undoubtedly true but how does the bored banker get DJ spots if he's not part and parcel of the scene? And as far as I know none of the DJs at the 50 or so "nights" every saturday are bored bankers - most are ordinary folk with some records as far as I can see - a few lottery winners and a few spending their inheritance too. Putting aside the elite group of recognised "top names", for the rest of us it's all about "who you know" - if you have a venue you are much more likely to get regular work, because other promotors hope you'll book them in return, and so it goes on....mutual back scracthing gone mad. On the collectibility of records, I remember Sam telling me how he got "Cheatin Kind" from Levine for £3 and then later traded it with Searling for Larry Houston...... so you are right about the knowledge thing, there were "top sounds" and the DJs for the most part had little appreciation of rarity. It was all about getting the big sounds. That's mostly gone now. And these "top sounds" in the 70's usually turned up more often than not, so that most of the top DJs had them.....One gets it and then suddenly half a dozen have it within a few weeks..... It was a right rum business!

Believe me in the 70's and 80's there was more good stuff coming into the country every week than you'll see in a year on ebay.

Yeah but there's a difference between Kenny and his Frank Wilson and the "pack" of "Top DJ's" all falling over themselves to play Del Larks, Eddie Parker, Salvadors, Mel Britt etc. week in week out. And then the third division (north) brigade with their Paul (W)Anka's, Holly St Jameses and Ruby Andrews "Just boring you"..... I was on the bill with Kenny a few years ago in italy. An upfront venue where frankly you could genuinely play across the board, no requests for oldies etc. no "Wigan handbaggers" within 1,000 miles. Well Kenny played his Frank wilson, and the reaction was amazing - there were people on the stage watching it go round, taking photos of it etc etc....caused a real stir!

I'll give you a different view. In the 70's it was EASY to find new records. A trip to Soul Bowl with enough money and you were off and running. The DJs then were falling over records, and if you check the stories of people like Levine and Curtis sifting through the latest records to arrive on a Friday to agree what they would play Saturday.....it must have been easy compared to today. Spoilt for choice, all the DJ needed was money and a willing promotor. Can't even say they were good on the mic or putting a set together neccesarily, some were, some weren't. Much harder to find new records today or try and carve out a different style from the masses.....

Nothing is gonna change fellas.....Some of the Limpets will get bored and drift away, but that's about it. It's a bit like TV ownership, nearly everyone has one - same with NS nearly everyone is a DJ now, it won't change.

Answer is none of us know and it's all speculation including the fact that the person pressing it "obviously knew the Tyrone Davis label" (I guess you mean Carl Davis). There is no evidence to suggest that permission was or wasn't given.....we don't know (yet). To give you a bit of historical perspective on the mid 80's....there was an upfront and vibrant scene (Stafford, 100 Club etc.) but I can also tell you there was a massive "oldies only" scene too. The scene was divided then as well, as anyone playing 60's newies or modern at the time will tell you. I was a resident at both The Fleet and The Wirrina in Peterborough for example and can remember now the repeated requests for "Right track" and "Night owl"....and the disappointed faces when I wouldn't play them. The only differences with today are there are fewer punters to go round, more DJ's / venues, and more people content to just have a social night out as long as there is a background of some "familiar" music. A lot of the passion has gone .

Dakar was still operating in 1974, but if a connection I am convinced that it would have had all the Brunswick insignia somewhere on it, this has none of it. As Dakar was a capital of an African country (Senegal) quite possible that it's usage as a name was more widespread than we might think.....Interesting though.

Why do people think that rules that (should) apply to NS and Rare soul, also apply to the modern scene? Format isn't important in modern rooms if you don't believe me look at all the top names who carry their collections around on CD-R. Completely different scene, no hang ups about vinyl..... That being said I can remember doing a "modern night" where there were no CD players "because they cost £50 to rent" I was told.......furious I was since I'd just spent more than that on a load of brand new CD's to play. and couldn't play them.

Hi Pete, the comment wasn't aimed at any particular DJ (I happen to know and get on with the one you are probably thinking about), but you'll hear that fookin' record in 50 venues every week. It's a bad record, there's thousands of better ones, tens of thousands in fact. That's where the divs are, not some curious people that come along and try the scene out and see what all the fuss is about. These days i put as much distance as I can between the "Teddy boy retro scene" with all its commercialism and cliches, and myself, but still enjoy the best of the music.

The clip the BBC have up is of the Wigan young souls. I am cool with that, youngsters into it and doing their own thing is fine by me.....Only let down was that godawful Holly St James playing in the background.....Only one notch up from Paul Anka in the crapola list of shame

Amazing how many people list the label as Sump Off as well.....A bit of NS history first played by Curtis at The Mecca.....Although I didn't hear it then, it's a record I have liked for a long time.

OMG you are serious, I thought you were just posting all this to wind people up.... Well young man you couldn't be further from the truth. I'll watch the programme next week, I doubt that it, or the film will bring in a new wave of "divs" onto the scene. Anyway there's enough of them already on the scene

At least we won't forget when the programme is on..... And here's another cliche to look out for: "We all drifted away, got married and had our families after Wigan closed, and now we're back!!!

Reg the hand is at the prospect of another retro scene piece with middle aged baldies harping on about Wigan.....Let's hope there's more to it than that....
