I quite like the first one, a bit more to it than 2 & 3

I wondered if someone could tell me which came first of these labels, also what is the going price please? (the second and third are demo and issue of the same label version) Thanks Paul
-
Didn't you trade me your copy? Dunno, can't remember and the messages from 2007 have gone now. I'm quite happy to consider any good record of roughly the same value, I like 60's Northern and R&B. Cheers Paul

OK here's the 2nd CD given away in Jan 2001. DJ's in 2000 were: Adey Potts, Mark Bicknell, Soulful Chris, Gene Robertson, Yann Vatisse, Simon Humphreys, Benjii Schlamp, Alan H, Dave Flynn, Roger Stewart, Greg McAlinney and of course Jo Wallace, Martin Thomson and myself. Ithangyou! https://www.mixcloud.com/paultp/these-old-shoes-2nd-anniversary-cd-jan-2001/

I don't know what the situation is now but I do know that my missus registered "The Temptations" as a trademark for Otis Williams some years ago. A lot of members of groups from the 60's and 70's are squabbling over the rights to use the original group name, particularly as the nostalgia tour scene is so lucrative.
-
Depends whether the last DJ was crap or not.

I never go out to niters or soul nights any more, as I've realised what I want out of this Northern Soul thingamajig is to hear music I like from the original format. Its the "music I like" bit that has stopped me going out. I don't want a night of oldies most of which I think are crap because I wasn't on the scene in the 70's so have no nostalgia angle. I went to Wigan once and thought it was sh*t and not worth the hassle to get there. I wish I'd gone to Stafford as most of the music played seems right up my street. I also don't want to hear a succession of mediocre records played because they are expensive.I don't want to hear this new funky nonsense either, there was a whole thread of this stuff a few months back and it was uniformly dull. I used to play modern soul CD's as background music in my pub as that is what it is mostly, so I don't want to hear that either. The last time I DJ'd I felt like some sort of prostitute as I had to refill my box with motown and cheesy oldies and do two sets going on after sets of boots were played. That was my revelation moment - never again. So now I buy records for myself, I buy and sell a bit to get hold of records I want - Northern Soul, R&B, popcorn, even a bit of 70's, and I don't care about what is going on "on the scene". My top budget is £200 and I rarely spend that so some of my records are a tad scratchy. I accept that I am never going to own fantastic records like Lester Tipton because they are out of my budget (if I had £6k to waste I would buy a camper van or a new dinghy) unless the hoped for avalanche of records and ensuing plummet in prices occurs. So thanks to all the constant threads like this one I've had another "revelation" moment and realised that I don't care about who is spending what on records, I don't care if people are wearing baggy trousers in their 60's, I don't care if people are bootlegging records, I don't care if DJ's (and I use the term loosely) are playing bootlegs and I don't care if people are dancing to bootlegs. All this hand wringing about "the scene is dying" "he's playing bootlegs - burn him!" "Who cares about OVO" is really irrelevant to me because, like Andy J in a way, for me it is all about the music, its not about the scene whatever that is anymore. I have thought about starting up a night playing the music I like but dismissed it as I haven't got the time, I don't think I have the commitment any more, I can't find a suitable venue, I need a couple of other like minded souls to join in and I question whether there is a market anymore. So if I want to subject other people to music I like it is mixcloud for me. So thank you soul-source for clearing everything up for me. It is all about the music but it is my choice regarding what I listen to, where and on what format. My current choices are; what I like, at home, original vinyl and I'm content. I don't care what anyone else's choices are and they are free to do what they want. Cheers Paul

Unless two bidders have the same strategy, then it all ends in tears.
-
You have to question why anyone would bootleg these two tunes though. People who collect originals won't want them, people who don't like "rare sh*t" won't want them, wannabee DJ's won't want them as they are too rare so they will empty the floor. What's the market for them? Personally I can't stand either tune, I think both are a triumph for rarity over quality but that's just MHO.
-
Why did you buy it then? You had no idea what you were buying, bought it anyway, complained, returned it and got refunded. Then left negative feedback. The only good thing to come out of this (as you are obviously not going to withdraw the neg) is that record sellers reading this will hopefully add your ebay id to their blocked bidders list. There are so many stupid buyers on ebay it will be good to at least reduce them by one.

