What has King Moses got to do with it? I bought that a few years ago about 2006, have bought loads of records before and after that as you well know.
I have been to enough clubs over the last 15 years to know that Hamilton Movement has been played to death at this point. It may still work on the dance floor but so does Eddie Parker at a northern venue…..HM has caught on with the northern scene, but for the more foreward thinking time to pack it away and move on - you are a self confessed hot boxer….you should know that.
But you are missing the whole alldayer thing that was going down - Sheffield, Manchester, Snaith, plus niters at Clifton Hall, Cleethorpes, other place in Rotherham etc. Yes Soul nights for sure at places as diverse as Cockermouth and Shrewsbury too. Rock City was a little bit later?
Up all day (until 1 am), sleep all night
Butch offered me one at one of the early Fleetwood weekenders that Richard and Kev ran - about the same time give or take a year that Pottsy turned up with 4 Gwen Owens on the Saturday. Not sure when it was exactly. I am sure it was late 90s but memory might be playing tricks on me.
It's a bit like Joseph Webster sounds brilliant in a club, not quite as good on the home speakers tho. I do like the Hamilton Movement, it's been massive on the rare soul scene for decades. As Mark says the 90s when it started….I guess we're now getting the swill / second wave from the n.s. scene who caught onto it a few years ago.
The letters page started to take off shortly after Sam started writing a column for me before the record reviews he'd write a few paragraphs, just like his Manifesto column really - and that's where the controversy was.....so it was the late multi coloured ones and then the white paper ones (New Blackbeat) where it really flared up, after I nudged out Kev Griffin. Cockney Mick / aka Dead Eye Dick.....saw him at Rowena's Charity alldayer in May.....he hasn't changed....same trouser and braces combo.
Yes I can....be warned, it was all small print in Roneo duplicator, so not as clear as todays PC edited work.....but I can upload some of it easily enough....Back and forth the letters went....
Actually the saturday night sessions at the Casino were dying, long before the Casino itself died. The Oldies nights - introduced when 1978? on a Friday were very popular, but some Saturdays in the latter days there were only 300 in. The place was very quiet.....rather than a scene dying it was a scene evolving.
And for that reason I am afraid any book you write may well be flawed in it's assumptions.
Yep. Some of the 60s boys took to wearing one black glove ala Black Power movement…one night Soul Sam got into a bit of banter with them. You have to remember at the time there was quite a bit of division between 60-s newies and modern.
The letters page was a great "seller" for me….sold loads of copies because of it….everyone had a say Lawson, Shard, Sam, Tommo etc….
