances were absolutely magical for me; The Velvelettes at Cleethorpes - you could see they were nervous when they came on stage, possibly because they still saw themselves as a "lesser" Motown act. But seeing their initial amazement at everyone start immediately singing along turn to confidence was fantastic. It was like the years fell away, not sure who was enjoying it more - us or them. Ray Pollard at Prestatyn - his voice was absolutely incredible, I sat on the tiered seats at the back and just listened; to hear him perform The Drifter flawlessly was just incredible. Something that was really special for everyone was his duet with Tony Middleton of "I have faith in you". Apparently they only learned it the day before and had rehearsed it just a couple of times, on the night they enjoyed it so much they sang it again. I don't know who suggested it to them but what a great idea. That isn't on a record anywhere, only the people there got to experience it. So, not all live acts are shite IMHO. it didn't ruin the night either, all the DJ's still got to play their copies of Just A Boy's Dream afterwards

I got a mint adventurers issue off ebay less than a month ago for just over 200 including postage, so the JM one was 50% as much again. -

Wayne Gibson Boot On Ebay - Its Getting Silly Now
paultp replied to Jim G's topic in Look At Your Box
Both those listings are quite clear about what they are selling, so the buyers are clear about what they are buying. Can't see the point of buying them myself but the sellers just seem to be meeting a demand, not trying to con people. Just IMHO -

I thought so too, my VG+ copy wasn't far off that. The Troy Dodds just reminded me of my $400 copy that got "lost" whilst on its way to me. Grrrrr! -
Promoters Booking Events At Other Promoters Venues. Is This Right?
paultp replied to Soulie8's topic in All About the SOUL
It's a sorry saga of a thread but I think it is actually a good thing that this sort of wrangling gets out into public view every so often as it shows to those that just attend venues they like and enjoy the music they like what actually goes on behind the scenes. Normally you only hear about the shittier side of Northern Soul by word of mouth and rumour. What a sorry business. Don't care who's right or wrong.- 241 comments

A few rarer things as I start selling my collection off: I've tried to grade these conservatively and honestly but money back if not happy, can do sound files and scans if necessary, might be able to find company sleeves for them as well. Prices in UK pounds, I might take an offer on stuff but please don't take the p*ss Yvonne Barker - You Didn't Say A Word - Cameo Parkway East Coast White Promo - VG++ looking for 450 or more SOLD Definite original, some light marks on the vinyl and light water staining to the label but generally clean. yvonnebaker.mp3 The Deletts - Look At Me/What's The Use - Blue Rock - M- 250 SOLD Really nice issue of this double sider, company sleeve The Natural Four - I Thought You Were Mine - ABC white demo M- 250 SOLD Really nice copy of this classic, if I'm nit picking the b side label has a tiny bit of bubble Jack Montgomery - Dearly Beloved/Do You Believe It - Scepter VG+ 150 SOLD Light marks on the vinyl and a clear sticker mark on the label, label a bit grubby but not terrible. Ann Heywood - Crook His Little FInger - Hondo (black label) VG++ 150 ON HOLD Vinyl has only a few light marks on it but the label looks like it has been damp at some time and has worn away in places. Claude "Baby" Huey - Drifting - M.I.O.B - VG++ 125 SOLD this is actually a demo, hadn't noticed. Some light marks on vinyl and slight ring wear on label drifting.mp3 Tiny Topsy - Just A Little Bit - Federal White Label Promo VG+ 125 SOLD Light marks on vinyl, b side label has a some sort of mark on it (nail polish?) and a small "706" written on it. Terry SInclair - What Have You Heard - D.P.G. VG+ 125 Some light marks on vinyl and slight ring wear on label Shirley Lawson - One More Chance/The Star - Back Beat - VG 100 ON HOLD There's a couple of nasty small scratches at the start of One More Chance that click but not for long (I guess it plays Ex), the OMC side label is slightly worn, the other side label is badly torn. Chyvonne Scott - I'm Moving On - Alto White Label Promo Ex 100 Almost M- but a few very light marks King Coleman - Down In The Basement/Crazy Feeling - Togo (maroon) VG++ 100 A lot of light marks on vinyl and some marks on label, doesn't seem to come up often now Chuck Wright - The Palm Of Your Hand - Ember White Label Promo VG+ 90 Light marks and writing on label (just a small number on Palm side but time, letters and a big arrow on the other side which was obviously the DJ's choice at the time) The Fantastic Puzzles - Come Back - Portuguese PYE picture sleeve - Ex 80 Nice european copy of this floor filler Please note if there is a stampede after anything I reserve the right to ask for offers/turn it into an auction but I do want to sell. I might buy one so I can sue them. what started off as a limited edition became an "unlimited edition to cash in on the unexpected demand" and has now evolved into a "we made too many because we are so greedy so now we're trying to get rid of the last few at cost" box set. i'm not bitter at all
-
Finally sorted There was a mint one one on ebay that the seller was reducing $25 at a time each time they listed it but someone bought it for 195 which I thought was too much. I picked a VG- copy for £30 including postage thinking it will do until a better one comes up, it turned up filthy but cleaned up to about VG++ .......... which was nice
