Well I think he was asking for feedback from events which are "outside the UK"? and not the opinion of folk from the UK...which is why I edited my response, however I might be wrong and misunderstood the question. Not that i'm picking on you Brett you're points are totally valid. furthermore, since you did post your response as you have, I feel confident enough to say what I initially intended...
Make a judgement based on demand, thats the main thing, or do something with an element of risk, but which is also a specific twist/take' on what you feel represents your idea of soul. if it doesn't work, then at least you've tried. The event, however big or small, has to represent you and your values thats the main thing, and with that in mind, people will hopefully appreciate it, because they'll see themselves as being part of something and feel part of something that they can invest their time into...if that makes sense.
Pick the right DJ's for you and the right policy, not just a blue=print belonging to other events, that what I'm trying to say - every good event is a little different. Hamburg for instance has those awesome boat trips and the chill-day session...
