  1. I am afraid that as my missus is a "headbanger" there are no such tunes in our house.
  2. Excellent posting there Alison - just been listening to some £5 "cheapos" myself today. Just perhaps some of the "cheapos" are "cheapos" because...they sold more...because...they were better produced records - just a thought, and I know life isn't really as simple as that
  3. indeed. Recorded in the 60's though....just not "played" here until much later - unles of course you lived in "Grosmont" it seems.
  4. 30 hours a week I wish I had that luxury Dave - 12-14 hours out at work, leaves the balance of the day for sleeping, nosh, catching up with the family etc. Lucky if I get onto ebay at all during the week.
  5. Frankie On summer sats out on the patio with a "small tipple" and some good company Winter Sats - box with CSI, Law & order, followed by MOTD and.... a "small tipple"....
  6. So if it ain't the DJ's Andy, who does push things like Bettye Swann etc up so much in price?
  7. The new "thinking" amongst some of our friends in the US (I stress some) is that if you cannot "locate" a record in either of the price books, then it must by definition be very rare indeed. Assuming these two purchasers mentioned on this threads are not complete idiots, other possible explanations are: Curtis Mayfield - producer - needs a copy for sampling - got a budget of $150 to buy an original , Masqueraders - a group member trying to get his old recordings back. But agree total "madness"...
  8. Col - hope you are well - you really should know by now that every single "issue" can be traced back in a maximum of three steps to one of either Ian Levine, Simon Soussan, The Penguin, Russ Winstanley or Russ's uncle in Ft Lauderdale....did I leave anyone out?
  9. Hi Dan, I agree entirely with your sentiments - except possibly the internet, which is both good and bad, and on the + side has opened up many more records / artists etc. I think that part of the problem is that a lot of Northern DJs actually don't have what I'd term "classic" artists languishing in his or her collection - the sort of thing that many of us bought as "cheapos" along the way. I think we all might be surprised at just how many "big swingers" out there don't have any Pickett / Staton / Dees / Womack / Swann /Philly issues etc etc sitting at home on the racks. Of course some of the younger folks will not have had the luxury of being able to buy these recorfds at 30p or whatever we did.....but in essence I agree with your analysis.
  10. You certainly are in fine form today Sir.

  12. In short it is called collecting. It has something to do with the "hunter gatherer" side of the psyche in some of us. Also a competitive element, which I know is "Un PC" in some circles these days - but it is what it is.
  13. My Sammy Gaha has got misfiled and I cannot find it now - so trivia question is it the same record that Quickest Way Out did? - having played QWO yesterday it certainly sounds familiar / similar.
  14. Thanks and excuse me for being so dense when it comes to these things...
  15. Where is this photo - on site somewhere? Are there others?
  16. Not sure whether he was talking about "Hardest Part" or Curtis "Broom broom boing boing, pew, pew...How can I tell her...." This thread has become tied up in itself
  17. Some excellent "fare" there Girth
  18. Curtis Anderson - one time Baltimore Radio DJ - we tracked him down for Blackbeat before he did "The Hardest Part"
  19. Oops that should say "Cost of doing business for the seller" - but of a "Freudian" slip there.
  20. Depends on what they are... Let me share with you this dilemna...won an EBay auction quite pricey. The bloke emails me and says "You need to add $40 for Paypal" Not disclosed on the original posting, in fact all that was posted for payment was the Paypal logo "This seller prefers Paypal" "Will ship worldwide" etc..So at that point do I forego the record and suggest the guy engages in a little sex and travel (in two words), or do I bite my tongue and pay the "extra"? I am afraid I bit my tongue in this particular instance as it was a rare 45. As far as I am concerned PP is a cost of doing business for the buyer, and I considered myself hard done by by this non disclosure. So I left no feedback, and the guy chased me up about it too - by which time of course the record had arrived safely "chez moi", and I was able to tell the dealer precisely where to stick his missing "positive feedback".
  21. Believe the story to be: There were originally 25 copies of this imported or brought back from a US trip (possibly by Mike Charlton or Rod Dearlove - I cannot remember with "clarity" now). Those were "snapped up" and disappeared into collections in no time. Since then for many years no other copies turned up, and that the only ones coming up for sale were the 25 already in the UK (i.e. existing owners selling / reselling). There were clearly more than 25 pressed up originally, so can only assume a few more have been "found". Probably everyone knows this, but this is of course the same guy that did the "love it or hate it" "How can I tell her" a few years before -a one time "Clifton Hall" spin....
  22. This is a brilliant tune - not sure I'd class it as a handbag sound at all, but I understand your point.
  23. I only put records in the playbox that I like anyway, so agree if it's requested and it's in there, then play it. I don't believe DJ's should compromise their own integrity and play records that they don't actually like. But perhaps I'm very old fashioned....
  24. Shouldn't you be packing your bags by now Johnny?
  25. OK - consider it "guaranteed" Frankie. Robert Ruffin & Romance "Cruise". Much better than S** C*****, I agree.
