  1. Seem to remember The Ellington's pressing having the wrong title 'Destined To Be A Loser' in stead of 'Destined To Become A Loser'. Awful record. Aid.
  2. What a superb soul record. When and where was this first played? Aid. Edit: Also I see it's a B side, who was the first to play it?
  3. Me like it. I was too young at the time he performed at the Casino, wasn't going until a few years later, my brother always said it was fabulous though. Didn't you just love the way that spark label looked whizzing round on a turntable..... hypnotic. Food for thought. Aid.
  4. Soundtrack to my youth this one, along with Johnny Bragg, first records I ever danced to (publicly), Co-op hall & Bell Hall Warrington. Ahhh, I was a mere pup, but the music still resonates as strongly as ever, like certain smells from certain places, it never goes away. Aid.
  5. I liked the way they began giving cover up artists ridiculously stupid or private joke names. Cant think of any examples, but i remember reading playlists in 'fanzines' or whatever you call them (un-official magazines) & literally laughing at the so called artists names. Did i dream that? Aid.
  6. Yeah, Christine Cooper is the original, so there! :-) Aid.
  7. The up & coming soul film uses this, also along with Duke Browner, these standard oldies could be more demand in the next couple of years. If I had a mint Velgo or Impact, I'd hang on to it for the near future at least....til the film comes out at least, then I'd flog em. Aid.
  8. PP ARNOLD EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT. PAULA PARFIT, LOVE IS WONDERFUL. SAMATHA JONES, SURROUNDED BY A RAY OF SUNSHINE. Aid.
  9. Here's a U.K soul record don't think you see around too much. A BAND OF ANGELS, INVITATION. on Piccadilly Records. Wierd this, got all the production values of a great Detroit record, yet it's crossed with a Merseybeat sound. Can't weigh it up really, not bad though.....I think. Aid.
  10. I'll have a red issue Larry Clinton please. Aid.
  11. Correct as usual Pete, it's was persevered with & was around for a good while that one. Aid.
  12. At the end of the day, you have to put things into perspective & The Casino went stratospheric, although, yeah still a sub-culture, it was virtually mainstream, in a way like no other soul venue has ever been or ever will be in future, nothing today could get anywhere near touching it for popularity and interest, a couple of thousand people EVERY single Saturday night and a Friday night once a month too. So, inevitably this brought a whole new way of thinking & things changed rapidly, records would be broke, be popular, get pressed, and fade away within months, the turnover of new tunes was immense and new people were coming onto the scene on a weekly basis too. Also, you had bandits like Simon S, sponsoring some of the dj's for their own promotional ends thens it's no wonder some of pop broke though. I'm might get slated for saying this this is my opinion, but, you did actually have what you might coin 'lads' tunes & 'girls's tunes, and in my opinion some of the more poppy 'girls' were responsible for a lot of the pop, not saying all, but just a higher percentage at that time & there was a massive influx a 'girls' jumping on the bandwagon & onto the scene at that time that were obviously being catered for, or targeted. (I'm thinking Muriel Grey & Lorraine Silver). But that was the way it was, and the choice of sounds was so varied, there was something for everyone & it was just a case of 'well I hate that' but something good was always two minutes away. All that said, the venue sported most of the best quality sounds ever introduced to the scene too & shouldn't be lampooned solely for that pop period exclusively. Aid.
  13. Although I'd like it in the old days at Wigan, when you could clammer to the dance for when Dickie would spin the then c/u titles of Joe Mathews/Christine Cooper/Del Capreez (no prizes for real names) 3 or sometimes 4 times a night, but that was the only place on the planet they could be heard, (& had never been heard anywhere else before) so that's different & that was how they were broke and caught on very quickly. But IMO (for what it's worth) nothing should be played twice at an event these days by design or mistake. Aid.
  14. Agree Pete, and the M1 flying jacket that lad has on (you know, green with orange lining). deffo post 80 those. Love the empty coke bottle, sometimes forget there was no alcohol, never batted an eyelid about that in those days, don't think I could go two hours without a grog at a soul night these days. Aid.
  15. I'm with you on that, still only one make of jeans to this day, Levi, all other brands are just inferior. Aid.
  16. Motown Story Box Set. (Love the bit where the narrator says...... 'Stevie Wonder.....now a man) makes me laugh to this day that. Viva Roxy Music. Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd. Solid Air, John Martyn. Stevie Wonder, Innervisions. Supremes Greatest Hits (the one with the three red lips) Aid.
  17. Don't know about the values Pete, (& I'm no good at values in any case). But two great great records there. Absolutely love em both & would never tire of them. Aid.
  18. I always actually think it's Elvis singing that song. Me no like, although I do remember it's was massive once, probably because Black Riker was readily available & people could keep up with it. Aid.
  19. Not bad I'd rather listen to Danny Baker talking football though, in this show he just strikes me a a middle aged old sod indulging himself, he certainly has no musical knowledge to offer me about any genre so to hear talking about 'Marvin' or 'Smokey' with such gusto, makes me want to vomit. Trevor Nelson is a balloon, who's condescending film about Northern Soul shall forever make me loathe him. Mica Paris, a great vocalist & singer, but it was obvioius she's not really 'with it'. Martin Freeman came across as okay, he's just about passed & that was probably because I liked his shirt. But can't be doing with lectures about 'great' music from (white celebrity) people, who IMO, are detached & narcissistic and generally they all fall into that category. I'd rather listen to a drunken stranger's opinion in a pub than they self righteous sods, or of course, any other soul sourcers. Sky Arts have some good music (all genres) programmes, beats the bumbling BBC, (who ditched this genre of youth/style cultural audit shows years ago to chase ratings). I suppose the penny dropped, needs must & they don't cost any money to make) Other than that, it was okay & that's my critique. Aid.
  20. I have thought exactly the same Pete, imagine an instant price guide or instant label info etc, would be superb. Aid.
  21. That really surprises me Pete, sometimes I suppose you just don't take notice of certain tracks I suppose. I'd didn't know Bobby Sheen until just a few years ago, but's that's because I was off the scene for a long time after Wigan and missed a heck of a lot, still catching up all the time. Aid.
  22. For me this record has it all, Wingate & Kent, say no more. Aid.
  23. I'd have thought Fantastic Four Can't Stop Looking For My Baby one of the rarer Ric-Tics demo's? Certainly one of my all time fav's on that old label, what a choon. Aid.
  24. Hey Barry, How was Saturday night mate? Think we will get Brian Rae's set posted in playlists? Wouldn't mind a gander at that mate. They actually had Punk early sessions at Wigan for a bit. Aid.
