  1. Kegsy needs a full body (& head) transplant ... not just new glasses.

  3. Another jazz outfit who were on Segue Records was the highly rated recording outfit the Silhouettes. The Silhouettes group leader was George Bacasa & he put out the group’s 1st 45 on his own Bye George label. The core of the group was from the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA and it consisted of Bacasa (flute & sax), Ronnie Thomas (bass) and Al Secen (vibes). The Silhouettes eventually went on to record the "Red Snow" single on Western World Records and the LP 'Conversations with the Silhouettes' which was produced by Nathan Davis for Segue Records. They also had a 45 out on the label ................
  4. Another Segue LP ................ 6th Sense In The 11th House — Nathan Davis ..... Segue #1002 -- 1972 Recorded at WRS Recording Studios, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  5. Cardell Eaton (who was involved with the group's Cap City / Part III 45's) is on a US school related web site ............. Cardell Eaton -- 1966 graduate of Schenley High School in Pittsburgh, PA is on Memory Lane ........ https://www.classmates.com/people/Cardell-Eaton/8694715635 To register on the site (& then contact Cardell), it seems that you have to enter your US High School info (which not a lot of Brits can do !!!) .... it also seems that Cardell was involved in music education in the early 70's .......... Many budding DJ's took broadcasting courses at the Opportunities Industrialization Center in Pittsburgh. The center (OIC) was affiliated with WQLN-FM under the mentorship of Cardell "Soul" Eaton ...... WQLN .......... 6. There is ALSO a TJ Lubinsky related 'best-of past Motown' US PBS TV show being broadcast in America on 24th November at 9pm. This show has a new CD set tied in with it (to be released at the same time as the TV show goes out). Lots of publicity for Berry, his label & the upcoming musical due in the near future. Can't be bad.
  7. A Denise Wilson wrote one of their songs, guess she was a sister who wasn't actually in the group.
  8. No doubt Berry will be plugging the musical on this upcoming TV show ..... .... An Evening With Berry Gordy will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at The Art Institute of Chicago. This one-on-one interview, hosted by PBS-TV journalist Gwen Ifill, will follow Berry Gordy's journey through Motown and beyond. The evening will also feature performances by special guests in tribute to the music mogul. Tickets are $1000.00 each and RSVPs are required. Tickets must be purchased in advance and cannot be purchased at the door.
  9. More on Segue Records .............
  10. No doubt a few of the musicians who played on this album backed up the Lovations on some of their tracks ....
  11. And Pittsburgh is DEFINITELY back in the frame via this Billboard entry from September 1971 ...... So as Bob has confirmed, it seems that the Lovations were from Pittsburgh & a number of artists from that city cut locally and had their tracks released on Segue Records.
  12. One of the Lovations cuts was a song ("I Don't Want You") written by ....... Eugene A Todd & Leon A Barber This pairing usually have their work published by ............ EUBERTO MUSIC C/O B GIBSON 5047 D STREET S E WASHINGTON, DC 20019-6119 ....... so that makes them DC based ......... well maybe ... they also had songs published by .... HERB COHEN DBA HERCO MUSIC 2257 28TH ST NO 1 SANTA MONICA, CA 90405 ......... AND ....... RSVP MUSIC INC C/O JERRY SIMON P O BOX 278 WOODSTOCK, NY 12498-0278 ...............AND .... .REGENT MUSIC, NEW YORK ..... BUT ... t he above pair also wrote with Vinnie Barrett who wrote at times for Mighty Three Music of Philly. So you pays your money & takes your choice !!!! No mention of Pittsburgh in the above data though that guy who's comment I added into the post before last says he saw the group perform in Pittsburgh Hill District.
