  1. Main hall Wigan, 2.00am every single Satuday without fail, waiting for Richard's opener, it never failed to get the blood racing. Just the best. I went for 21 consecutive Saturdays without missing one at one stage, i had a private competition with my best mates going on, who would be the first to miss one, it was me in the end, as I had to go on holiday with my mum & dad, was gutted, couldn't wait to get back. Every single moment was special in that place, wouldn't swap any of those memories. And to cap it, my dad would have a big fry up ready for me Sunday mornings every single week, off to bed, up at 4ish, check my purchases out, then down to my local youth club Sunday evenings to show them off to my mates on the turntable. About sums up my youth, great days. Aid
  2. Manship is flogging an acetate this week I see. What a truly great soul record, can't believe it never got a release in the U.S. Few questions about this. Would it have been one of these acetates that Dickie S was spinning at Wigan then as I presume his connections to RCA lead him to it? Was it originally recorded for RCA & does anyone know the whereabouts the original masters? Was just wondering. Aid.
  3. Soz Bri, wait for Elaine's film as it wasn't a good representation. Not being picky, but how come the toilet was totally silent? No muffled music in the back ground. Aid
  4. Recorded it & just watched as I was out last night. Wasn't great was it? What the heck was that dance off thing? Highlight was the dying fly, I'm gonna do that next time I'm at a soul night :-) Hope Elaine Constantines effort is better, I'm pretty sure it will be. Aid.
  5. Ah.... Got that wrong then. Don't know why I always thought blue eyed. Cheers ears Aid.
  6. Paul Anka's tunes at at Wigan. When we get there, Can't help lovin you, both pretty fly for a white guy! Dean Courtney Love you just can't walk away, good white ( I think) tunage. Worse white song I ever heard at a niter, Robbie Porter That's the way love goes, truly awful. Aid.
  7. I'm sure we could all list of rare records, but to make a top 500, they have to be killer soulful & not just the rarest. These are killer IMO. A few deffos for me, like I say maybe not the rarest but does it matter when this soulful. Volumes Aint Gonna Give You Up on Karen. Blendels Did You Mean Dontee. Frank Del He Broke You Game Wide Open Valise. Betty Boo Say It Isn't So .......don't think it got a u.s. release other than grapevine (could be wrong?) but what desirable soul record if it ever did & one of the best sounds I ever heard at Wigan. Oh, another just thought of, not that rare but Pat Powdrill Do It got to make any list. Aid.
  8. Great thread this. Leonard Chess documented the fact that he used bribery to get his record plugged. Although his time was much earlier, I'm sure it was still going on in the mid to late 60s too. Wouldn't be surprised to find out dj's were payed NOT to play certain releases by certain label rivals too. Aid
  9. Favorite Supremes track for me is My World Is Empty Without You. What a track. Aid.
  10. I tried to buy Richard Searlings copy at Wigan on the stage. I was too late, he had let it go the week before & he would have let me have for the wedge in my pocket had he known earlier, that was a low point in my life :-) Aid.
  11. And credit to Leeds, I was very worried at half time & Rhinos made a fist of it, missed Maguire badly I'd say, also, that try from Delaney knocked the stuffing out of em, had a great day, was in Harrow on Hill & caught up with lots of old friends. Aid.
  12. Hey Ali, hope the teardrops have been wiped away from Saturday? Did you go? We went, great day, never mind chuck, maybe anther grand final for you. Aid.
  13. Just caught it on iplayer, not being funny, but considering she was hit by a driver that didn't stop. Could have finished it off nicely with Rose Batiste. :-) Aid.
  14. Heres a few I'd have in that 500 list, just because I love em. Hyperions Why Do You Wanna Treat Me This Way. Chattahoochee Jimmy Gresham This Feeling I Have. Terri De Probably must include Del Larks, Magnetics, Al Williams too. Aid.
  15. Great Bank Holiday listening there Bob, really enjoyed. As posted above The Fred Johnson track really good. Liked the Enchantment track too, great production. Bet you don't get to play too many British soul artists like Real Thing bob? Aid.
  16. My fav LPs from top of my head.. Major Lance Greatest Hits. Glady Knight Pipe Dreams. Fillet of Soul Stax VA (including Showdown Rance Allen) From The Vaults Motown VA. Moving on in time & more generic soul. Grover Washington Jr Wine light (Be Mine Tonight standout track). George Benson In Flight (World Is A Ghetto is just sublime all 10 minutes or so) Anita Baker Rapture. Aid.
  17. Ops. Sorry bout that, just jumped online & posted, close this down then or move it if you would please chalks, not sure I know to how to kill my previous posts. Cheers ears Aid.
  18. Got back from pub at tea time, just watched a great programme about Britians heritage.....feet up, chillin out Sunday evening.......Dean bleeding Parish bangs out in my ears.....I'm On My Way........, I look up at the t.v. Can't believe it, BBC Cop drama about Nothern Soul, nearly choked on me pork scratchings. Blow me, what's all that about...... Aid. P.s it was called George Gentry
  19. Ahhh, didnt spot that, Columbo I aint! Hey mate, think I was talking to you at Lowton a while back, you bought a record off my mate Jeff Boardman from Warrington. Was that you? Could be wrong here. Aid
  20. Crickey Flynny, you got two copies there? I know your a big collector, but that just plain greedy mate :-) Aid.
  21. Ahhhh.....the soundtrack to my youth. Possibly the biggest sound (in my day) I ever heard at Wigan. Presume its blued eyed, not sure how soulful it is, but a great record all the same. Not seen too many of these about Mark. Good luck Aid.
  22. Great shots, I know I was their that night. Thanks for posting. Aid.
  23. We were sat in them downstairs watching some of the early shots (most people were upstairs watching from the gallery then), i told my mate that those three bottles of orange had been on that table for a while & that some of the production crew mustn't want them, as it was so hot & he was gaggin, he took a swig form one of the bottles...........they were props......., with pi*s tasting water in........absolutely cracked me up. Yeah, generally, think they got it spot on, & after some post production, sure it will be great, can't wait. Aid.
  24. I had a great day, really interesting watching the production team at work too. We were chatting to Brent & he was off to a gig Nuneaton niter that that evening so a long day for him I imagine, made me chuckle watching a bouncer shuffle during Sealing's set with his dickie bow on, but I think he was spot on for a Wigan bouncer. Lots of little touches I was impressed with as Carms says, the hair of the actors, & it was generally longer then & the attitude was right on the money. Also the dj smoking & in generally the smoke filled air. Not sure about when dj said 'take no prisoners', don't think that type of dialogue would have been used & me personally would drop that. Another point, the stage was always three rows deep with bags/cassette recorders/coats it was empty. The balcony was deffo wrong, but not much can you do given what it there. The dancers were fantastic, I think they have a hell of a lot right & besides my picky comments I think its gonna be spot on & am excited about seeing it. Don't want to hear Duke Browner for a while though. Did anyone else notice the guy from Ocean Colour Scene? I'm sure it was him, but I could be wrong, he was just there as a northern fan like the rest of us I presume. Aid.
