I always thought this was a Shrine recording (albeit not issued until after the label closed).

The Nu-Ron's - All My Life / I'm A Loner - Mixed by Tom Moulton
Steve G commented on Brewerytownbeats's article in News Archives
Good grief! That is absurd Glyn. -
What is "kunts with drink"?. I have seen drunk people but you see them in all walks of life and not many at NS nights. So now you can't be disabled on the dance floor nor can you have a drink or two? Is there a full set of these rules so that people can ensure they don't fall foul of any of them?
-
Yes but you also have to factor in that many collectors are not on here. JM has a large reach, and is able to get prices that few others would. And also some collectors appear to be very wealthy, who just shell out no questions asked. It's probably easier for them to just overpay than spends their days and nights sourcing a cheaper copy. That's the collecting world in 2023. The overbid I mentioned involved the Gentlemen Four, again not a really rare record. Fortunately, the person who won it was able to laugh about it afterwards and tell me the full story.

As would I, as I certainly don't want to trip over somebody's trousers or hear DILYIID played. I remember going to the filming of Elaine's film at Blackburn, there were 60 year old women, dressed in them skirts and T shirts with patches on, tats, teeth missing and generally, let's be charitable, their waistlines had seen better days. "Industrial" was a word a mate used. They started to moan out loud that they went to WC in the 70s, had come along for the filming, and were told they "weren't required". I tried to explain that the scene in the film was trying to re-create a Niter as it was in the 70s (where anyone older than 25 was considered a "bit odd" or DS unless it was Brian or Sam. They weren't buying my argument at all. "But these kids weren't born when WC was on, we did and we're authentic" they bleated. Much as I would like the integrity of the northern scene to remain, that was lost for many of us years ago. Main reason I don't go to many places. But, what happens when some of the scene's older and good dancers are forced out of their brogues and into a scooter through no fault of their own? They have to stop doing what they love doing? That's the point I think we disagree on.

Not really. Two people really want the same record, so put in OTT bids top secure win and blow everyone else out. There is a famous story that involves two major league DJs (no names) who both wanted the same 45 real bad. So they both bid OTT to ensure no lightweights got in the way and they would win the record. One guy who put in an OTT bid won it, but at a much higher price than he expected to pay.

Still struggling here. You haven't explained WHY you wouldn't want to go to a venue, where someone has a mobility scooter. Or why when you can't dance, no one else in a similar position should.
-
Why is that? As the original northern soul generation get closer to the end of their lives, more will need assistance. Good luck to anyone who is unfortunate enough to have mobility issues, BUT wants to go and enjoy themselves. It struck home to me when I was DJ-ing on the south coast one night and saw a guy in a wheelchair. His chosen method of dancing was to swing his wheelchair one way, then the other, using his arms. He was really into the music and expressing himself the best he could. Good for him I thought. If people can't handle a bit of inclusivity to those less fortunate than themselves, maybe they should stay at home and spend their nights moaning about how everything has gone to pot.

Nothing surprises me in a world where a pair of old trainers sells for $8 million.

Ebay prices - crashing - Sign of what's to come ??
Steve G replied to Vadnochka's topic in Look At Your Box
Some good points there John. I'd add that a number of older collectors who aren't selling up are also buying less than they used to. I hear it time and again "I m very selective now, I've got enough records to last a lifetime, I am going to rediscover my record collection" etc. Not me, but several I have spoken to recently. -

The seller has responsibility. Hence if fails to arrive, or comes cracked, people make claims for refunds. -

Changing tastes and different collectors. Nothing ever stays the same. -

How you feeling about things now Dave? Odds on for relegation in my book with Vieira.

In my case, I sensed they knew of its value or demand and I think they were seeing if I was a stand up guy or a chancer, especially as I was a "walk in" who they didn't know (and here is today's visitor from Britain....). As not a record dealer, never have wanted or needed multiple copies of records Garry.

I got a Patterson Twins from JA, not sure if it was one of the 47 or before, but also got one from Malaco when I visited them in the late 90s. Won't go into detail, but it was because they asked me about someone who had written from Britain who claimed to be a big fan of the group forever, but was a record dealer / DJ (not one of the main ones) and I was honest with them.

Seriously worried about this season. Think we'll end up in the mire with Soton, Bournemouth etc. and our league position flatters us. Mentioning Soton, I see "Nathan Jones" has already been canned by Southampton. Not a case of him being gone too long then.
-
Absolutely right. But it is harder to keep up with what is "in" and what is "out" these days.
-
So....we have: - Music collectors who aren't record collectors - Record collectors who aren't music collectors - People with collections of Records who aren't collectors - Real working class collectors - Hot box collectors (what were most DJs in the 70s then?) - Cheque book DJ collectors -Cock waving collectors - Hoarders - Collectors with mental health issues Have I missed any so far? Steve

Good grief, I got mine from Pat Brady mid 90s, is the B side low rider or something?

Just to correct a couple of observations on here. John is always remembered for THAT new romantic LP in Manchester. But years before that, he was producing music. Initially through his relationship with Boby Franklin and James Mitchell (of the Detroit Emeralds), who were early contacts of his in the 70s. James was the guy who arranged his accommodation in Detroit when John visited and along with Boby made some introductions to John. Incidentally, It was in one such guest house that he discovered Ronnie McNeir on De-To in a rack of records he found and played through in the guest house lounge one evening. When I visited once, he told me he had been working with Ingram Family / Ingram on a new album, and I know there were other records he was involved in as well. So it is factually incorrect to say he was never involved in record production back then. Incidentally, beyond the list and visitors, he also supplied import copies of records to the main import shops in the 70s /80s. One title he mentioned to me (I think) was "Body Fusion," which he sold 2,000 copies of, mostly through UK record stores, rather than via his list. And to clear up another point, Marissa's brother (who worked at Soul Bowl in the 70s) told me that anything where there was more than 25 copies, that wasn't an obvious northern title for the "front page", went into soul packs as a matter of course. At the time, a lot of titles obviously were deemed "too slow" or "mid tempo" to sell in quantity via the list. Steve

Insurers use the JM price guide for claims. I know this for a fact. It's no different to insuring stamps, models, enamel signs, art, pottery or a host of other weird things that people collect etc. Insurers require declaration of high value content items before insuring them, so if you are insured, you will have sent them this pre inception. There will also be an agreed sum insured for the records in the event of theft, fire, accidental damage etc. Some will even insure your record box when going out, but not for the "value of several houses in Hull" which is where some northern boxes are right now.
