Seems these 45's dated from 68/69 … when … WOKS was going strong .. check the #59 on their Top 60 … guessing, but it's unlikely the label lasted much more than a year.

A lot of sellers are putting 45 company sleeves up on Evilbay these days … I don't know how well they sell as I haven't watched many such sales ending.

A few more from 1967 … It was in 1967 that Local Government got involved in club regulation in a big way. Many clubs went 'members only' to escape some of the regs but others (the ones that didn't have drinks licenses) came under scrutiny for the 1st time. It was the councils and their elected members that (listening mainly to their older constituents, who were voters) forced the closure of great places such as the Mojo and Nite Owl. In Manchester, they would also get involved in the early 70's to close down the Wheel (end of January 71). I believe they had less of a hand in the demise of the London soul clubs, which were strongly effected by changing musical tastes … lots of pop / soul outfits that had filled their live shows with soul track covers moved on to feature psychedelic rock / blues rock stuff instead.

Bettye LaVette was a close friend of his thru life. She posted this message up on Facebook .. This man, Andre Williams, taught me SO much about songs, choosing them, singing them, the difference between cocaine and heroin, how to stay up late and talk all night long, and hold onto your thought, no matter how high you get. To get enough rest to do your show the next day, the most horrible jokes you ever heard, and how to maintain looking like a lady through all of that. I loved him so much. I have lost another of the planks in the bridge that I came across on. I'll try to keep the bridge going, but I'll always remember that HE and that bunch, taught me how to swim. RIP from LaVette - which is what he called me.

Philly studio supremo David White passed today, John Madara made the announcement. David worked with loads of the top soul artists; Bobby Wells, Johnny Caswell, Bunny Sigler, Sweet Three, Cindy Scott, Tymes, Chubby Checker … right thru to the likes of Fat Larry's Band. Another very sad loss.

Published back in March 67, this edition of the mag included interviews with some acts who'd recently toured the UK. I know back then, UK mag interviews followed a pretty standard format ………. where are you from, how'd you get together, why was "xxx" selected to be your new 45, what do you make of UK audiences, etc …. BUT … if anyone has an actual copy of the mag, I'd be interested to learn the facts highlighted in the Soul Sisters & Alvin Cash articles.

Not about soul music as such, but has strong connections ... … author Shaun Knapp will be launching his book, Mods: Two City Connection, at our Dungeon Club Reunion at The Newmarket on March 29th from 3pm -5pm. The book utilises first-hand accounts and photographs that tell the story of the sixties Mod scene in Nottingham and Leicester. It also forms the basis of the Mods: Shaping a Generation exhibition which takes place in Leicester in April, May and June.

Sceneman, the 100 Club was still mainly a jazz haunt back then. Their jazz music policy lasted well into 1967 …

Hasn't anyone (Rob Wigley. etc) ever chatted about these songs / the recordings with Melvin Davis ?? (+ the info on another song he wrote) ...

Some decent 70's (& later) soul / jazz funk / disco items coming, less 60's stuff (though still a few album goodies). I'll have to try to get a copy of Greg Belson's selection.

Some shows staged there in 62/63 … $1 admission before noon (or 50c for some shows), who'd pay that much ??
