  1. Well said Steve
  2. Keele! Of course, went to a nighter there - top notch. Never made it to Central Pier, or Blackburn. Venues listed above, and your comment kinda goes towards proving my point though.
  3. Been a lot of talk about the 80's being a low point on the northern scene and last week a comment of "during the eighties when the scene was on it's knees" was posted and I thought that was a bit OTT. I got into Northern 1982/83 and there seemed to be a fair choice of venues that were reasonably well attended. During the early/mid and late eighties we went to, 100 Club, Leighton Buzzard, St Ives, Peterborough, Loughborough, Leicester and Stafford amongst others. I appreciate although the eighties were by no means a high point of the scene's history compared with the seventies heyday or the early ninetees resurgence. However all the talk that northern soul all but died out during the eighties, is I think an inaccurate overstatement and is unfair on the promoters of the venues of that time. I'm sure there are other eighties venue's I have missed that we didn't go to. Not sure whether this 'eighties was dead' feeling is a general consensus, or were there folk that went out, danced and like me had a good time back then?
  4. Trip over to where exactly?
  5. Wouldn't know dude. Try wants or look at your box. Wouldn't hold your breath as it's a soul forum etc. Best bet to PM JTrouble, he's a bit of a funkster (so to speak) he was on line earlier.
  6. Funk is a bit crap. Some of the James Brown stuff is okay. Calling him the Godfather of soul though is bollocks. You do seem to get quoted and replied to quite a little bit Pete. (I'm not stalker #3 btw). Think it may have to do with your not backward in coming forward stance. Don't change it though for Christ's sake.
  7. If DG's era was the late sixties/early seventies, then he should be first on the list. It was time spent at the Twisted Wheel that prompted Dave Godin to write about 'Northern Soul' for the first time in Blues & Soul. Soul City's output born in mind and he doesn't warrant a mention even on the subs bench?
  8. Catchy term. Who came up with that again?
  9. A reshuffle and still no Dave Godin? Surely we don't need to say why! He ain't even on the fringe. No E in Ady BTW.
  10. More than a hint of sarcasm in that statement me thinks. Though, I'd put him in cos of Wigan. As previously stated Dave Godin too, he has to be in there.
  11. Don't know these dudes. I recommend taking them out (not literally) and replacing them with Pat Brady (legendary collector/dealer/DJ). Also Ady Croasdell for his discoveries and bringing rare soul to the masses through his associations with Kent/Ace. Oh and as promoter of the longest running all nighter ever.
  12. Say no more!
  13. Oh that is class Sharp today Mikey Still think wer'e off to Frebasing though.
  14. James Carr ? ? ?
  15. No shit! Will have to take this up with the daughter tonight. Bloke at work he is a supremo as is the daughter (I'm no slouch) they had done quizes for each other and that was one of the questions.
  16. Strewth! It ain't that much now
  17. Thought it was "you fold it you bought it". What do you reckon, to a Simpson's quiz in Freebasing?
  18. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - Nothing can compare to you. Yeah I'm serious!
  19. Slippin Around - Art Freeman Nb, How long till this gets moved to Freebasing?
  20. Capitol Soul Club was good in the early days, packed. Lots of dance floor drinkers - non soul fans along for a gawp and a pint. Scenesville was and is good, but suffers from lack a permanent venue. These Old Shoes was good, but isn't on anymore. So there's not a lot really. Heard mixed reports about the Dome - in Events from the last one, the feedback seemed pretty positive, though a text from a mate said otherwise.
  21. Whats that got to do with the mum's and dad's and allnighters thing dog?
  22. I'll come to Pikey in a moment. No, I understand this was just a curiosity after (and I can't recall who it was) someone said that NS fans don't necessarily come from a scootering background. Definitely not looking down on anyone - as stated at top of thread. Nothing wrong with being proud. If I met an NS fan who went to the wheel and everything since, I'd be well impressed.
  23. Nah, wouldn't fit timewise really would it.
  24. Somebody wrote recently that all northern soul fans came from a scootering background. Somebody else quickly corrected them. In truth I think it doesn't matter where you come from or what age you are if you like the music, that should be all that matters. However, someone out there must have a pure 100% Northern Soul pedigree. Eighteen Soul Source members registered in the 50+ category which means some of them could have made it to the Wheel and everything since. If perhaps they were born within say a fifty or so mile radius of Manchester (as a central northern city), and got into rare soul maybe from an elder brother/sister or word of mouth - (but not another scene). This sort of history would perhaps be a prime pedigree for a pure northern soul fan. Maybe younger northerner's missed the Wheel & Torch and started out at Wigan. Although not around from the start this would still be quite impressive. Not taking this too seriously and disappearing up one's own jacksy! But as a thirty nine (in August) year old Southerner, all I have to be proud of is twenty two years of faith and that's about it. Some are more northern than others. Does anyone care? Is anyone proud to have a solid northern history? Does anyone know if such an individual exists? Would be interested to know.
