  1. I do like a dance but I haven't been out for ages. I'm a crap dancer but in my head I'm Fred Astaire.
  2. A bit too close to the bone for me I'm afraid, I'm off into hospital tomorrow to have my pacemaker changed as the battery is running down after nearly 9 years of sterling service. Not looking forward to it at all, hopefully I will be back out on Friday (on my feet not in a box). Cheers Paul
  3. I've been trying to think of a good reason why people raising money for charities might be a bad thing ............ and I can't. Why complain?
  4. I play my records fairly regularly but often pack them away for a week or two, then get them back out again. Probably only got about 500 45s now and about 150 LPs. Buying is pretty much the same - every few weeks I root about and buy a few records, I don't chase anything I just pick stuff up as I see it. so I probably miss a lot. I buy some stuff to sell on but I'm doing that less and less as it is a minefield really. Things like mixcloud have got me interested again as I can put together sets when I have the time and also listen to other people's stuff.
  5. It's been happening for a while that more common records just do not sell, no matter how good they are. Perhaps the hike in US postage prices will change this. But prices for records go up and down all the time and with markets like eBay it is difficult to know what a set sale price should be. I think the price of rare records will continue upwards as those with the (presumably) sufficient disposable income compete for them. I started selling last year but got to a point where I was putting more records in the "I think I'll keep that" box than the "sell" box, so I stopped and started buying again :-) Personally, I hope people get spooked by these rumours and dash to sell their records off before they are worthless. There's nothing beats a load of sellers for ensuring that prices drop. Ask Gordon Brown. Bring on cheaper records! Sell up now, they will be worthless next year.
  6. I'm waiting for a few more from the same seller so I'll see what happens with them. Odd though.
  7. Hi, Wonder if anybody in Sweden could tell me how much to post 7 x 45s in a 45 mailer (with no stiffeners!) to the UK please. Bought some records from the US and they have turned up with a Swedish post paid label on them (which was surprising) but no postage price. Just want to check that I haven't been overcharged for postage. Weight on customs sticker (in english?) is 1 lb (are the swedish still on imperial weight?). The whole thing is a bit odd. Thanks Paul
  8. I've had two websites for ages, one which had all my records for sale and one which was a blog of sorts. I've finally got round to merging the two sites so that everything is in the same place. I've uploaded a good few records but still have loads to go and not got round to the LP's yet but I thought I'd post up a link here while I'm waiting for Google to get round to crawling the site. www.paulsrecords.co.uk I might even get round to posting something interesting on there in the near future! :-) Let me know if there are any probs, cheers.
  9. Finally got round to uploading the 3rd Anniversary CD https://www.mixcloud.com/paultp/these-old-shoes-anniversary-cd-3-jan-2002/
  10. If it plays OK I'll buy it as long as it is priced accordingly. I don't think of myself as a collector though, I buy records because I like them but I don't "collect" as such. If I get bored with stuff I sell it and rarely regret it. I don't collect labels or artists or anything I just buy records I like cos I like records. Does that make sense?
  11. I might get shouted down for this as when I asked about it last year or so I was told it was a cheap oldie, and sure enough it was a very easy find. So it has probably been getting plays everywhere for the last 4 decades but I'd never heard it and it "sounds just right for today" as they say. Johnny Moore - Call It What You Wanna - Chi-City
  12. Probably off topic, but I had a similar thing from my family history website recently. A guy fills in the contact form with details of what he is stuck on so I take an hour to rummage round the problem, put the family together, look at his tree on ancestry and decide what needs doing (local research at 2 different archives) and send him an email covering what I've found, my conclusions and suggestions of what needs to be done to try and solve the problem, also give him a run down of my (v cheap) costs. He replies and says "thanks very much, I'll take that on board, unfortunately I have no money" Presumably he thought I was going to rush off to Wakefield and Leeds for a couple of mornings out of the goodness of my heart? You do wonder sometimes.
  13. I never answer wants because as soon as I see someone asking for a record I want to keep it. There is probably a medical term for this condition.
