No he didn't have that. went through about 150 acetates, mostly released things. I got what was unissued or different mixes to released stuff. Will Hatcher You haven't seen nothing yet with a Tom Moulton booming beat and strings was another one.
-
My memory playing up there Dave….Chris King, that's where I got the unissued version of "You and I' and the unissued Patti Jo and Tony Drake from. He had traded them on to Brady in exchange for northern oldies

I've cut the rest of the quote from your post out to save some memory space for the site. I have rarely read such a load of self inflated egoist b/s in my life. Well I have actually, but only from one or two of the "heroes" you tell us we should listen to on "the doc". National DJ - do you make these terms up? I must be living in a completely different world to you, but your post is SO NOT what it's all about. Best wishes etc...

Thought you had that New York City Walkers back in the Stafford days Dave?

Getting through on the phone was always a problem. Engaged, engaged, engaged. Through. Remember when John was selling up to Craig Moerer in the 90s….Andy Davies calls says he's just found an unissued Millie Jackson album acetate and John wants to throw it in the skip

Just found a copy of "I'm superman" in my lock up which was a Soul Bowl cheapie or in a soul pack and it reminded me of another aspect. I was working in London and one day we had a train strike so I had to get a coach back to Peterborough from Victoria. This would have been 83. Anyway I was reading Black Echoes and this older geezer behind me leans through the seat gap and says in a Geordie accent "Can I borrow your Echoes when you've finished?". Turns out he was a big N.O collector who had been buying off of John since the 60s (Tony Wilson). We became regular travelling companions on the commute and I went to Soul Bowl with him a couple of times too. Anyway over the years John A had pretty much helped Tony build one of the best New Orleans collections you could imagine. Apart from all the Rics, Rons, Deesus, White Cliffss, Dovers, Parlos Instants etc., he had amassed all of the major northern rarities, and some mighty obscure things you just never see apart from in discographies. Anything John got from N.O Tony basically got a copy. In the late 80s unfortunately Tony ended up selling them all cheap. I think John was willing to buy them back, but he sold them somewhere else instead. Aside from the lists I reckon there were probably quite a few collectors scattered around who John helped build first rate collections with.

Excellent write up. There has just been so much stock go through those hands in the last 48 years it's unbelievable just how much soul music. Amazing lists too and some amazing prices back then. Where have all the records gone? First record I got from John was Prince & Princess "Stick together" on Bell in 1977, having heard Richard play it at Wigan. I started going to Soul Bowl in 1982, on Saturdays once a month, getting picked up by Soul Sam in Peterborough who would drive over from wherever he'd been on Friday night. I didn't have much money and always ended up spending more than I set out to. So no money for the rest of the month! Trouble is I started going too regularly ….Always the same story to the missus when she asked "How much did you spend?" "Oh only about £20". The important word was the "about" -it was always lots more. I remember the separate piles of records for different people, For Sam it was rare modern (which he was buying at the time) and for me a cheaper box of good soul records that John thought I'd like - everything from deep soul to modern. I always remember shelves of King records in the middle section, there must have been twenty thousand of them. That barn had some enormous spiders in it too. Then there were the stories John had, looking for records having guns being pulled on him, finding the first copy of Ronnie McNeir in the living room of a B&B that one of the Detroit Emeralds had him put up in, having to hide in a record shop in remote Georgia until an inquisitive and unfriendly crowd of locals had dispersed. Getting the first copies of Billy Woods from the sound engineer and going back on the bus to Philly with them in his bag etc etc. There was so much stock at Soul Bowl that no one could afford to buy everything that John had - even the front page you had to be very selective. Think we've all missed lots of good things over the years. John was also a great supporter of Blackbeat magazine in the 80s. And he's still doing it, turning up rare records to this day.

