  1. But people aren't getting the record cheap, they are getting an expensive counterfeit that is actually worthless. If they want the tune cheap then just get it on CD or mp3, all the oldies are available and they weigh a lot less. But that is generally what these recent boots are and what the topic is about. People are pressing up vinyl using any old sound as the basis and then selling them for two or three times what they cost to make. It is a bit like buying fake designer clothes, you're OK when you're with other people in fake designer clothes but what you are actually wearing are usually obvious, cheap, badly made fakes.
  2. I have to say that not many people seemed to know the Dynamic Superiors when I played it at The Attic when djing with Jo Wallace (seems ages ago now; probably 2011). It caused at least a couple of well known collectors/DJs to sidle across to the decks for a peek. Think I posted on the "cheap but brilliant" thread as well. Great tune but too cheap to go massive.
  3. Unfortunately it needs the record companies/label owners to take ebay to task but most seem happy to sit on their hands. I wonder if PPL or PRS would be interested or if its within their remit. Can't see it stopping whilst people are happy to buy them.
  4. Craig Moerer has 70 of them all mint https://www.recordsbymail.com
  5. Too much turkey and everything else! Knackered from sailing two races yesterday as well. Up at Yorkshire Dales SC today for the annual "Brass Monkey" races, so I'll probably post more rubbish this evening
  6. Or possibly from American football: "In American football, the pocket refers to the horse-shoe shaped area formed by offensive lineman to protect the quarterback during a passing play. If the lineman do their job, the pocket will protect the QB long enough for him to find an open receiver and throw. If a defensive player penetrates the pocket too quickly, the QB will likely get sacked." So the quarterback is usually safe whilst "in the pocket"
  7. Not my definition but something found on google: "When a drummer plays a groove that "is very solid and with a great feel...", this is referred to informally as being "in the pocket"; when a drummer "maintains this feel for an extended period of time, never wavering, this is often referred to as a deep pocket."[15] Might be?
  8. Actually, I might have hit on something there. Would it be better if all records, no matter how rare, only cost $10? Rare records would still be rare records but it would be finding them and discovering new sounds that would be admired rather than someone having lashed out the price of a small car. Anything that was rare but crap would surely be cast aside as it would be the finding of good records that would be the key to the scene. Everyone could afford anything, it would be taste and the ability to find records that mattered. Wouldn't that be Utopia? Merry Christmas
  9. The thing is though, it isn't a $5000 record - its a rare record, records only get price tags put on them because somebody has paid that much in the past. Records would all be about $10 including postage if it wasn't for the fact that more people want to own them than there is quantity of any particular record. When that becomes the case it is those that are prepared to pay more than others that get to own the record. One day that will be $5000 the next it could be £3000 or $10000 (all barking sums for a record IMHO). What the driver is behind people competing to pay large sums of money for records I don't know, I suppose owning a trophy record is one aspect but I don't think it is everyone's motivation. Personally, I don't spend large sums on records because I am still anxious about funding my old age. Record buying is a hobby for me and I am not motivated by others knowing what I spend on records or knowing what records I have. I've never really understood the notion that spending a lot of money on records or owning certain records somehow gives someone status. Anyone without the funds for the basics in life shouldn't have any hobby that involves spending relatively large amounts on essentially worthless items.
  10. Please stop digging and climb out of the hole while you can. If you don't think that saying you bid $888 for a laugh comes across as smug then you must have the thickest skin in the world or some form of autism (I sincerely apologise if you do have the latter my comment isn't meant to mock that affliction). When I mentioned what a discerning buyer you must be I was being sarcastic. There are plenty of knackered records on ebay, and damaged copies of rarities are auctioned with a reasonable frequency. Whether you think it should be auctioned is no reason to go and knacker the auction. Mind you, given that you don't think bidding $888 for a laugh and telling everyone comes across as smug, I doubt you realised that putting a high bid in for a laugh and then retracting it would affect anyone other than yourself. I actually think your keeping this thread going for a laugh too.
