I've been selling a lot of my records over the last year but I've kept the ones that I really like. I've started buying again but only one or two here and there. My collection won't be limited but I won't be needing extra shelf space anytime soon.

Warning This Piece Of Shite Is At It Again Buyers Beware

Hi, Sorry for being a dummy but how did you get that information to show? Cheers Paul -
I sold quite a few of my records a year or so ago, mainly the stuff I'd bought because I thought I should have them in my box when I dj'd. I put all the stuff I really liked and that meant something to me into a separate box and then started selling all the rest. I now don't DJ or go out anywhere, but I've started buying records that are just for me and it is much more enjoyable. The money I raised from selling records funds my sailing - new sails, refurbishing my vintage dinghy, etc etc. I'm starting to enjoy my records again, but I doubt I'll ever set foot in a soul night or niter ever again. I could probably play a better set than I ever did too which is a bit ironic. Cheers Paul

Regretted selling the Casualeers - Dance, Dance, Dance on a demo for £20 about 10 years ago but only because the price shot up to £200 after the guy I sold it to started playing it. It had been in my sales box for a year before that. Its probably back to 20 now (I hope!) Really regret selling my white label 70's pressing of Reconsider though, only got a few quid and didn't need it, I'd just got tired of my records. I sold a lot of originals around the same time and don't miss any of them. Anyone got one cheap?

Northern Soul Monster Tempests Someday (On Stardust)
paultp replied to Theothertosspot's topic in Look At Your Box
It looks like the silly price for the 45 has started to push up the price of the LP; there's a couple on ebay at the moment that look like they are heading for £100 plus. -

I buy very few records these day, but I've wanted a copy of Freddie Houston - If I had Known for ages and they always seem to go for too much moola (or I am too tight! - no need to comment ) Anyway, one appeared on ebay, so I stuck a snipe on it and forgot about it. I "won" it for about 220 dollars, the seller had described it as "Strong VG - good gloss" which probably affected the price. Now I don't mind the odd pop and click (adds to the authenticity IMO) but an ebay VG can be a horrid thing. So I paid and then started the worry about whether it would turn up, what condition would it be in, would I have to pay a walloping customs charge and that heinous PO handling charge, etc etc It arrived really quickly, the seller had sent it tracked to port of exit from the states and then signed for which usually means it gets nicked, but (bless him) he'd put a low value on the customs ticket. So it wasn't nicked and I didn't get hit by a large fee. I didn't ask him to do any of this. I opened it up and it looked lightly marked but not too bad. I played it and it hissed, so I cleaned with a bit of warm water and played it again - clean as a whistle! The label is fairly clean too. How good is that? It has restored my faith in US sellers (well, that one anyway), I might start looking for some more long time wants.

They should have booked both of them. Does Ian still have his "Mecca" tunes or has he moved on?
-
I think I posted this on a similar thread about a year ago but IMHO it might be worth asking again. Would it have been OK if he had held the records up for people to see whilst he played the tunes off CD? Can't see what the fuss is about, presumably it was just a bit of nostalgia for a long closed club. Should he have gone out and bought a load of records that he used to have 40 years ago in order to play the night? I'd have thought that for a mecca revival night it would be more important to have Colin Curtis playing a set than for Colin Curtis to have records. All IMVHO

I decided to do the same just over a year ago and found that the good stuff sells easily and the other stuff takes time but still sells. IMHO if you don't need to sell and want a decent price for your records; build a web site, put the records on and post them as they sell. Offering to dealers just invites a low price IMHO and with ebay you're trying to find a buyer in 7 days. Some records sell well in a week and some stuff takes a year or more. Mind you if I listed more stuff on the web site it might sell quicker. After selling about 6 grands worth in a few months I found that I didn't want to part with some records and so put them in a small box. This has recently started to get fuller unfortunately.

I think there's still the odd error: 17 Dell-Vikings Finger Poppin' Woman Fee Bee M- 300

Can someone explain to me why that 4 tops LP went for almost £250? I'm sure my copy cost me a tenner. I'm not sniping at the price, I'd just like to know if there was anything special about it. I thought the bottom was dropping out of the LP market. Cheers Paul

IMHO there are only two US postal services worth using; the expensive "tracked all the way" one which is over $30 but does ensure the vinyl gets to you, and the standard airmail. Standard airmail is anonymous and as long as a high value isn't shown on the customs slip, it too almost always gets to you. Anything else, including the "tracked until it leaves US and then signed for" just gets nicked, probably at the UK end.

Would Anyone Grade This Record Ex+ ? (Bought On Soul Source)
paultp replied to Ulrich Leitl's topic in Look At Your Box
There's no point agreeing a grading scale because anyone who over grades records will still over grade. I try and under grade but still make mistakes - it comes down to people's perceptions of grade - I'll always give a refund though. Anyone who wants to regularly sell records is likely to be honest because if you're not people won't buy from you again. I've bought records from regular sellers that were massively over graded and I just don't buy from them again, no matter what the record is. Most things I've bought from sales on here have been fine though. And no, I won't be doing any naming -
$246 !!!!!! :hypo: What is a proper price for this?

This reminded me of when I sold a beautiful 60's portable record player on eBay, it was one of those where the top part of the case was actually a speaker. It was smaller than those handbag looking ones and really quite neat, still worked perfectly. The lady who bought it said could I post it quickly as her daughter was going to glue it to a guitar along with some records as part of a school project. I almost refused to send it. Fifty quid just to ruin it - Philistines. Mind you, fifty quid is fifty quid and twice what I paid for it so I put my feelings to one side

Would Anyone Grade This Record Ex+ ? (Bought On Soul Source)
paultp replied to Ulrich Leitl's topic in Look At Your Box
It is really difficult to grade records, anything below M- should have a description of what the record is like and a sound file, a scan is always nice too. I agree with anyone who says that UK sellers tend to over grade, though this generally applies to occasional sellers rather than regular dealers. -
Picked up my Yvonne Baker in San Francisco for $50 - the guy had two and I was sure it was a boot but it turns out it isn't. Only got one tho, this was about 2000 or so. The hotel lost my Boss suit which I put in to get cleaned so I'm not sure if I got a bargain or not.

Don't worry, everyone will be much nicer to you now they know you have two boxes of records to sell
