2 on eBay [here] - one is BIN
-
The main point I was trying to make was that buying off ebay is "buyer beware". I didn't mean to suggest all ebay sellers were dishonest, I meant that people shouldn't think all ebay sellers are honest. ebay feedback can't really be trusted anymore as they remove feedback from sellers where they think the seller has attempted a resolution. I bought a cheap record recently which turned up battered, the seller offered a refund that didn't include postage (and took the attitude that he couldn't care less what happened). I pointed out that there was no point returning it as it would cost me more than the record. I left neutral feedback explaining this and ebay removed it and wouldn't explain why. Also, sellers with high levels of feedback tend to absorb negs and they disappear after a year. I've come across sellers who will say anything to get the neg removed and then screw you afterwards and are pleased with themselves, only one or two though.

Anything bought off ebay is done in the spirit of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). Anyone who thinks that ebay sellers are honest (or should be) needs to wake up and smell the cocoa IMHO. A fool and his moola etc

I've had an Ex- one on my site for months now at £100, suppose I should put the price up or bung it on ebay if people are going to bid £150 with 5 days to go for a VG one. The bidding looks like somebody put a large bid in and then somebody else bid them up. Not saying anything dodgy is going on but perhaps the high bidder has over bid to make sure they get it and might end up paying top wack for it. Risky business putting large bids on early, unless you have deep pockets.

Descriptions like that are intended for the search engines. Waste of time really as Google takes about 7 days to pick it up and index it; by then the item has finished.

I helped run These Old Shoes from the beginning up until early 2003 when I moved back up north. We ran it on a Thursday night (I think it was third one of the month!) and I don't remember having a duff night to be honest. The cellar bar had a numbers limit of 60 (though we got 100+ in on the anniversaries) and it looked busy with 15 people in it which encouraged people to turn up each month. I would say 40 or so was about the average but that filled the bar and gave it a great atmosphere. Thursday turned out to be a good night as there were quite a number of itinerant northerners in London who naff off on a Friday and it didn't compete with anything else. It didn't cost a lot to put on (after the initial investment in equipment) but did take quite a bit of effort in terms of publicity (flyers, bull-sh*tting on internet forums etc) to make sure people knew it was on; I regularly got asked "are you still doing that Thursday night thing?". The publicity worked as many people who had never been thought we were running some massive club. The wife of one DJ was heard to say on entering the venue "Bloody hell! Its a sh*t hole!" (Please note: the venue has now been refurbished and so sadly doesn't still smell of the thames) Some people left early to get the last tube, but others carried on and took their chances on getting home. The downside was that it left me absolutely cream crackered on the Friday after it was on - I was useless at work on those days and unscrupulous work "colleagues" sometimes tried to take advantage of that. I'm sure we were responsible for many a sicky on the third Friday of the month in London. If I were you I'd just go ahead and see what happens, you'll get all sorts of conflicting advice if you ask people for their opinions. Personally I wouldn't just let anyone turn up and DJ though as you wouldn't get a core of regulars (other than DJ's ) because you wouldn't have a consistent music policy, and you need a core of regulars. There are loads of people with good collections in and around london who don't regularly DJ but should be asked and we tried to get guests who played the sort of tunes we wanted to hear rather than just putting a big name on the flyer for the sake of it. Please note that I have no idea what the scene is like in London these days as I haven't lived there for 7 years. What we did seemed to work at the time. Give it a go - what's the worst that can happen? Cheers Paul

Seems this has the soul-source seal of approval ... Did nobody hear the chap on the right say "back in the day" ?!? -
If I were you, I'd try this on ebay. A VG copy recently made $860 and there were plenty of bidders. Just a suggestion

The Jackie Wilson is on ebay [here]

