Dear old Trevor Nelson - another self appointed "know it all". Thing is people have always slagged off northern, I remember as a kid reading Tony Cummings articles in Black Music and being shocked (though with heinsight some / much of it seems fairly spot on ) Anyway the vast majority of us aren't racist so don't get wound up by these "talking heads"; they simply can't understand our thing, so leave them to their abstract maschinations however offensive their implications may be. The real question is the dumbing down of the BBC to the point where ill researched programmes always go to the same "bores" who talk loud and say......well nothing much really (to bastardise the James Brown thing)......but we've done the BBC to death on the former thread.

Also fair to say that in the 70's soul was not the most popular form of music amongst the A-C community. Most kids I knew were into their Reggae and Dub rather than soul.

Wearing Soul Badges
Be careful with that J20 m8 - it's full of sugar! Drink 4 bottles and I reckon you'd be half way to becoming a diabetic. See you on Saturday Neil.

Wearing Soul Badges
Yeah I think the "garb" had a certain charm back in the 70s and helped identify us from the "divvies" at school and in the youthclub. And yes BigO you certainly have worn some avante garde gear in your time looking at some of your photos..... (I know you'll get me back for that on Saturday so will be watching out for you "spiking" my beer with one of your "wine gums" Nowadays I think "full traditional northern soul regalia" looks a bit sad really, more like "fancy dress" than anything else and somewhat absurd on a fifty something, which we all apparantly are (see Levine LP thread ). I am also of that mindset that scoffs at the "Teds"whenever I see them dressed up in pink drainpipes, quiffs, bootlace ties etc. and similarly ageing City Gents in "Ace of Clubs" Biker gear on a Saturday.....but we are all different. Then again there's the Mod on my station with his Parka bedecked in badges of Wigan Casino, Stax Records, Torch etc. I got talking to him about music and it was clear he didn't know the first thing about it, hadn't even heard of Ray Pollard! Fine if people want to dress up, but it's not for me. A discreet "patch" worn under a Feragamo jacket is probably just about acceptable tho' if you must

Chalky, John told me the engineer had 250. John had to go back to Philly on the bus and already had a sack full of records, so he took a few with the intention of going back and getting the rest. When he did the engineer had moved / gone. This wouldn't have been unusual in the mid 70s at all, this sort of thing was going on all the time. I still say they're buried in a waste site and probably decomposed by now. Oh and I am in the risk business as well in a way Ernie, but I'd say this is a good risk to take.

Ebony Sounds Discography Needed
If you are talking about the 70s label there are only about 12 on the label. Think from memory (as they are all in the "lock up") they start at #175 and run to about 186. Some great 45's there btw so keep collecting 'em.

Any Great New Discoveries This Year?
Well not strictly a new discovery because it's been known about for years but one which is getting more spins this year is Homer Banks "Seetie Pie".

Yeah but those copies were all in the hands of the Engineer who took them because he hadn't been paid. My reckoning is he would have thrown them out about 2 weeks after John met him and their remnants now sit buried deep on Staten Island under a zillion tons of NY rubbish.

Agree, it's so bad in fact that I actually played Betty Wright's original at Essence in April just as a reminder that underneath this pile of tang lies a decent girly soul record ("Tonight's the night") Holly St James has to be up there for me- shockingly crass when it was first played why anyone would want to revive it is beyond me Charles Johnson "Never had a love so good" - just grates on me and has done for the last 20 years or so. I actually liked it between 1981 and 1985 now it's just mind numbingly boring and a cure for insomniacs... anyway the B side is much better. Finally "Charles Sheffield "Vodoo working" -

Any Great New Discoveries This Year?
Yeah but that's been around for 6-7 years now, not counting those that knew it in the 80s. There is some good new stuff around, and quite DJ's spinning 'em.

Unless the Plumbmeister and his cohorts are thinking of allowing me back behind the decks sometime, I am afraid Friday nights in Wigan are out of bounds for little old moi I'll play the Trey Js though on Saturday and dedicate it to absent friends "Oop Norf"