  13. Billboard 1969 ..............
  14. BUT were the group from DC or Philly ????????????// ............ OFF THE NET ............... Cardell Eaton / the Lovations.....names I haven't heard since I last performed in THE HILL DIST. 30 plus years ago. Although I don't remember this tune but it has that Pittsburgh sound. "They used to call the Hill District 'Little Harlem' because of the amount of jazz artists coming through there," said Nathan Davis ..... The Hill District is a collection of neighborhoods that is considered by many to be the cultural center of African-American life in Pittsburgh. Harlem Renaissance poet Claude McKay once called the district "the crossroads of the world," referring to the neighborhood's heyday in the 1930s—1950s. It is known to many Pittsburghers as simply "The Hill." pittsburghlive.com - Jan 17, 2008: "There's one by a group called 'Basic Sounds of Pittsburgh,'" Hopper says. "A group called the Lovations -- their 45 was produced by Nathan Davis over at Pittsburgh …….. Nathan Davis, director of jazz studies at the University of Piitsburgh .... Pittsburgh's jazz legacy shows up again on the new set of Jazz Icon DVDs, this time in a team many have forgotten. In 1965, Nathan Davis, the director of jazz studies at the University of Pittsburgh, was in Paris, carving out a saxophone life that still makes him famous in Europe. For a time, he sat in with Pittsburgh legend Art Blakey on a tour through the Continent. So along with all the other famous editions of the Jazz Messengers there was one of Blakey, Davis, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Jaki Byard and bassist Reggie Workman. This DVD, along with one featuring Pittsburgh's Erroll Garner, is yet another depiction of the city's jazz history from this series. This year's titles also feature works by Anita O'Day, Jimmy Smith, Coleman Hawkins, Art Farmer and Woody Herman. Since the series began in 2006, Pittsburgh jazz has taken a starring role, either with discs headlined by Blakey or featuring Joe Harris, Ray Brown or Kenny Clarke as backup players. The plot thickens .............. more later .....
  15. Next time I'm at a soul night, I'll try to ensure that I don't dance to any records that have lost some of their "myth" I don't want to be excommunicated by the ' Northern soul police'.
  16. Why restrict posts to just info on 45's .............. It may not have been politically correct, but quite a few US soul singers (Percy Sledge, C L Blast, etc.) went down to Sth Africa to perform in the 70's (at Sun City and similar venues). Some got involved with local musicians whilst there, the main one being C L Blast. He went into the recording studio with locals & laid down tracks that he supervised (producing & the like). He also cut a full LP of tracks there which was only released in SA ... this contains some decent tracks. In addition to his 'solo' album, a couple of tracks were lifted from it to go on a compilation V.A. LP .... one of the other tracks (by a local) also included on this VA album has a distinct US soul feel to it and I believe that this was due to input from CL. Other decent VA compilation albums were released around the world. Lots with 'unusual' tracks included on them (Sth American countries had their own popular US soul tracks) & so there are some nice items to be found on albums put out down there.
  17. And ... Pigmeat Markham also had to get in on the act in November 1968 ............ f
  18. Back to the jazzy guys .................. Gene Harris & his "(Sock It To Me) Harper Valley PTA" .................. Monk Higgins had a big hand in the cuts on this album.
  19. Who were the Deacons on Shama who also waded in (at the end of 1968) & made the US Soul 45 charts .............
  20. Joe Cuba had a go too ............. and in 1967, so did Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels ..............
  21. Steve, Little Joe Curtis did have a strange recording career. I don't have info on 45's released on him. I get the impression that guys who had copies of his tracks on master tape just sold them off for release by 3rd parties. Certainly very similar LP's that featured his stuff escaped in the US, UK, Europe & (I think) Australia. RE: "Bring Back My Love" / "Sock Me Your Love" -- this track escaped with both titles -- in the US it had the 1st title, outside the US (for some reason) it had the 2nd title ... plus on the US Somerset LP each track had the artist identified. On the non US versions, not all the tracks were attributed to an actual singer. ............ MOST STRANGE.
  22. US singer Little Joe Curtis cut "Sock Me Your Love", though I can't find what it's original label of release was (unless it was Somerset). Then there was Bill Moss & his "Sock It To Em Soul Brother" (Bell; 1969).
  23. The UK band the Senate backed up loads of visiting US soul singers (Garnett Mimms, Ben E King, etc). They also got to cut some tracks themselves, one of these (for United Artists) being a cover of "Sock It To Em, JB". Another UK album featured a 'Sockin' track too ..................
  24. "Sock Some Lovin To Me " ................... Blues Soul ............
  25. Nearly forgot the biggest 'Sock It To Me' hit .... Reffa's "Respect" that hit the charts in May 67 and went all the way to No.1 (though of course 'Sock It' isn't in the title).
