  1. Good points there Dave, and there is no money in traditional radio stations anymore (if there ever was)……sorry to say. Apart from the BBC which is taxpayer funded they're all struggling to stay above the waterline. Sonos, Soundcloud, Mixcloud hasn't helped either……on the one hand DJs can post shows up, but on the other greater choice means fewer listeners to go round the main stations. You can probably find 500 shows playing "Mustang Sally" so increasingly mainstream stations are going to have to offer something a bit different to attract listeners. Maybe a guy that can beat out percussion by bashing a 12" single over his head in time to the music? Despite all this Tony Blackburn still seems to be very popular judging by the number of callers he gets with his cheesy mixes and one liners. Sky channel is also an expensive route to go if they haven't done it before. Happy new year to you both!
  2. Yep Dave would be great to see you. Steve
  3. Ha, originally liked Jimmy Reed Jr best, then I got into Leroy Barbour when it was still under the radar, but now for mid tempo afternoon crossover you simply can't beat Jimmy Reed Jr…so they are both good.
  4. Yes that would be good - and this one was a packer too……
  5. Could be one of the other Shirelles on lead, haven't checked yet…..but the more I hear it the more I hear Stan Greenberg conducting The Discotays. So 99.9% sure it's NY. When was the Maxine version recorded - 65?

  7. Valerie often sang em herself and changed her voice to try and sound like the singer she had it aimed at. At Scepter they also worked with The Shirelles of course although I haven't done an analysis of that.
  8. Much as it pains me to say it, it sounds like a New York recording with that manic percussion and trumpet - I'd say it's almost certainly the Discotays on accompaniment - so a Scepter in house production. As to the vocalist not sure yet…..
  9. They did Triode…..
  10. God, when Motown put that single out at a big promotional event there were copies left lying on the floor, people were given it but didn't want it cos it was a record……amazing now when you think about it…..
  11. Yep good point Steve. Same with Tommy Hunt when he appeared there. At the time I did a cartoon strip of it which I sent to friends who I knew would be as horrified as I was…..Basically had Tommy Hunt on stage in a pair of Spencer bags singing "loving on the losing side" and these skinheads with bull necks going "Oi Oi Oi" and one asks "ear what's this black geyser doing on the stage?", "We ain't coming here again…." "Oi Oi Oi" That kind of thing….I probably still have it somewhere. There was only ever going to be room for one NS promotor in Peterborough back in the 80s…..Also remember doing a soul night in Stamford. Anyway these Peterboro lads turn up mid evening, kick some tables over and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Young DJ called Russ comes out of the toilets with blood everywhere - basically he'd been head butted bang on the nose, broke it wide open. Anyway it was turning nasty and a few of us were up for giving them a kicking, but before the posse got organised and anything happened the Peterborough lads left pronto……but we found out later they'd also done a number of cars in the car park too. At the time we couldn't believe this sort of thing going on at a soul do.
  12. The Wirrina promotions at the time were being done by a guy from Stoke - Chris Burton I think his name was (?) blonde haired fella with an old car…..anyway whoever it was those nights were packed to the rafters…..one room event too with everything under the sun being played.
  13. At the end of the day there are "trophy records" which a lot of people are scrabbling over, and then everything else….some stuff went very cheap.
  14. Merry Christmas all!
  15. Hi Wayne, It's on my mixcloud page Page 5 https://www.mixcloud.com/steve-guarnori/emmanuel-lasky-interview-soul-24-7-radio-show-2000/ Cherry Missmas to you and the Salster! BTW - think it was the first radio interview I ever did.....
  16. That's cos it's you Len.....you are now a "star" DJ and people will dance to yer sets.....whateva ya play. Anyway Merry Xmas.
  17. Can't we agree it's just a pretty good tune from the late Dennis Talley and great that he kept recycling it. Will try and find my pics of 4th Day, Emmanuel in the 70s etc. But that reminds me....when I interviewed Mr Laskey in 1999 on Soul 24-7 radio he was living in a project in abject poverty, he claimed he'd been ripped off of all his records etc. And a singer who gave so many so much pleasure with his singing.
  18. Interesting we are certainly seeing some youngsters down in London, which is great. Enthusiastic and no "I went to Wigan Casino" or angry "Play something we know" baggage.... ....But dear old Ruby andrews ffs - been hammered by just about every soul night DJ in the land for over 20 years......so that's hundreds and hundresds of 'em. It needs extracting from all of their playboxes / hotboxes etc. and banishing to the top shelf for at least another 20 years.....another example of a lazy DJs record.
  19. Yep these things take time....Keep plugging away!
  20. Not rare they're about Jim……might have to pay £40-50 or so.
  21. It's coming out to play next Friday…….kickass northern…..
  22. Yes 75-76 fits in with the other Magic Touch releases in the 3000 series...
  23. Paid about £50 for mine back in the 90s…..good record!
  24. Hi Dave yep would be great to see you and T.
  25. Hi Jordi, it doesn't stop her coming up , and as she's my girlfriend she is the one person I can't be rude to. But you are right a tremendous dancer -I need to "man up" - gonna play it next Friday at Filthy Soul and to hell with the consequences.