I know the answer to this is "read another topic" but I couldn't care less if they played bootlegs at Blackpool, they can play home made cassettes or mixes from mixcloud. I doubt there were very many there making a pilgrimage there to hear records they couldn't hear anywhere else. Its turning into a boot v OVO thread (like everything else does) and personally I think that OVO is dying because people keep trying to ram the concept down peoples' throats when they actually don't care. Those that do care know where to go to hear what they want on the format they want, so why complain about what is played to people who largely couldn't care what format is played to them? That isn't a criticism of those that attend events like this, It isn't a criticism of people who don't care about format either. I think everyone is old enough to choose for themselves what they want to do. If there were 3000 there and format is an issue, were there hundreds of complaints?
-
They normally have a remit from the people that own the trademarks or some organisation working on their behalf. You won't stop people bootlegging until whoever owns the rights to the labels/tunes/whatever threatens to sue ebay (deep pockets needed I would think) and also acts against the bootleggers. Unfortunately most of them seem to consider it not worth the effort or money. Universal ought to protect the motown labels but it doesn't, hence all the tatty bootleg t-shirts and mugs sold at weekenders and on ebay, not to mention the looky likey bootleg records.

It was, my snipe was almost treble that but I was the only bidder. Which was nice

Thanks to everyone for their opinions, I remember asking for this in 2007 thinking it was 150 to 200 and in the end doing trades from my sales box for it I think. I picked this up cheap so I don't want top dollar but I'm not giving it away either. I think I might just take a scan of it and a sound file and put it up in sales, I'd still prefer to trade it. Cheers Paul

Jim, Your reply would have more relevance if you mentioned that it was your offer to me which prompted me to ask this question. I won't talk it up if you don't talk it down Cheers Paul

I have a spare copy of this which I've offered for trades without any response so I was going to put it in Sales but I don't know what a "going rate" is. I bloody love the record but appreciate it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I don't want to know what is on popsike or collector's frenzy as I can check those myself (and have done), and I don't need to know what JM has it at either. What I'd like is a fair assessment from the knowledgeable folk here. Many thanks Paul P.S. For those that don't know it, it is the first tune in this mix: https://www.mixcloud.com/paultp/20-bloke-tunes-in-a-set/

What a crock. If you don't know what you're buying don't blame the seller. The worst thing you've done is continue to complain when you've been refunded. You should be ashamed of yourself, grow up.

I put a coffee machine up recently for 99p no reserve and as I hadn't got any boxes I put the postage to "collection only" and also made a point of saying this in the listing. I just thought it was too good to throw away but according to my missus the new shiny expensive one made better coffee. I hoped I'd get the price of a pint out of it. As the auction was proceeding, some doughnut sends me a message saying "I'm the high bidder but I can't collect so can you give me a buy it now price with the postage". So I tell him I'm not posting it as it will only break and asked him to retract his bid. The auction ends at about a fiver but the doughnut is the winning bidder. He again says he can't collect so I tell him that I'll offer it to the next highest bidder. The second bidder turns out to also be a doughnut who lives at the other end of the country so doesn't take up the option. I get back to first doughnut and tell him I'm going to cancel the transaction to get my selling fees back then relist the coffee machine. The doughnut then pays for the coffee machine. I am now a seller who has been paid but the buyer is not going to collect. I speak to the doughnut who says he has paid but doesn't want the coffee machine. I worry that I am still open to a neg so I phone ebay who tell me that as the item has been paid for it is between me and the buyer, they advise me to refund him minus the selling and paypal fees (which they will not give me back as he has paid). So that is what I did. ebay told me that if he leaves me a neg they will remove it but happily I didn't have to test this out. The good end to this was that I relisted the coffee machine and it sold for a tenner! Somebody drove through from Leeds to pick it up as well.

I can't see a link to the catalogues anywhere on that site. Can you post one up please?
-
Yeah, I didn't read it right, I'll put my specs on next time.

I quite like the way that the fist bidder bid $19.99 then decided that wasn't going to be enough so put a second bid in .......... ............. of $22.99 The winner was quite lucky too as that last bidder (who came second) bid 899.87 which looks to be exactly the same as the winning bidders highest bid. Phew!

If this is the original ebay listing I don't know what you are complaining about: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-60s-Southern-R-R-RAY-ROYALS-Let-Me-Know-DELTA-503-HEAR-BOTH-SIDES-/110962486131?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&ssPageName=RSS:B:SHOP:US:101&hash=item19d5e12b73&nma=true&si=kOLMGajHPIWiL0Sg0kIc2tjvL5s%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I put a scan up of a white demo a while ago The above is still a bargain at £6 even if it isn't a demo, I've seen this go for £30 plus on ebay
