  1. The Clock Stoppers is one of those known obscurities that has turned out to be pretty rare. Picked mine up in the early 90s for £40 from Gavin. I think he had been giving it a few plays at dos around Bedfordshire and I liked it as a version, so when it appeared in his sales box I snapped it up. It does look like a Chicago release, although I cannot say 100% for sure.
  2. I was gone up north (well Peterborough) by mid 82. Kim, Kev and I put on the first northern nights in West Kent and we certainly did not play chart records. Wouldn't have dreamt of it, the whole point of being on the NS scene (as it was) was to get as far away as possible from commercial chart music.
  3. Funny old world Russ. I was in that part of the world until 1982, I can assure you that Kev, Kim and myself never played "RLSD" at any of our events. So it must have been after then.
  4. "Scene" what "scene"? Seems to me there are at least 25 distinct "scenes" these days. Each has their own "DJs" and people that will attend their events, but not go to "another scene" event down the road. Totally fragmented so talk of a "scene" is meaningless.
  5. Seems it is a "big record", heard it at a do down here much to my absolute horror!
  6. You think that hasn't been done for the last half century Ian?
  7. It wasn't withdrawn. Low press run (300 I believe) and what copies sent out were sent to activists etc. A few may have gone to "friendly" radio stations. My copy came from a former black political campaigner. The single version on Turbo is both shorter and has a different intro to all of the reissues on CD and vinyl, so at least two versions / tapes must have been made.
  8. Yep they found the widow (I think) and all the Prix titles were still in the garage in quantity. I got all my Prix stuff off of those guys. Before that it was very rare and a late Wigan spin for RS as others have said.
  9. Patrick was a member of the Sparks. 1967.
  10. I don't normally comment on auction prices, since it is up to the individual what they pay for a record they want. But, as a collector I'd prefer not to split up the Rafael Saadiq box set as it is a unique item. As for Sy Hightower, seems to have sold for a lot less than the seller paid for it last time it was auctioned. The fact that Time Yuro, of which there are hundreds of copies sells for more than a rarity like that shows just how "confused" the market is right now.
  11. Marissa's brother (who worked at SB in the 70s) told me that anything they had more than 25 copies of that wasn't a northern in demander went in the soul packs. 25 copies was the threshold. Some of those records turned out to be pretty scarce, so yes agree great value. But John's argument was that no one wanted them (as individual items) back then.
  12. I must admit that I read it that it was a 1976 release not that Sam played it in 1976.
  13. Sam got Fluorescent Smogg in the mid 80s, 84 or 85 I think. To all intents and purposes that is when it first appeared. It is a testament to the man's taste. I happened to be in KL with him when he got it (he used to pick me up in Peterborough). It was either £5 or £10 I cannot remember which now. But, it was in his pile, he played it and I thought WTF that's a bit off, I was really surprised that he bought it as it didn't sound like the type of sound that was going down at the time. Soon after he played it at Rock City and the rest is, as they say, history.
  14. Is there a particular record you are thinking about Chalky?
  15. For gifts [sent from abroad to the Netherlands, ie, an EU member state]: ‘you do not have to pay VAT for gifts with a value of up to €45. Please note: this only applies if the parcel is from a private sender.’ Gifts is the 2nd word. The exemption applies to certain gifts if under E45 and is from a private sender. There are no gifts on eBay, it is a buying and selling marketplace much as we may like there to be.
  16. By definition if you are buying something from eBay it is not a gift. So whether the sender is a private individual or a business is irrelevant.
  17. This has been the case for about a year now. Discogs is the same. Tax collected at point of sale which they have done in the USA with sales tax for some years. Steve
  18. Interesting. The old railway station would have been great for access. Just cross the road.
  19. Paul, the original photo you posted came from John Anderson and appeared in Blackbeat.
  20. Sam buys sells and trades with many people. He is very tenacious when it comes to dealers and sellers in the U.K. (not so "the internet" as he will be the first to admit). That said, not surprising he is offloading this, someone must have had a word. On the wider question if a buyer wants to buy a record that is c/u that is their business, but as others have said it is always a case of "buyer beware".
  21. Cap City IS the first label for The Lovations, Part III came later. The Lovations were 100% from Pittsburgh and at the time of their recordings were Crystal & Penny Wilson and Sherry Henderson. Crystal's daughter incidentally was the singer Shanice. Steve

  23. No way did the BBC get Darrell Banks London issues. The story is that they didn't leave the factory....except for one known copy which someone who worked there apparently took.
  24. Funnily enough my Dave Charles came from Pat c 1991-2.