This is now becoming an obsession! I've just listened to both tracks (the vid I posted and PB's sound clip) and the lead singers sound the same. Should I edit wikipedia? Edit: Here's a [link to a biography of The Black Abbots] which states they started in 1969 and were initially a serious band. So, one and the same band - I rest my case
-
So the lister of the acetate in my original post is absolutely correct and I was laughing for no good reason I listened to the sound clip on PB's site and it doesn't sound like Russ and his mates, but if it was a UK release I doubt they would have chosen/been able to use the same name as a well known band. Maybe it was one of the other band members doing the vocals as they probably started out as a serious band and then realised they could make more money clowning about. So I'm sticking with my story that Russ Abbot got plays. Edit: I've just checked wikipedia and evidently Russ Abbot formed the Black Abbots in 1977 so it probably was a different band if "The Painter" got plays in 1974. (Why am i researching The Black Abbots FFS!) Gutted! That all said it is still a sh*te tune! .... and this is a souless thread which is probably teetering on the brink of freebasing
-
I hope it does become another Danny Moore, then I'll get a copy! Unbelievable that Danny Moore became an unplayable record just because it surfaced in quantity, it is soooo good! Power to the knob wavers.
-
Is this it? I can't believe The Black Abbots got played !!! Everyone should be ashamed Edit: I notice Mike Hughes name is on the credits

I've just read through Webby's thread (another hour of my life that I'll never get back) and I think it officially seals the parting of the scene. Choose your door: 1. Rare Soul - incredibly rare tunes only please on original vinyl. 2. R&B/Popcorn/Mod/Gritty etc - anything in those genres (and maybe a bit of Ska and Latin and anything else if it fits) regardless of cost. 3. Northern Soul - you can only play what is on the list and so has the official seal of approval from the baggies and vest brigade or sounds like whats on the list. Possibly bootlegs and CDs OK. 4. Modern Soul - wishy washy anything from 70's to present day that is soulful and danceable. Myself, I think I'm going with No 2 these days but I still like stuff from 1, 3 & 4. Northern Soul is just a label that someone used to describe a certain type of music played in certain venues in the North of England in the 70's. Maybe that should remain its definition and be left at that. Trying to label all these different types of music will just result in the plethora of genres that exist today (e.g. hard funky techno trance - yes I did just make that up but it probably has been used). My socks are blue but may not quite match.

The wording of the listings of both people look similar too: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270540969640 https://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-FRANKIE-BEVERLY-THE-BUTLERS_W0QQitemZ260585155111QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item3cac15ea27 "Much sought after" - probably just a coincidence

I bought 200 from bagsunlimited in 2007 and they told me the postage would be high so I told them to find out how much. It turned out to be $25.15 which about doubled the cost for 200 sleeves but I reckoned at about $50 they were worth it (25c each). When they turned up they had put them in a large (heavy) cardboard box which would have held twice the number of sleeves! Anyway, I asked them in 2008 how much it would cost to post 1000 and 2000 sleeves and this is what they said: The cost on 1000 S7P is $108.78 with a weight of 21 lbs. The cost to ship by US Postal Service International Mail is $85.50 with delivery in 2 weeks. The cost to ship by DHL is $93.65 with delivery in 4 business days. The cost on 2000 S7P is $205.44 with a weight of 40 lbs. The cost to ship by USPS is $142.50 and the cost to ship by DHL is $140.74 I didn't go ahead with the order as I couldn't get a definite commitment from people who had said they would be interested in having some. So it roughly doubles the cost of the sleeves to about 20c each which isn't bad really. The bags unlimited ones fit in the covers 33 cardboard sleeves too. Maybe I should import some and sell them on my web site?

Sorry, I don't understand. Are you selling records?
-
THIS IS SOLD, THANKS. 21st Century - Coming Right Back/Shadow of a Memory - DOT 17190 I've a nice M- demo copy of this for sale, there is a pencil "X" on the Shadow side other than that it is really clean. The price on this seems to yo yo a bit, Manship has it guided at £250 and popsike shows it at between $250 and $300 so I'd like offers around £200 for it. Postage will be £5.60 special delivery in the UK Drop me a pm or email me at ptp@just7.co.uk Cheers Paul

I'm going to state the obvious here as nobody else has; the one you have is the bootleg so it isn't worth 200 quid. The original is the red/white checked one with blue lettering (see JM's latest guide for examples).

I think the B side is most appropriate in this case: "What A Price To Pay"
