  1. Seems to be two people bidding against each other - $860 when I looked. They must be mad! Anyone want my Ex copy for $1000?
  2. Another annoyance with ebay US at the moment is the sheer amount of listings from Craig Moerer - all buy it now at double the going rate. If you looked at ebay from highest price down you used to get to the realistic stuff on page 2 or 3 but his listings sometimes take up a whole page (200!). I have to do auctions only to enjoy a good trawl. I can't believe he sells anything but the most indemand stuff at his silly prices.
  3. You're just doing that to annoy me aren't you
  4. There's a really rough looking issue on ebay [here] that finishes today. Thay may give you a current indication.
  5. I liked it, hadn't heard it before. Bought one off ebay yesterday for 25 squids
  6. I can't believe everyone is taking the p*ss! Outrageous. Victoria, there are some excellent youtube videos that show you Northern Soul dance moves; here is one of the best IMHO.
  7. Good Grief! I look like I've just poured my pint down my shirt! Still, won't be the first or last time
  8. I'm not sure but is this Detroit in the background to Marvin Gaye singing "What's going On" in 1973? If so you can see the decay then. https://www.youtube.c...h?v=Y9KC7uhMY9s
  9. I used to sell these for him off the These Old Shoes web site. Can't remember his name either, I think the emails are on my old laptop so might have a look and see if I can find out. Nice chap. The book is a nice light read like you say.
  10. Of the versions I've heard the Cressa Watson does it for me. One came up on ebay last year but I didn't bid enough
  11. I'm sorry, I'd like to contribute to this thread but I am confused about what are "oldies" and what are "newies" Evidently "oldies" were stuff played before wigan started or just after but then got played at Wigan in Mr M's (and what was his full name?). Whereas "newies" were records broken at wigan in the main room and may have been played later in Mr M's. But evidently that isn't the case, "newies" are really "mid-tempo shite that cost £1000+" or "records we don't know" (and who are "we"?) whilst "oldies" are "100 mph stompers that got played at wigan ... and some things that got played at Stafford .... and some other records that "we" know, but don't know where they were played" And where do records played at The Mecca fit in? Or have I strayed into a prohibited area there? Can someone please give a current definition of what "oldies" and "newies are please? Without giving any examples. I just can't keep up I'm afraid. And I like "Lady in Green" - I think it is pure Detroit Soul
  12. Folk Music was "underground" in 1993? Are you serious? Folk is probably one of the oldest music scenes there is. As for the NS Karaoke CD - an appropriate social comment on Northern Soul at the moment. I'm certain that a number of nights could include an hour of Karaoke without lowering the tone of their evening or reducing the enjoyment of their punters. Did it have Dee Da Do on it?
  13. My missus worked on a trade mark dispute between various versions of this band, quite a bitter dispute I believe.
  14. Thank you for the inspiration on a drab Sunday. Just done a yellow label podcast on my blog
  15. I don't think Northern Soul celebrates failure, its just rebellion against the nonsense of the music business. If you look at the number 1 records of the early 70's just look at the rubbish! There is the occassional good record in there and I must say I liked Slade at the time. The later 70's number ones are even worse! Much of this was manufactured pap from the music industry of the time that churned out shite for a dull majority, just like Simon Cowell does today. The biggest selling artist globally last year? Susan Boyle !! Rare soul music is nearly all music that slipped through the net of a cynical music business and so didn't get any exposure at the time of release. So Northern soul was a scene populated by people who rejected the shite pumped at them by a cynical music industry and embraced good music that had been ignored by an equally cynical music industry. I have a download copy of "Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name" that I will never listen to (it is truly awful) but I have it as I liked the idea of a movement to stop Simon Cowell claiming the Christmas No 1. Northern Soul isn't a celebration of failure it is just disgust at what the rest of society thinks passes for music.
  16. But what is wrong with that? If I was 20 (and I wish I was ) given the choice of getting music I liked for free or paying thousands for tunes on a retro format it would be a no-brainer. If you could have got free records in the 70's would you have turned them down insisting on ...... ...... what was the format before records? Oh yeah! The human voice. "No thank you, keep your new fangled record thingys - I prefer my artists to be in the room with me"
  17. Got to agree with you here. I too can't afford the £1000+ tunes and in a lot of cases don't think they are worth it. So it is rummaging about for good tunes at good prices that does it for me. I don't get out a lot these days but my idea of a good set is someone playing a mix of tunes that is their choice rather than that of the chin strokers or the baggies and vest brigade. Got to be good records obviously but a personal choice is better than hearing the same rare records in every set. I remember an early Prestatyn where almost every DJ played "Just a boys dream" - great record but if it is only played to show you've got it; that's just a dick wave . I haven't heard Butch play out recently but it does seem that as well as playing stuff that is rare and/or unknown he also seems to play stuff for the sake of the tune. Maybe I should get out more and go and have a listen to his sets. I think it was a few months ago that he created a small rise in demand for Robert Thomas - Salvation - Charay by dropping it into his set. Great choice, great record, low price. Prior to that it was Talkin Bout Ya Baby - Mighty Marvelows that immediately went on wants lists after he played it. Daft really, as anybody could play these records out because they are good and they don't cost a lot. Strange that people only start wanting them because "Butch played it". I think playing what you can afford is a really good thing as it should give more variety to a night. Maybe it is the way forward? A music policy of "Play What You Can Afford" - I suppose it would just end up being over run with those that want to demonstrate their wealth though.
  18. If a competent DJ played Northern Soul off CDs (or anything for that matter) to a wider audience, IMHO that would be a good thing. It might get more people interested and cross to a new generation. There are two reasons why asking this forum about CDs v OVO will allways get a negative reaction. 1. Most people have collections of original vinyl and if this is no longer revered the value of it might drop 2. The majority on here seem to want this to be a limited scene, a closed shop - you can only play if you have records that you can't get. So Gazza/Graham you have two options: 1. Sell your house if you have one (and possibly next door) and spend the money on something that you've managed without for years. 2. Do what you want without asking for anybody else's approval Cheers Paul (Still buying records)
  19. Hurrah! 3 pages of drivel followed by some sense. Well said that man.
  20. Recently posted a vid om my blog of an acapella version of mustang sally, it was a toss up between that and this one:
  21. How on earth has this thread lasted 8 pages? Good grief!
  22. To me, OK to DJ with means it plays OK and sounds great when played out, the odd pop and crackle doesn't really matter over a loud system. But if you are the sort of collector that wants perfect labels and no marks on the vinyl an "OK to DJ with" grade immediately rules out the purchase - no need to ask "how VG++ is it?" Looking at it another way; I wouldn't want to DJ with absolutely mint records as regular play on other peoples' decks would just knacker them anyway. Anyone else been faced with a 10p piece taped to the head shell? Had me umming and aahing with my Jock Mitchell I can tell you! Anyway, at least you know "OK to DJ with" records are originals.
