Think rarest of the rare is a valuable reference, and interesting. The next one in the series is the "Best of the Best" - but hey, you know what we'll all start arguing about what's included / excluded at that point.

Partly, though how this "known copy" thing is actually calculated baffles me. Whilst dealers aren't sitting on stocks of 100 of any rare records, I don't know how anyone knows where all the copies of anything are, or put another way when some of these reviews of record collections was done. Can't remember anyone doing mine, unless it was when I was in the US - the missues did mention something about us being audited - didn't realise it was for records - and I don't think I am alone.

You've all forgotten "She's just a pretty thing...way hay hay" Interviewed him on 24-7 a few years ago, and that was the catalyst for him coming over to the UK - a commensurate professional he was too....having done his vinyl output, let's not forget his productions either on Andrew Williams Bamboo label, Wand, Mister Chand etc......I mark the old geezer on Corrie right - Gene Chandler a leg end indeed!

Forgot to mention the Pearl Dowdell has a great funk B side. Frank Williams is THE version though for the top side "It's all over" - on Lloyd.

Fascinating thread this - btw Benny Signler = Bunny's brother, it's not actually him Mark. Re playing records more than once, Richard did do this, and even played the same record straight after itself - I remember him playing Phil Lowman "Rock me" either two or three times one after the other. I also remember him clearing the floor with Judy Freeman "Hold On", apart from about two of us - my how times have changed.

Yes bought several pressings on my first visit as a newby in 1976 until some kindly older chap on the station next morning told me that they really weren't the real deal, and I should buy originals - great words of wisdom which I heeded with immediate effect. Then later bought a flaming Emeralds off of the booth when that was breaking in 1977. It was cracked round the groove, so I sent it back to Russ's Monster Imports for changing. Never heard a dickie bird from the ignorant pr8tt. And so started my love affir with Russ Winstanley

Agreed top sound, top guitar solo too. And you'd be hard pushed to find a better modern deep soul side on the flip. Been top of my wants list for several years now.

She Devil were a Baltimore Md female group - I have a promotional pic of them in hi cut leotards etc. Sadly though this didn't help them as all of their Charm City Records were attrocious. If you can remember Curtis "How can I tell her" on the same label with the motor bike revs for the intro and syndrums - well She Devil is 1000 times worse.

Do you know I was thinking just that on the walk home from the station last night, after posting about Richard playing it. Let's be honest about it - it came at a time when England was in the grip of punks etc "Stab your back" and all that stuff. And I thought "Yeah this was the closest northern soul came to punk rock - just right at the time. As you say waaaaaaaaalk all over youuuuuuu "Clap"

Yes on Golden Gate as well. DTE had about 9 or 10 releases - got em all tucked away and the Chymes and Chimes were both on the label, along with several General Crooks and a couple of other things that escape my fading memory at this time.

Last decade no. I think in the 70's they were a great source for unwanted vinyl - now a complete waste of time. Hope all is well with you Russ. Steve

Thanks for the replies guys - I thought it rang a distant bell. Paid £1 for it in Ryde on Friday sitting unwanted in a record shop on the hill You can still get a bargain then even in 2006! Before anyone else heads for the "Red Jet" across the water from Southampton, I didn't find anything else of merit on the island apart from a Daptone 45 which was £4,95.
