  2. I've been reading about this guy on here...so interesting, a real character! as for that record on Bell - I've got it. Its a Demo issue only, I think. Red text and a black text issue. The flip is a hot record called "you make everything better". I think its fairly expensive now.
  3. What a gentleman! He really was. I'd always look forward to the Hamburg weekender knowing I'd spend a good amount of time with 'Tiki Joe' and his great mates (him and Shane particularly, were like a double act). There were always good-natured laughs and talking about records/trainers and everything else.... I'll miss his gentleness, wisdom and cheeky spirit. RIP Joe. My thoughts are with his family. Gary
  4. Pretty varied mix of things - reflected in the DJ's on offer. Personal preference is all genres in one room...all night. A lot of nights say they'll do it, but generally lean more toward one specific genre which tends to be up tempo...not always, but you go off what the punters want, I guess, plus the DJ's on the bill, and eventually you carve out an 'affiliated sound'.
  5. I had a bash at explaining it here, albeit in a specific context (£25.00 records) though the premise of the article was to challenge the perceived idea of the term "up front". https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-articles/£2500-and-under-the-challenge-r2929 In a broad sense, I think the notion of up-front culture within the soul scene, and I say culture because it extends beyond genre for me, is the overall approach to the music / venue / aesthetic. For example, you wouldn't have an upfront night with loads of baggies, and you wouldn't really want to hold it in a damp working mans club. So i'd argue that its part of a shift in the scene on the whole - more city centre based, free entry (doing away with old promotion cartels and the bullying that goes on about 'someones patch'). I wouldn't say its a largely younger movement though...but I od think it has a lot to do with the space thats used! N.B. Sorry for the typos in the attached link, i'd written the article on the train, on my phone.
  6. They pop up on eBay all the time - save it as a search - best of luck!
  7. I had exactly the same issue with Sam from the Blk Bee - I've got the Green Issue version on Elf which is more 'electronic sounding' if thats the right description. And I was sat there thinking...this sounds familiar...I'm sure i've got it. In the box for tomorrow - across the board soul sounds!
  8. Excellent records - plenty of scope for a few gems to be fed out here alongside some forgotten dancers. FYI - Running order for this Sat if anyone is keen or needs a last minute bit of persuasion - Different Strokes Back room is a follows: Running order is as follows: 9:00-9:30 Gary Bratchford 9:30-10:00 Nev 10:00-10:30 Dave Abbot 10:30-11:00 Adam Leaver 11:00-11:30 Adam Topping 11:30-12:00 Gary Bratchford 12:00-12:30 Nev 12:30-01:00 Dave Abbot 01:00-01:30 Adam Leaver 01:30-02:00 Adam Topping
  9. I had the same 7" ring wear concern and made the mistake of bringing the topic up with my pals in the pub.
  10. It diverts to this: cut A Russian registered, Canadian pharmaceutical webpage... site note link to dodgy site removed
  11. Love it. There is a great pub near my house, and across the road is the 'Mountain, Fire and Miracles Ministry' (check the site - interesting stuff) - sounds like something from Harry Potter. Anyway, fairly often you can hear gospel/soul not at all dissimilar to this - sat in the beer garden on a sunny Sunday its actually very pleasurable - big sound systems, really good singers and accompaniments and they're at it for hours! Its nuts when you really think about it because the place looks like a warehouse but all good with a pint from the outside https://www.churches-uk-ireland.org/images/manc/manc/mfmm.jpg
  12. I'd say somewhere in between the two prices above. I love that deep, flat trombone (?) that is peppered throughout the song.
  13. Is he the guy who predominately collects Jazz?
  14. Bully for you and your 30k records. I was meant to edit the post but I forgot. Not sure why I had 300K in mind because I had just read it, oh well.
  15. Looking forward to this. Strong female vocal to get things started - get in early as it'll be busy!
  16. 300,000 and a custom built storage system https://www.factmag.com/2014/05/17/check-out-this-guys-30000-strong-vinyl-collection/
  17. He's class - Sam Cooke Inspired. Apparently he was into Usher and similar shite until very recently. He was The Guardian's "One to Watch" over the weekend. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/feb/22/leon-bridges-vintage-soul-one-to-watch This record is beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0hXaQvwIgw

  20. Cristina Alonso is one, from the boiler club. The thread reflects the male dominance of the scene and sound, but those ladies who are in the game are pretty good, eh!
  21. Thats less of a list and more of a paragraph - that was hard word, ha! I'll take JAMES BROWN - Get up get into it get involved, please. Thanks. EDIT: Note for those potentially interested in the JB record, I cancelled my order because I found my copy, so possibly still available. Sorry for the fuss Rob, Best, Gary
  22. For me, its Malayaka. Every opportunity to have her play/hear her play I try. There is a great vid on Youtube of her double-checking with Soul Sam and she's ahead of the game, in my opinion. Little link to a pretty old article now RE the Manchester euro soul weekender and the rationale there was to book woman first. Often the best sets of the weekender because they're not trying to out-do anyone, they just have their own very intuitive groove. https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/news-soul/manchester-european-weekender-look-forward-26-27-may-2013-r2688
