  1. Thats what Adam did, Des. And i suspect he will again, with Adam Leaver doing the same. If you're keen and we do another one you're very welcome to play!
  2. Only the second time at DS - not a reg event, keeps it interesting then. Get down to it!
  3. Correct Greg - top night and more of the same, I hope!!
  4. And this gem, its only cheap but has a class organ groove - been playing it for a few years on and off.
  5. I can't remember what I played, but lots of variety on the shelves - a cross section below includes gospel, funk, R&B Marvin Gaye - You Joneses - S.O.U.L The Invincibles - Nobody The 5 Spiritual Tones - Bad Situation The Isley Bros - Don't give it away Loyce Cotton - Try it, You'll Like It Elliott Small - Stay in My Heart Sweet Bobby & Honey Boy - Watch The One Who's Talking and...
  6. Little pre-event teaser, £25 and under room is back at the Nags Head at the great Different Strokes night. DS lads giving it some welly in the front room, and the back room £25.00 take over challenge will feature... Adam Topping Adam Leaver Dave Abbott Nev Griffith Gary Bratchford Its a bit like a "Soul Funkton" on the cheap ...with me tagging along.
  7. I've got them both - exactly the same except the colour of the text. Black text is a second press, thought not necessarily a 'second issue' IMO. Its just another run with differing label colours (as far as i'm aware) Yes, its Teddy Pendergrass. but I can't see how it matters in this specific instance. Both worth the same, i'd say.
  8. The flip to the herbs is also class, I used to play it out.
  9. I think its more befitting to have a relatively low-profile voice narrate and program it - keeps it personal and is in keeping with much of the BBC's 'factual' programming. Celebs lending their voice to has started to dilute the message, i think, but just my opinion. Thats where all the fetishisation has came about and it detracts from the substance of the matter. E.g. that awful Sharleen Spiteri recording - firstly, she has a very boring delivery, and secondly, the underpinning tone was about 'her acquaintance' with the scene. Anyway, 6 music, which is pure class have got the balance right - recognised guests doing their picks, Jarvis C, Guy G, Iggpy P and then anything more affiliated with the common man e.g. a cultural movement tends to be done by the editors etc.
  10. Some of the most bleeding' obvious are the best - Nev played at a little gig I do in Manchester and he played Ediwn Starr - Time next to the Hamilton Movement. I can't remember much of the night, but I remember that sequence, and it was great. Same Noggin - I worked behind a bar for a friend when I was 17 (and was shitting it because I'd never worked behind a bar before) but I was told it was a nice crowd and the music isn't too bad. walked in and BANG! I'd heard a few comps before but this sounded like something else! I don't think I'd ever seen a record in action before, either...
  11. I've recently noticed a few call outs for some records which I'd have assumed EVERYONE already had. I'm going to take it as a positive sign that the scene is still growing (which of course it obviously is) but a bit of evidence always helps an argument! I'm using the term 'scene' in its widest sense as I know the Showstoppers, Shirley Ellis and Reggie Garner aren't the rarest records, but ppl are looking for them, which is interesting in and of itself. Either its new soulies at entry level, working mans club baggies scene or oldies returning and picking up the passion for vinyl - either way, all positive for the music as it continues to be listened to and shared. And of course for the record sellers too - finally they can shift some of that stock they've been lugging around for years!
  12. I was, in fact still am in the market for some and asked the same question - give or take a few variation of the brand you're using you can't go too far wrong. Well that was the general concusses you unless you spend BIG money.
  13. Did the Average White Band get a mention?
  14. What's a decent copy of this worth these days?
  15. Hi Des, I'll take Bill W - Harlem, please. Gary
  16. Is there an issue on an Orange label too - or am I colour blind?
  17. Hi Folks - last few tunes needed to finish off another label collection. Ideally, I don't want to go picking them off one at a time from Discogs, so if anyone has a few it'd be very much appreciated. All cheapies Charles Bradley - I'll Slip Away Charles Bradley - Everyday is Christmas The Budos Band - Kakal/Hidden Hand Sharon Jones - Tell Me (no silly prices on this please) Sharon Jones - Pick it Up Sharon Jones - What Have You Done Eddie & Ernie - Bullets Don't have eyes B/W YOU MAKE MY LIFE A SUNNY DAY (I have the other issues) Thanks Very much Gary

  19. Thanks Nev, Yeah it was a very good night - Another 1 in April, with much thanks to Steve too for taking the risk as it might have been a flop (though I know it wouldn't have been ) Wrote a little article too re its conception which underpins the content of this thread -https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-articles/£2500-and-under-the-challenge-r2929 It was done in London before I did it at D.S, as the link above points out, but D.S offers a space to do different things, which is nice but I'm also doing to do it for the European Soul Weekender with the European DJ's, which will be interesting (maybe a little session between the nighters)... more info to follow very soon.
  20. General Moan would be a good DJ alias
  21. pppftttt, thats just another Sunday afternoon
