If I recall the uba cool mods would not consider themselves as being classed as 'mods'. Their preference of tag (if any) was perhaps 'stylists'. Run of the mill mods were known as 'moddy boys'.
Also remember the transition (for some) from suits to army green's, flying jackets and monkey boots. This could be seen as simply a change in style or by osmosis a mod turning into a scooter boy. It depends on your point of view. Then there were 'psycho/scooter billies' with the mohicans, drinking pints of vomit etc.
Isle of Wight 1984 springs to mind for many of these types and a classic line from a scouse soulie there; “It's all fookin poonks”!
Lastly scooter skins were perhaps few and far between, but we had a mod mate from Harlow (Andy Ball) who decided one week to become a scooter skin. Removing all the chrome from his scooter, having his head shaved and dressing in denims with moccasins etc. This lasted for about a fortnight until I recall him uttering the immortal line “I'm no longer a scooter skin, I'm just a hard mod”!
Happy days ...
