  1. This was the biggest sound I ever heard at Wigan. Absolute stunner, still sounds great & soulful today. You can't please all the people....... Aid.
  2. There was tons at later Wigan in my day (I'll temper that with, there was tons of brilliant stuff too.) Lost Summer Love is a cringer IMO, but I can't tell you how big it was, absolutely massive. Russ Winstanley was guilty of selling his soul & should bare the brunt for all this crap stuff, no other djs were doing this at the time, to my memory & once he was off the decks things usually improved. Although, you had no chance at an early session on a Friday, cos he was on all night, that was torture, but at least the bar was open!!. He was always plugging any old crap with a view to getting it pressed up by his supplier Simon S & they could make some wonga. Aid.
  3. I'm not that familiar with test pressing values & I think it might be a very tricky & you could easily get burned if, like me, you are not that well up on values. But I had me eye on this EPTONES, A LOVE THATS REAL, a great Gamble & Huff track. Thought this went very cheaply & someone got a bargain. The seller is quoting the label number Jox070-1 so I'm presuming it's from the original & not some bootleg cut?? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310513709090?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Aid.
  4. Eh up Bahar! Yeah, I noted my mistake in an above post but my point still stands non the less. I know I can count on you for a correction though pal. I'll see thee at next Lowton? Aid.
  5. True enough mate, happy days though. Take care Aid.
  6. Brilliant, happy days, remember Spot Watman & Lappo on the doors? And Maxine behind the bar?? I was in there one Walking Day & it kicked off, it was like the wild west, really really much worse than anything I'd ever seen at a footie match, total mayhem! Nothing to do with the soul night, this was a 'normal' day. Aid.
  7. Great days Barry, especially when I think of the nights with Brian Rae, he would spin anything for us, used to get a lift home with him & mither him to death every week about records, he lived right by me near Penketh. Remember The Three Degree performing live, spoke to Shelia Ferguson that night, I was starstruck. Aid.
  8. Yeah, of course, I do get your gist Gordon. I understand what you say & actually agree and do feel the same about a lot of the music. I don't like a lot of those pop tracks too, coupled with the fact that tastes change. But suppose my real point was that, it is was what it was & we can't change that now, doesn't mean we can't move on & be progressive, not in mine (& most of my friends cases) anyways. Aid.
  9. That's what I'm sayin (or trying rather badly too)....... Aid.
  10. Just love this track, one of my favourite female vocal tracks at the moment (along with Celeste Hardie's You're Gone) also like the Motor City Sound instrumental of this too. Aid.
  11. I should qualify my last post...not most of it, but a large % and more than I would have expected. Aid.
  12. Doh............ahh, okay, but you get the point? His set was full of blue eyed artists & most of it was 'classic' Northern Soul. Aid.
  13. Technically, you are right Gordon, but I disagree, might not be soul... per say, but CHYL is Northern IMO, you can't re-write history & it was big & better than the ranks of some of 'pop' that was being banded about at that time, same goes for 'When We Get There' IMO. And are you going apply that argument to tons of blue eyed stuff, I could give a list longer than the Magna Carta you could apply that too & say it's not soul? To name a record that got me into soul when I was a kid, Night Owl, Bobby Paris.....is that not northern then? Caught a John Manship guest spot last year, couldn't believe the amount of Blue Eyed white stuff.....Tony Middleton, Rufus Lumley..I was very surprised with his set, but my point is, its all Northern. Don't want to argue with you Gordon, but do dissagree with your post. Aid.
  14. It seems rumours of his death were greatly exaggerated. Lets hope he pulls through. Aid.
  15. Hey Barry, The big 'C' in the sky. Know it well, spent many an evening up there, big bad Brian Rae spinning the discs. Good soul/funk nights too, Mike Shaft in the 80's too I seem to remember. But other than soul nights, what a den of inequity on the weekend. Wonder where Derek the owner is these days? Aid.
  16. Wow, I'm surprised it's pre-Wigan, didn't know that, was a very regular spin at the Casino, was When We Get There a pre Casino too? Two great soul tunes, pretty fly for a white guy! . Aid.
  17. Few nice versions of Burt Bacharach's Any Day Now, but Chuck Jacksons is unbeatable IMO, think Elvis even had ago. Aid
  18. i think Soft Cells version of........................Nah...........no way man, only joking. Aid.
  19. I like that Frank Pop Ensemble effort of You've Been Gone Too Long, not saying it's better, it's just I haven't heard it a zillion times since I was the age of 12, like Ann Sexton's, so it sounds fresh & poppy, I like it. Aid.
  20. My first real experience of 'disco' was at the Ritz Alldayers in the 70's with Levine & Co. Donna Summer's I Feel Love blew me away the very first time I heard it, lots of great stuff like Brainstorm, Idris Mohammed, Micheal Zagar Band, really opened my eyes at the time. I'm sure this stuff was reflecting what was happening in New York at that time & was ahead of the game relatively speaking. But, like anything, once it went mainstream & with that commercialised, was a real turn off for me (mostly). A few generations later, got back into 'club' music with the likes of afrika bambaataa, D Train, Frankie Knuckles and the whole Chicago House thing a bit later, but I suppose thats another story. Aid.
  21. My favourite track at the moment. Fabulous Apollos, The One Alone, I could cry when I hear this, its just sooooo good.. Aid.
  22. Interesting that Rich. Jesus, I know its OT, but I've only just realised Virgin Henry is a man, always sounded like Gladys Knight-ish on You Ain't Saying Nothing New & penny just dropped when playing I'll Be True. doh...... we live & learn. Aid.
  23. Ahh, cheers Dave........must pay more attention, my teachers were right Aid.
  24. Two great sides, but exactly what does 'Johnny On The Spot' mean? I wonder every time I hear it but forget to ask. Aid.
  25. Bob Beamon's has lasted since 1968 Aid.
