  1. Great stuff. Picked up the Groove Merchants for $1 in memphis a few years back - it was on the floor of this record store, a bit scuffed, but plays fine, and the owner was looking through his books to try and price it, and couldn't find it listed anywehere This was pre Manship / Brown books, and what a great record it is too.
  2. "PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A PRIVATE PRESSED ACETATE" = Please remember this is not an authentic original, but a copy my mate did the other week.
  3. "So help me woman" - brilliant An occasional spin pour moi at places like "Essence"......good luck, you should get it quite easily - andshouldn't cost much.....
  4. Larry Nix - the most prolific engineer of the early 70's - or one of them. Think he also had a brother or relative in the biz as well - he appears on literally thousands of run out grooves.....over to Colin for the full run down...
  5. No Sam didn't like it that much for a long time.....I remember playing both sides to him (covered up of course!) a few years ago and he wasn't pursuaded. Of course, things change, and he grew to like it....but that's essentially why it took him so long to get one...Steve
  6. BTW what happened to Winstanley? He comes on here all guns blazing, then offering people Charity tickets etc for good behaviour, then disappears again.....weird....
  7. Yep been played on and off for about 10 years by the more discerning jocks - and a sound that is still to have it's day.
  8. Which one is she then? The reruns are on over the weekend.
  9. According to the Japanese sleeve notes of my P Vine "Joneses LP" GD & the Big J were actually...erm...The Joneses
  10. Top Man's version there Garethx - blows all the others away, and indeed you have reminded me to include it in the box for Mark H's Wednesday do next week, so thanks for reminding me. As for "Pearl DD" I also dig the funk side. Cool
  11. It's on down here too Jon. Heard it Monday night. Quite catchy, as I recall.
  12. BTB CoCo & Ben - big spin for Arfa and Sam in the early 80's at all the niters back then.
  13. Didn't JM have one on auction for £1+
  14. Yes totally out of character for Russ - still maintain it's very good and it's certainly not pop - hence the shocked icon. A real snappy beater that'll get your pulse going. Might drop it on early doors - agree it might be too fast for todays middle aged spreads, but plenty of handclapping snaps etc...
  15. Couldn't possibly comment, confirm or deny.
  16. Goodness! There's no answer to that. Welcome aboard.
  17. Dee Dee BARNES - great record. You say Russ played it?
  18. Ignoring your somewhat aggresive "come and get me" rhetoric at the beginning of your post - I cannot quibble with the quality of those sides Pete.

Agreed, and in the spirit of trying to breathe life into this very tired thread.... Who threatened Simon Soussan with a knee capping. Answer: John Vincent? Dunno tell us. Who pulled a gun on a wigan dj in 1975? Water pistol: Steve G - but it was later than 75? Other: still to be confirmed by BigBoy Where has Billy Paul gone? To "Bring the family back" Was Cleethorpes in the heyday that good? Best period was late 19th century where it was frequented by many thousands of holidaymakers on a Sunday who'd travel by train from surrounding towns and cities, so I have read. One more question: Who left an apple core in JV's box in 1976? Answer: To be confirmed in due course.
  20. Yes this is what the boys used to do at Soul Essence - lots of tape. Designed to stop a certain (and nameless) "knob-twiddler" from practicing his trade. Anyway he managed to rip all the tape off and still adjust the controls I do agree though, most DJ's are tone deaf so should leave settings where they are. If they think the sound is muffled they should 'ave a word with the promotor' and let him / her sort it out. It may be the settings need adjustment - it may be simply that the speakers need coning and are fcuked.
  21. Derek - local issue (green), National issue (bamboo trees). Andre Williams label, so not sure budget would have been much of a factor as he was dripping green back in the day. I'll check on those Voicemasters though. From memory nothing that stood out, but hey a fresh pair of ears, todays vibes etc. who knows....S

    Phew!
  23. It all depends on your definition of "modern". Now I do realise that there are those here abouts who define "modern" as being soul recorded after Dec 69 (and prior to Dec 75) - i.e. music that's 30 years old or more. On the other hand the Modern room at Stoke, I'd wager there would be very little played pre 1990 (or maybe 2000 for all I know) in there. I was labouring under the misapprehension that music recorded in the early - mid 70's was more akin to music from the 60's than say todays true "modern" is to either. I was also belabouring under the misapprehension that most of these barriers had been broken down especially with some of the passe and totally overplayed modern, and also some of the crap modern making into northern playlists (Party time man being an example of the latter, Ace Spectrum the former). Anyway stop grumbling, and just be glad you got to listen to Sam spin an hour of good quality music.
  24. Yup ripe for reactivation.....at Solid Hit in AUgust - it was never a common record was it? Oh and good to see you back in action MB.
  25. Only mine...