  14. To be honest, unless you inherit money you don't get rich with that attitude. The stupidity of this Terry Callier auction is that if the buyer had put a want up on here and said they were prepared to pay £400 for a mint issue, they would probably have got one. Instead the winning bidder looks to have put a number of bids in at various (almost) reasonable levels until on 8 Feb, after being outbid and some 13 hours before the auction finish, they put a lump of a bid in. After that a snipe bid 6 seconds before the end (with an equally lumpy bid) pushed the winning bidder up about $370. I reckon the winning bidder has taken the view that by putting a large bid in they will outbid everyone sensible, but unfortunately somebody else with deep pockets has had a similar strategy. I wonder if one of them is a bit hacked off today while the other is saying "phew!"
  15. I've been trying to remember when I first heard the term OVO, I think it is a relatively recent thing for me which probably coincided with people starting to press up bootlegs again. There were always 70's bootlegs about but as others have said; nobody would have dreamed of DJing with them. Then probably in the early to mid 2000's people started pressing up every big expensive tune. I think that's when I first heard it mentioned. So it may have coincided with the rapid growth of ebay use. in the late 90's relatively few people used ebay (6 records for a dollar ) then it gradually became mainstream and so presented an easy market for counterfeiters in general.
  16. There are no rules, everyone can do what they want, they will attract like minded individuals. Now everyone repeat after me: "We're all individuals! We can do what we want!"
  17. My experience with UK Tamla Motown LPs is that most are relatively easy to come by but a lot are rubbish. I occasionally take up my quest to complete the first 100 only to pack it in again rapidly as another dull LP turns up. I started ages ago just wanting all the chartbuster series as they remind me of my youth but they didn't take very long. There are some tough ones that go for reasonable money; a lot of the first ten issued are tough; also The Elgins, The Monitors, Chris Clark, Earl Van Dyke, a dreadful series of Billy Eckstine LPs, the Motown Memories series (of 3? - need to root them out to check). Generally, the earlier the issue the more difficult to find but there are exceptions. All the NS related ones are a bit harder to track down and tend to go for £10 to £20. Sophisticated Soul used to go for £25 but I reckon £15 would get a copy now. People tend not to be fussed whether they get a UK or US copy. The thing about UK Tamla Motown LPs is that if they get into the hands of dealers the prices seem to rocket to 30, 40 or 50 quid for quite common LPs. There are usually loads on ebay UK at inflated prices (nothing new there!) and loads at much less. There is a list of UK LPs here Don't know anything really about Oriole or Stateside but the Oriole Lp's always seem to go for good money.
  18. Not sure this is a good thread as I can see what I've been spending! Anyway, these are the last few things that Ive received: Bobby Hill To The Bitter End LOLO 2307 (bought for the other side) NORTHERN 45-THE DRAMATICS-ALL BECAUSE OF YOU ( a bit rough but very cheap) Archie Bell & the Drells Tighten Up LP (bought for A Thousand Wonders, had the pic sleeve 45 but sold it and then missed it, this turned up absolutely stone mint) FREDDIE SCOTT I'll Be Gone (Just over $30 off eBay - just the job) MAVIS RIVERS - Footsteps Of A Fool (through the door today, might sell this on) Cheers Paul
  19. You have to go through their labyrinth that is customer support, eventually (if you are obtuse enough) you will get the options "Phone Chat or email" (possibly not all of them). I've done it when some dope bought a collection only item, didn't want to collect but then paid . I ended up with a phone number to discuss my options and they were actually very helpful. https://pages.ebay.com/help/account/contact-customer-support.html
  20. Really nice, I just went looking for a copy then found out it is the other side to "A Fat Boy Can Cry" which I've already got
  21. I think it is pretty good, very clever. I think if a slightly lesser well known (and loved) backing had been used it wouldn't have been subjected to so many derisory comments. Maybe a less well know vocal too
  22. I wonder if The Carpets is the one that sold on ebay recently? If so it only went for about £20 quid more, only JM made money there.
  23. Getting Trading standards to act is a bit of a catch 22, they will only do something if it can be proved and that needs the label owners or whoever has the rights to complain first. Using the designer clothes analogy again, most clothing brands actively pursue counterfeiters and so it is policed. The music business doesn't really seem to care about anything other than current tunes because they still haven't woken up to the money to be made from back catalogues (other than Beatles, stones etc). Universal are the worst culprits IMO as they do nothing about people ripping off one of the best brands in the music business - Motown.
