Me too, looking at that list it's a joke. Hundreds and hundreds of records, commercialisation takes over!

Hello Mark, good read, Dallas Steele also had a single on Wand as John Steele & The Del Mates. A play on words obviously. Steve

J.R "Ralph" Bailey. I reckon it was a demo song they cut that Wand put out on a limited release due to the help they'd given in writing songs for Chuck Jackson, a couple of which appeared soon after this - Wand 1142 was one of them my numeric brain tells me without checking.

I let my Willie Mae Thornton go for £500 a few years ago. So well done Mick. As I recall mine came from Tricky Dicky Scaines shop in Mile End - 10p or 30p so a tidy mark up at least.

Looks really interesting. This is one I'll buy when it goes to DVD.

Penthouse was a Memphis label wasn't it?

….or you could take the Jo Wallace's legendary stance at These Ole Shoes. A small group of punters who had arrived together go up to her and start moaning saying "the music here is sh*te" - it probably was mind . Anyway Jo says "All right then - there's yer £3 back, now F8ck off"….

You for real? You are not Sooty in disguise are you? Is that Fingers who used to DJ? Please don't say you used to play this? Honestly it's a shocking remake, and how you could even give it credibility is beyond me. It certainly is NOT making the scene interesting at all. Just another in a now long list of embarrassing moments.

Very true. Remember a NW booking where I was told to bring "different stuff we don't play the same old here". All I got was a procession of people asking for "What", "My little girl", "Real love" etc. I hadn't bought the records they wanted to hear. All got a bit antsy, with a couple of fluffers being brave and coming up and being rude. They weren't happy, I wasn't happy. No way would I play those records anyway - square peg round hole. Stick loyal to records you believe in. There will always be someone else on after you that can play all the Trophy hunter records. "I'm gone", "She's gone", but "She'll come running back" so I'll be "Wanted and needed". Anyway theres a "Job Opening" if you "Stick by me baby".

Unknown Motown - the internet strikes again with mis-information. Agree a tailor made remake and it was credited to The Carstairs. What's more embarrassing though is seeing that this was a local soul night round the Beds area. One of the DJs needs a slap.
-
Not you again? Its a ridiculous comment. Everyone who travels is a "national DJ" and many are "international DJs". Not sure why I am wasting my time typing this
-
8 times - I wasn't there last year but was reliably informed…
-
We usually keep count of how many times it gets played.

It's all part of the joke circus that has taken over as commercialism has killed the scene. Overpriced records, bootlegs galore, coffee mugs, tourists, plays about the Wizard of Oz, dance lessons, DVDs full of self import ant talking heads, flash mobs, retro wear, unimaginative playlists, weekender anthems, soul nights everywhere, more DJs than punters, people that don't know anything craving their five minutes of fame, emperors new clothes the list goes on. All so very far away from where the scene that should be. But there's no guarantee that the overpriced Al Williams didn't go to a collector that none of us know, we're all assuming it was going to a DJ, it might not be. For the record my Al Williams is a LaBeat WD. Mint.

Always good when we get an artist on here, to give us the facts rather than guesswork that some people seem to love.

I also have a local issue of "Love is not a stranger" on Alston 4577 as well as an Atlantic distributed one. This side came out twice as a B side. Alston 4574 is the version Mark wants with the "You can be a lady" A side. Nice 45. Strange that they put the same B side out twice though….obviously short of tracks.

Ira Watson PS…..Love it.

Here is a page from an early 90s list I found today when clearing some stuff out. Soul Bowl was unique in so many ways. It was never a "one trick pony". As well as northern and 60s John always sold funk, deep soul, 70s -80s - 90s, 12s, LPs, Motown and general soul records. Its reach was therefore large, essentially anyone into any type of soul music would buy records from Soul Bowl. People you wouldn't associate with "the scene". Back in the 70s, there was the wholesale operation mentioned by Mark - shops like Record Corner, Black Wax etc. in London supplied with copies of new and recent releases and shifting copies in high quantities. Much of the stuff they advertised in Black Music and B&S came from Soul Bowl and I am sure many import stores all over the country got lots of their import stock from Kings Lynn. But beyond selling records at the Bowl, John's contribution to soul music has also been immense - there were the custom releases like Milton Wright, there was Grapevine Records which everyone knows about. We mustn't forget Expansion Records in the early days either and all the fantastic material that John sourced, like Anthony & Donette, Ronnie McNeir and a host of other soul acts who wouldn't have otherwise got to see their material released here to a new generation of soul music lovers. And I think Rare Grooves was also John (not 100% sure about that), a short lived label that put out LR Superstars in 1990. John has always had an impeccable ear for spotting a great tune. He's also produced a few soul songs over the years, working with Ingram, Leo Lyons and others.
