It's one that has evaded me as well Trouty so you are in good company. Had a couple of sniffs at a copy but by the time I had reached down and extracted the wallet it had gone -both times.

Have had a good few plays out of this - excellent "must have" Xmas pressy for you all from Aunty or Sis. All of their hits on original TV shows from the 60s / early 70's, the only let down being the speeded up version of "Rolling Stone". Other than that it's hits all the way and some curious shots from UK TV in 66 with some very early northern / mod dancing as well. I reckon this is the best DVD you'll get this Christmas.

Saw him a few months back at Dezboro Ritz - I'd swear he hasn't changed at all in 25 years - I am sure he is the living incarnation of Dorian Gray (picture in the attic etc.). But seriously a down to earth and friendly guy. He ended up trading garrige / house / r&b / rap etc and told me he has a warehouse of that stuff. Top bloke

As far as I am concerned no one can touch the mighty Ruffin. HOWEVER Williams was also a fantastic singer, and his voice was stunning in it's own way. So whilst not fully agreeing with you, I know the point you are making, and agree with your sentiment that we should also recognise Williams for the pure talent that he was. Steve

As we didn't have cars in the 70's and could get to Wigan by train, we only ever went to Yate once, in 79-80 I think. This was on one occasion when Kev Griffin's girlfriend (who could drive but didn't have a car) hired a minibus. The idea was we would go down to Brighton, pick up Graham Constantine, and then drive to Southampton, pick up "The Wid", and then up via Newbury to Yate. I can't remember much of the night - would have been around 1980 - Dave Withers was guest DJ on the night, and we all thought it was good to hear Dave out and about. Seem to recall Cheryl Berdell was big at the time...oh and part of the Soussan record collection "appeared" for sale that night as well via "Colin Bee" etc. so mucho flim-flamming and jostling around the record boxes! All very hazy now, and suffice to say I didn't really know any of the bods on this thread at the time, apart from the DJ's. Going back I seem to recall stopping off at Wid's aunties house for a cup of tea, but that's really it....very dim memories. I think if we had cars at the time it would have been our regular haunt, the place sounded really good - and obviously hosted some great nights too. We did venture to an allnighter at Abingdon, a do at Newbury and also an allnighter or two in Bournemouth at this time as well but then Kev split with his girlfirend so it was back to "billy no cars".

Spot on Dave. It was played for a while and I managed to get a copy from Soul Bowl for £20 which was a lot of money in those days. It was then that I wrote to Curtis Anderson at the radio station he worked at. From that I got a few 7s and a 12 - and pictures of She Devil is leotards etc. We used the pic of Curtis on the cover of Blackbeat - that would have been the fall of 81.

Yep I know hence the . The really strange bit is I got in touch with him in 1981. He did ask me what I thought of the record, and I said it would be better without the "room room" noises. It sounds spooky now but maybe he took my advice . I never knew he did a second version until reading this thread.

Perhaps it's taken off with the disco / boogie boys The 12" is pretty hard to find, but I agree the 7" should be around. Curtis is Curtis Anderson, but I am sure everyone knew that.

Looks like an original to me Gasher. Y'know I wondered why I got that same mottled effect when I was sometimes scanning (original) records. Roger's explanation makes perfect sense now that he has explained it. Enlightened.

Heard a lot about "gaps" in the scene and the one that strikes me isn't modern mouldies (sorry Mikey), but good plain old 60s soul. Now we used to have great 60s soul nights in and around London - where you could hear such classics as "lipstick traces", Spellbinders "Help me", the un PC "She blew a good thing" , Darrell Banks, Dells, Radiants, Maxine brown, etc. some of the better Tamla Toytown, but basically good old rip roaring 60s soul (as opposed to northern - though there would be some of that as well). Seems like there is nowhere that plays this now, and whilst I realise most people probably have many of these records, they still sound great out. So for my money there is a real gap in the market place for an authentic 60s soul night 8-1. Am I the only person that thinks this way?

Loads of "good eggs" on the scene "O", and there has always been a minority of rabble rousers - even back in the 70's it was quite nasty at times. Don't lose the faith m8, cherish it. See you in December by which time I am hoping you will have improved your spelling of my name