  11. Well it is everyone's business since you came on here smugly telling everyone you can chuck $800+ at a record just for a laugh. Then telling everyone that you're such a discerning buyer that you don't even bother to read the description or look at the pictures before chucking said amount at the record for a laugh. No wonder record prices are through the roof with people like you about. Then you come back on here telling everyone that you've withdrawn your bid - who cares? Well the seller might as you've gone a long way to knackering his auction by appearing to bid the record up and the high bidder might as you've exposed what his top bid is to all the other bidders by chucking money at the record. I wouldn't be surprised if a few bids are now retracted and the seller has to start again. Unbelievable that after giving us a running commentary on your actions, you then come on here trying to defend them and say isn't anybody else's business what you do with your money. At least you changed your name to something appropriate.
  12. I've spent 2012 umming and ahhing about selling up, however I've actually bought quite a few records, but I'm now considering selling up again. I got rid of a lot of records in 2011 so I'm down to a couple of boxes now. I haven't been to a single soul night, dayer, weekend or niter and haven't missed it. My sailing has improved considerably, and I've spent some of the money I got selling records on refurbishing and improving my vintage dinghy.
  13. I think the OP has it spot on; people get what people want, so people want what people get. Its the same reason there is so much sh*te on the telly; people watch it so they keep on making it and showing it, then people watch it. You can tell how crap British telly is these days by comparing it with how well crafted some of the foreign programs are when compared to ours. e.g. The Killing v New Tricks (Actually, that might make good thread for freebasing) Why anyone watches soap operas or stuff like Strictly Come Dancing is beyond me. The latter has turned into a sort of sinister caricature of itself IMHO, in the same way that Northern Soul has in many cases. Keeping the comparison going; johnny foreigner seems to run a better scene than in the UK, same as the telly.
  14. Just need to put it in perspective; when I joined the army in 1976, 5 quid was a third of a weeks wages. Buying a record for £20 was a major investment which is why I didn't If you were to take 2 weeks wages now and spend it on a record, that would be the rough equivalent of dropping £25 in 1974. We still had 10 bob notes then!

  16. That is so cheap for such a good record, and on first issue (not the red second). I can't believe it didn't sell at £15. What is the world coming to?
  17. The difference between a gem stone having a value and a record having a value is the gem stone is an accepted commodity because there is only so much of it on the planet. Cutting it and presenting it adds to the cosmetic value but the intrinsic value is in the commodity. A work of art is a one off, somebody produces something by craft and imagination that is thought to be beautiful and is thus sought after and so becomes valuable, although it has no intrinsic value in the materiel it is made of. I actually think the prices paid for works of art are obscene too. A record is just something that is a medium enabling a sound to be recorded. The sound can be reproduced on any other medium used for recording sounds. So it should be the sound that is important as that is the creative part. (Ooops, heading to an OVO argument) Collecting records is an interesting hobby but paying £8.5k for something that in itself has no intrinsic value is barking as well as obscene IMHO. I don't think I'd feel differently if I won the lottery, I'd be able to buy more records but I'd still not pay over the odds, I certainly wouldn't drop thousands of pounds on a record just to have it and I'd only buy records that were really good. I'd rather give £8.5k away than spend it something as frivolous as a record. (Don't start forming a queue ). As for the money going back to society - how do you work that one out? Money doesn't really exist, it is just something that acts as a middleman in a barter.
  18. I actually think it is obscene to pay £8.5k for a record
  19. I was really pleased when loads turned up, I could afford and get a copy. Beautiful tune. I hope loads of copies of every record I want are found
  20. Things were covered up for a variety of reasons AIUI; for exclusivity, for credibility and also to try and prevent label owners reissuing tunes if they became popular.
  21. In the early 2000's when I was still doing These Old Shoes, somebody was having a right moan about missing a copy of Deep Dark Secret which had finished at about 3 am. I owned up to being the winner (less than $50 - it wasn't that well known or in demand then) and the loser said "I didn't think anyone else would stay up to bid on it, bid right at the last moment and I didn't have time to bid again" At this point, amid some sn*****ing, I admitted to being tucked up in bed asleep and explained snipe bidding (again not that common at the time) - his face was a picture
  22. This was released as Jocko - Blast Off To Love on Wand. Or is this another version? I think Douglas henderson was Jocko
  23. Nothing for the buyer, $18 - $20 for the seller, sometimes less if they are a big seller.
