Some of us would say that once everyone has got the sound it's no longer "hot". I think I'll start a thread what shouldn't be in a hot box.....starting with the Hamilton Movement, followed by Tolbert.

Some of the biggest names in the 70s were notorious hot boxers....and it's not just the young DJs either - had a chat with one of the scene's elder DJ's the other day and was surprised (amazed) at the records he has got rid of to finance new purchases. I like the point about leaders and followers, essentially DJs are one or the other......I'd also question whether the same record should be played more than once, especially at an evening do - I won't play anything that someone else has already played. The good DJ I think needs to a) believe in themselves b have some exclusives c) carry some requests / big sounds. d) not just chase "trophy records"

No it doesn't. It has a slowish crossover crawler side on the flip - very nice too - which was an old Soul Essence spin for me a few years back. I suspect the high bidder has been duped into thinking it's some sort of original which I really object to. I do expect a degree of openness and honesty from dealers as not everyone who wants to buy records has the knowledge of 20 or 30 years of collecting behind them. Steve

Very naughty. I hope the high bidders have the good sense to retract their bids....Describing a record as "Re" is meaningless. Fed up with these rip off merchants all over the place, they are making collecting a less attractive pursuit for many who don't know the difference. I note Switzerland again - are there any genuine soul dealers in Switzerland, they all seem to be rippers :angry:

The original theme was on the former - i.e. what tunes would you theoretically HAVE to put in the hotbox - on the basis you were rotating 200 records - well that's how I read it, hence titles like New World, S&F etc. However I prefer to hear jocks play different sounds, so the notion of newies and unknowns in the box really appeals to me, but obviously not as appealing to the dancefloor. So in reality we carry a bit of each around with us and the good dj will balance a little of both.

Two great records which I have in my collection, but I don't think they've ever been in my box. Sorree

Yes but a few hot box sounds are OK surely? I agree with the sentiment though.....

One thing you must be, however hot your box might be, is fully confident in the quality of the sounds you are playing. With that thought.... PS Simon, we're still waiting for your cover ups - so far you've wussed out - I assume because we'll probably know them

Right Simon, Any self respecting DJ these days needs a handful of cover ups in that Hot Box,.....and the key is coming up with sensible names for them (i.e. not silly names like Candy Coated People ). Before your appearance at New Chapter the Soul Police will require to know what yours are???? .....and James any self respecting DJ also needs some unknowns / excloosives in that box as I am sure you'd agree.....no point in us all playing Wee, New World etc. PS boys - the Yarmouth green stuff - think that must be the mushy peas, served with the food. Best taken on a plate, can be quite messy if drunk from a pint glass. You end up with fluorescent green all down your T shirt in my experience

Agree with this. Some people have no morals. You cannot let anything out of your sight for even seconds.
