  1. Hello, the following are next on my list of wants - happy to accept copies which are VG+ and above at reasonable prices - just long-time collection fillers really thanks, Gary Gil scott-heron lady day & john coltrane Ruby Andrews - Just loving you
  2. Well i guess they don't have social clubs...? I guess it wasn't a working class thing per-sa like it was here. you work with what you have I guess but there is no existing blue print there. I might be VERY wrong however, just an observation. Its also very city centric or cosmopolitan, not dotted on the outskirts of little town like we have them....but I guess we're going off point Although the Boiler is like a little hot 60's club isn't it?
  3. Europe is amazing, and as Dave rightly noted, part of the charm, and the contrast to here is the locations - the environments in which the music is experienced, played and consumed is, in my opinion better. I played in Milan and Zurich this year and the venues were fabulas, one of which was a resurant where the food and beer was free all day, on a great marble floor which filled up with young punters who just enjoyed the groove. Also Hamburg last year was another level - every set included reams of music that was so new and diverse - disco/boogie mixed with hard 60's soul. Henning Boogaloo posted up a play list from his time in Manchester last year - thats a good place to hear the Big European Records if you can't make it to every big venue on the continent

  8. I heard this is meant to be a pretty good film...
  9. It was a class night from start to finish. Mace's second set and Tony's too - next level music!
  10. Patti Austin - Didn't say a word As long as you can play it out i'm ok with that. Best, Gary.
  11. A clean copy of this please. thanks, Gary.
  12. Amended ;) it's not so bad actually . I guess its what you get for the price that has marred my view and possibly my ear somewhat. I suspect it was my good friend Liam who played me a clip sometime back and told me it was 'about' £3,000 to which my reply was...'no chance'. atb, Gary.
  13. I've had reservations and cold sweats at the thought of writing this but i've plucked up the courage.... *I don't like it*..... As a stand alone record its average, and the price is crazy. HOWEVER, I can see the appeal from a serious collectors POV and moreover, I could imagine it would work a treat in a well selected set of crossover/mid tempo's etc. Who are the lucky few to have this - or is it not an issues to be discussed?
  14. I was talking to Dereck about this today - shame its not busy because it deserves to be. I've been a few times and, it should be said, first time i arrived I was amazed by the venue: it is first class and very safe (and safe for a ginger kid means it must be decent). What should be noted is that most people who have commented positivity, though I could be wrong, are not local-enough. You need a good support locally, and I think where we live (Salford/Manchester) people just do their own things as Soultown Andy rightly said - one example is an oldies night I used to DJ at every month. It pulled in healthy crowd, but they went to the same 4 venues every month like clockwork - no deviation. They were like like a huge gang with others just popping into to this specific venue as their only outing of the month. So i guess that is what you are up against. Stick with it though, I'll be at the next one
  15. Deep Disco - good term. I like the term and the record!
  16. It almost has the same structure as Manchester...or very possible a future Manchester . We did a casual day affair and a meeting point for all weekender goers to catch up with fiends from all over UK/europe and listen to the amazing Greatstone guys, then a nighter, then a normal dayer/night event followed by the magical monday - but the whole thing was prob a bit too long in my opinion. DJ roster was defo not the same old, same old though but then you run the risk of not getting a mighty footfall.
  17. quote name='SallieJane' timestamp='1341443277' post='1770251'] I would really like to know if there is an appetite for a rare/underplayed/progressive weekender in the UK. Yes. re appetite, its not so much a question of hunger for rare/underplayed sounds as that is a progressive arm of the scene which has been pioneered for decades (and I saw the discussions on funk-edged stuff etc which is an example of it and is more related to a discussion on quality/personal taste) and people do want rare/underplayed/progressive. More appropriately, it is about peoples desire/hunger to try something which might be unconventional. The music at Manchester was all of the above. Each DJ played an outstanding selection of rare/underplayed records and the progressive element was in the structure (double decking), choice of DJ's (finding a good new DJ is like finding a great under played record and its about giving people a chance - Henning Boogaloo this year, Matt Fox last year and Leona / Adam Topping from the UK). Equally, the mixture of attendees, all of whom themselves could be considered progressively minded because they took a punt and invested time/energy/money into something different/new, and the feedback was great either for the weekend or the day visitors. Its more about how people choose to consume it or maybe a case of who is providing it, rather than issues for demand etc
  18. Sorted now - Big thanks to NZ soul for the contact.
  19. You've played it right Jodie. All above board and very considered.
  20. Jumpin *no messin* Joan - give it to me straight!
  21. I posted this on Ste's F.B wall (well similar theme) but..I think its interesting and hopefully they'll be a good cross-section of attendee's to reflect the numerous nuances of the scene and its participants, only because I always worry these events are populated by the main stakeholders whose 'voice' we're are already familiar with. Increasingly the scene is linked to memory and nostalgia, but what about innervation and the future (the social media element aside - because you don't have to be young to use social media). Easy for me to say as I'm younger than most and I've grown 'into' the scene rather than 'with it' but i'd be curious to see what would be said for 'youthful participation and agency' beyond buying records for instance - and that in-itself is a whole other topic. should be good!
