  1. More good acts on locally .......... Jerry Williams had relocated to Miami by this time.
  2. Two fine singing ladies perform in the 'Knight Beat' room at the Sir John Hotel (with Chuck Jackson, Marv Johnson & Jerry Butler to follow shortly afterwards) ........
  3. James Brown (plus Nat Kendricks) back in Miami ... to cash in on the success of "Mashed Potatoes".
  4. An earlier visitor (though not down from Detroit this time).
  5. ....... and still more .........
  6. And yet another visitor from the Motor city.
  7. Another act down from Detroit to play a Miami club .... with singers from New York & Chicago to follow.
  8. Copy writers at newspapers had no idea (usually) who & what they were composing words / ads about. Because of this, spelling mistakes (& worse) were very common. This can make searching (on line) for info on someone more difficult & can fail to turn up all related items. Searching for "Spyder Turner" would have failed to unearth this ad.
  9. DJ Butterball in the WMBM studio.
  10. WMBM radio DJ King Coleman. He provided the vocals on the 45 "(Do the) Mashed Potatoes" by Nat Kendricks & the Swans.
  11. The Steinways 2nd Oliver 45 on a local radio station chart in 1966.
  12. A link to another page of the newspaper ....... https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00028321/00444/7j This dates from December 1966 and had ads for a couple of local shows (Eddie Lovett appearing on one of these). The more interesting photo is of the Vashionettes down from Chicago to dance at a local club. I guess this outfit has to be the same one that cut for Checker a while later.
  13. This thread probably shouldn't be in the 'Look At Your Box' section but it ties it in with the Twans thread. Here's a direct link to the web site & a page showing an ad for a show in 1964 by the Laddins. https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00028321/00157/9j The group (with personnel changes) became the Steinways. They were quite popular down in Miami and so were regular visitors. Coz of this they built up good contacts with local radio DJ's and this resulted in the Steinways 45's getting good radio airplay in the Miami area in 1966.
  14. Frank Williams & the Rocketeers (Little Beaver started out with this outfit). Most of these pictures are lifted from club ads placed in the newspaper, so the quality of them is much reduced from the acts PR / publicity photos.
  15. The Prolifics, who also cut as the Moovers ( for Deep City).
  16. And another (a picture of Helen Glover).
  17. Other items to be found in old editions of the Miami Times ....
  18. Loads of music fans have spent 100's of hours viewing old editions of Billboard mag online & downloading articles, record reviews, ads for new releases from down the years ........ well you can spend (waste?) additional time viewing old editions of the Miami Times newspaper online via the University of Florida web site. It takes patience to find soul related stuff but there is loads of it on there if you keep searching. Here's another ad for a show at the New Parisian Club (see Twans thread for earlier post of show here) ....
  19. BTW, the tale about the Twans being the Swans (of Nat Kendrick and the Swans fame) isn't correct in anyway. Nat Kendrick and the Swans were really James Brown & his band with lead vocal duties (shouts, etc) substituted by local Miami radio DJ King Coleman to prevent JB being sued by King Records. No actual band by the name of Nat Kendrick and the Swans existed though King Coleman did gigs fronting some musicians under that name (& further 45's were issued down in Florida under the same band name).
  20. Another club ad for the group. This time from October 1965 (so they were playing live locally for at least a 6 month period). I'll start another thread relating directly to accessing old editions of the Miami Times via the university web site.
  21. That picture of the Twans was taken from a club ad in the Miami Times that dates from 1966. You can access loads of old editions of the Miami Times via the University of Florida web site. WARNING .... its as addictive (& time consuming) trawling that site as the Billboard site is on Google books.
  22. Do you mean a picture of the actual group ?? If so ........
  23. The line-up of the Younghearts changed over time, on occasions because Bobby Sanders (their manager for some years) upset, fired & hired guys. Bobby set on a whole new group on occasions as the original group broke from his control, hence them being the New Younghearts / Kings of Hearts on some recordings. The Imperial Wonders from Cleveland were even hired by Bobby to become the group after Ron Preyer & his guys went their own way (Bobby telling the Imp.W that the original group had split up but that a new 45 was due out on them). But one night both groups were playing shows in clubs on the same street in LA, the Imperial Wonders went to meet the 'original group' and when told of their situation, the Imp. Wonder's quit as the Younghearts. Full details on the Imperial Wonders site .... https://www.imperialwonders.com/bio.html Ron Preyer's myspace page ... https://www.myspace.com/theyoungheartsfeatronpreyer
  24. He was on Jools Holland's BBC2 TV show a while back (guess clips from that might still be on youtube).
  25. The Skyliners were / are a blue eyed soul group led by Jimmy Beaumont & they came from Pittsburgh. They first hit the charts with "Since I Don't Have You" in 1959. The group continued recording through the early to mid 1960's, with Jimmy also cutting solo tracks between 1961 & 1966 (for May, Gallant & finally Bang). His last solo outing,"You Got Too Much Going For You", when released on London in the UK became a big mod sound. Jimmy was soon back with the Skyliners though but the group didn't land another record deal till the mid 70's. Then 45's on Capitol & Drive were followed by an album (& some 45's lifted from it) cut at United Sound in Detroit. These were produced by Don Davis (a big fan of the group back in the day) and issued on the Tortoise Int label. The group are still going (back in Pittsburgh) and perform oldies sets to this day. They first started doing 'Oldies Shows' in the US in 1971, so they've been getting 'oldies' gigs for over 40 years now. Jimmy Beaumont back in the day