Yes I got one of those too when you did them…..Dave Halsall (Reforee on here) was the guy that had the ones on the first press that got out in the late 80s / early 90s. It's all so long ago now.
-
Other way round I am afraid. CD first, then the vinyl with an additional track, and then the box set with a 14th track. Don't know about the download as was buying physical plastic then. I remember getting the CD, and then the LP….and then the vinyl singles came out - blooming expensive way to collect. He certainly got bios money's worth out of me.
-
Yup Manny Campbell only made about 20 copies. Wonder how many of those 20 we can find on here.,….one here , and the auction copy makes two so far….
-
That box set was just one of his albums remade as a series of 7s and with an additional track to make up the numbers. Several good tracks on it IMHO but an oldie now….LOL

Northern Soul The Film Wins Best Film At Nme Awards
Steve G commented on dedji1955's article in News Archives
Great news. -
Butch has already said he played the instru off of a Virtue acetate. Re Tommy Keith, yep my assumption too, but he said it was Walter Johnson. Interestingly that was the name on the tape when the vocal was found too - Scepter stored tapes using artist real names….the "other version" comment was a real surprise to me too. Guess unless we can pin BJ down on this we'll never know the full story.
-
Has anyone ever seen a copy? It's listed in discographies etc. but I can't find anything about the actual record itself.
-
It's always possible, just saying Scepter didn't really use Bell Sound after 64 - Florence thought they were too expensive….The record was a Philly job, and Billy Jackson through and through. He reckoned that as well as the Walter Johnson (Wilson), and the instru. there is another version by Tommy Keith which I have not heard. (I originally thought it was Tommy Keith but apparently not). He did say he was going to put them all on an album, but we'll see. That was nearly 2 years ago…..Sort of the remnants of the Delites by the sounds of it. As Dave Moore says Billy's recollections of it are a bit patchy. You never saw the scuffed up Empires Bell Sound acetate then? Total fake. And there have been others made to look "authentic" too. Reality is you can never be 100% sure on something like that, but I remain very sceptical. Sorry.
-
Well that's not strictly true because Scepter did use Bell Sound on their early stuff. However, two things; firstly they had their own studio by late 1964 and use of Bell Sound was rare after that only dionne and one or two others, and more importantly Walter Wilson was a Philly record leased in from Billy Jackson. Doesn't look too good to me, unless Billy Jackson got it done on a visit to NY.

Where Are All The Bootlegs/reissues Coming From
Steve G replied to Royalpunkness's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi Simon, hope you are well…..JUNO is a good outfit, but they just can't tell what is what there is so much stuff each week. They don't bother with obvious boots but I think some slip through. -

How Big Was The Northern Soul Scene In The 70S ?
Steve G replied to arnie j's topic in All About the SOUL
Soul music then was popular too and undoubtedly the northern scene fed off of that. I mean we had B&S fortnightly, Black Music, then Echoes every week. There were import record stores all over the place etc. It was fashionable music for teenagers. Remember being on a bus when I was about 13-14 and a young lady was reading B&S. Phwoar! I thought. This was way before I was into northern, just into soul and clubby stuff. That wouldn't happen today, I mean finding a copy of B&S anywhere is hard enough…..soul music as a genre is a lot less popular with young people obviously. -

How Big Was The Northern Soul Scene In The 70S ?
Steve G replied to arnie j's topic in All About the SOUL
I never really questioned the WC 100,000 membership boast too much - on average in 76-78 there would probably be 100-200 new faces each week, many came back, many didn't. Lots of tourists, local lads who'd cobbled together the money to go the once etc. In Kent where I was living there were about 12 of us and assorted girlfriends who were proper into it. But when we got some northern played at the local pulling disco (usually about 3 records), about another 20 would join in dancing. But they weren't serious like us. Then there were those that claimed they went to Wigan etc but didn't - even back then - we could sniff these BSers out just in a brief conversation. -

These may have started by being played in northern clubs, but they crossed over to div-world….big time. -

John Manship Auction Results 11 -2 - 2015
Steve G replied to JOE TORQUAY's topic in Look At Your Box
I think that US piece is incorrect (nothing new there!). 12266 is I am pretty sure just the date the record was released and was probably first (i.e. 2nd December 1966). Contact was active years 66-67 Willie Cager etc., so maybe the Contact one was just a re-press with supposedly better distribution?
