WHAT????? Rod Stewart can sing?????? Rod Stewart has committed more crimes against soul music than anyone else I can think of on a sunday morning - and that includes the Stones. Have you ever heard his appalling versions of "If loving you is wrong", "Oh no not my baby" etc. He butchered these records and there's no sign of any singing on them as far as I can hear, just awful off key croaking......total sh*te - YUK

Sorry guys I just do not view the Mecca stuff as being modern soul. It was never termed as such at the time and it certainly doesn't sound modern. I do understand you could argue it was modern at the time compared to 60's. To me modern soul is post Y2K stuff. In the early 80's the term was used to describe what was then modern soul (i.e. releases from 1977-1984 etc) - i.e. the Sam, Arthur Richard etc spins of that period. However I don't think you can use the same phrase to describe these records 25 years on. I prefer the term 70s / 80s soul, as I think it is more descriptive. Steve

yEs indeed, I'd forgotten about Gordon Berry. I haved a copy of that and we reckon it was withdrawn - maybe because of the name which sounds suspiciously too close to Berry Gordy for his liking.

Mind you if he'd turned up with a copy in his box, I might well have sent him packing again
