  1. There are still a few nights that survive, but they are run by what I class to be proper modern soul fans who are pioneering new music with a soulful vibe. Champions include people like Mark R, Fish, Andy Jackson, Roger, Colin C, and a few others. Sadly for much of the time they tend to get drowned out by those that prefer to put on a modern room featuring "something we all know" all night. In a way you are right Len, I still want to hear new music and the number of places where you can is limited.......Oh another parallel with the n. scene!
  2. But a mash up of this exact same record was done six or seven years ago now......I remember buying it on a white label 7 in Worcester at The Soulful Sessions. Years ago.
  3. I reckon we often forget that there is a world beyond our pharocial little niche .....We think we are the only people that like soul music. There must be at least 30 different sub-scenes and genres in London alone. Before we even look elsewheres.
  4. Was it Frederick Hymes, I thought it was the other version?....need to wash my ears out!!!
  5. I know we've done this before but.....in many places it went the same way as the northern scene. Dominated by "rooms" at weekenders where a largely intoxicated "on site" audience just wanted to hear things they were familiar with and could shuffle around and sing along to. Very different from jumping in a car and going off 50-100 miles to a night to hear something new and refreshing and getting a buzz out of it. Sorry I know that's controversial....but! The only thing that's really had a negative impact on the modern scene is the lack of err.....plays for modern soul!
  6. I got totally bored with the remake / re-edits thing a while back. I taker Ian's point about them not being done for the soul scene, but at the end of the day modern DJs oon the soul scene should be looking for something new and fresh to play....otherwise it's just yet another retro scene of ageing hippies and Mons and Dads.
  7. A good list so far, but it's not over yet....... and I guess you just can predict I'll come in with a Scepter cover. Bobby Boyd & The Playboys "Higher & higher" at the beginning of 1969. White R&B cover by the guy that became a country artist.
  8. "Time ain't gonna do me no favours" then the Hill Sisters - great stuff!
  9. Does that include mine Dave?
  10. Does anyone have a copy of this book(s) please? I don't want to buy it but have an enquiry. PM please. Ta.
  11. Dutch? For the Polynesians then. I know about the US market....but thanks for the reminder on the reason records were made
  12. Who bootlegged it and for what market?
  13. Suspicious Can Openers - what a fantastic name!
  14. Peterborough Soul Club 1982....my first Niter "residency" as a northern DJ
  15. yes John quite widely reported at the time. She was actually struck coming out of the Theatre post show so that report is not quite right. She had to go to hospital with cuts and bruises after being hit by one of the "silent killers". She was soon back in action though and only missed one or two dates on her tour which took in everywhere from east Ham and Eastbourne to Tunbridge Wells and of course Glasgow.....
  16. 50762 and 50763 according to my master list. Perhaps there are two versions?
  17. So the five digit numbers should be the same, as that was Scepters numbering system for their masters. You sure you not looking at their other record? They did two sessions for them two Wand singles....
  18. I hope everyone has checked out your Greenville Ms.soul page - some excellent research there Kris!
  19. Still not finding Candy & Kisses and Diane and Anita EP's - oh well.....
  20. Oh, another song from the talents that were Ken Williams- J R Bailey and Rudy Clark......
  21. Perhaps a few of us should start asking questions again like we did once before "is this the 1st issue Grapevine label?", "Will you supply a centre with the record as my turntable doesn't have one", "Is that a vinyl Carver or some other form of re-press - please clarify" etc. etc. Could be some good "sport" to be had.
  22. Love Stormy Weather another £3 Domar special.....
  23. I wouldn't refund them. Crooks plain and simple.
  24. It's a good thing Peter it's a top weekender.....
  25. It's one of the reasons I don't do too many "local soul nights"/////All the DJs had names like "Budge", "Fudge", "Mudge and "Studge" and I couldn't tell one from the other
