Rare and Northern Soul - so what's the difference?
Steve G replied to Tomangoes's topic in All About the SOUL
Very different scenes these days. I remember being at a large oldies event, lets just say what some would call "the bagged trousered brigade" out in force, beers towels, hats, holdalls, white sox the lot. And a "Worst of Wigan" soundtrack from the DJS - every DJ playing Mickey moonshine, Kiki Dee etc. I distinctly remember thinking "what the hell am I doing here? Never again, I have got nothing in common with these people whatsoever". But then again I haven't been out to too many rare soul do's either recently…maybe just becoming a grumpy old man LOL -

Its also a timing thing for me. Northern = mainly Wigan / torch etc. era. Rare = mainly post Wigan era. -

Rare and underplayed gives you the option of playing underplayed non rare of course which i like. And you never hear the term "Rare and overplayed" Rare is the most over used term out there, records of which there are hundreds floating about described as "rare" left right and centre. -

The rare soul scene in Europe and beyond

as you say Dave….each to their own. And yes you are right I avoid all of the brits abroad events (and local oldies nights which also exist in parts of Europe) - thing is you can normally work out what the music will be like by looking at the DJ line-up. Going abroad isn't cheap for those of us not in full time employment. -

OK someone has to say this…. There is more than one scene in Europe Some upfront and refreshingly new, others Brits abroad playing oldies. -

That Bobby Moore was an album track….think we're talking about stuff from the vaults Kev. Natural Resources by contrast was unissued until last year. -

TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE

Its an interesting view….but surely the big promotors are just pandering to what the public want? Nothing more nothing less. The fact that they can get 1,500 people to turn up and pay at an oldies event says more about the public and what they want to spend their hard earned money on than it says about the promotors. People go out for what they think will be a good night / weekend out….that is what it is about isn't it? The vast majority seem to be more interested in dancing to the (very) familiar than they are about hearing something new / exciting, record collecting etc. In that regard the NS oldies scene is no different to wider society. Amongst my "civilian" friends aged 50+ very few of them have any interest in anything new musically. If Genesis or Status Quo are doing a revival bore, they're creaming their pants trying to get tickets. Maybe we have to admit that for most people, they only want to hear the soundtrack of their youth. Interesting you mention the 100 Club. I can remember in the early days of its popularity London was awash with cash ins - 2nd and 3rd division DJs / mod renegades etc. putting on northern soul nights everywhere in town. But all of the cash in nights soon died out. We had fire in our bellies and people voted with their (discerning) feet, and supported the club that was authentic and the 100 Club won out. The battle for a forward thinking progressive soul scene in this country was lost many years ago and is now limited to a few pockets as you say. It's not worth getting upset about. Honest. -
TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE
Steve G replied to Speedlimit's topic in All About the SOUL
That is exactly my point. You could probably count the number of DJs on the northern scene playing the previously unissued stuff on a couple of hands, while the other 12,864 DJs on the northern scene don't and will never. Yet they'll sell their grandchildren to get their hits on a copy of The Tomangoes. -

It is a good modern tune. However it is totally UNSUITABLE for a northern night. -
TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE

Pretty clear to me that this thread is about the northern scene Kegsy. The modern scene is entirely separate in my opinion. I couldn't resist altering your post above since apart from a few who genuinely champion new music "modern" is the most mis-used term out there. I've been in plenty of modern rooms which turn out just to be anthem-fests….same old tunes every time. Modern oldies if you like. In my view, the northern scenes haven't accepted new / recent releases and why on earth would they? It is a music form based on the rhythms and sounds of the 60s and early 70s, not todays music. Even "previously unissued" 60s recordings struggle for acceptance as in the recent One-Der-Ful / M-Pac releases. How many northern DJs have fitted any of them into their sets? Surely the reality is that there is no longer a northern scene as such….Instead we inhabit a world where there are a multitude of scenes, loosely playing similar sounding 60s / 70s music. The public pays their money and takes their choice as to which venues they support. Whether that be a "Mecca reunion" or "Lifeline". Today `I can go to venues in London where I don't know a single person, and equally ones where I know just about everyone. It is totally fragmented and thats the way it will stay. -
TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE
Steve G replied to Speedlimit's topic in All About the SOUL
Do you honestly think that the northern scene today would accept the playing of new / recent releases. I don't. Sounds like Archie Bell were contemporary for the time, and records like Lou Pride were played on the scene within 3 years of their initial release. So they still sounded contemporary in a world where Radio 1 was still playing "Knock on wood" and "Sitting on the dock of the bay" every day of the week. Music today is totally different and the odd new release that did eventually go on to make it on the northern scene (e.g. "Bamboos" Tighten up, "Who's the King") a) were made to sound like old records, and B) took years to get accepted on the northern scene. Of course I am dismissing that piece of cr*p "Tribute" which was just too awful to mention in a discussion about soul music. -
TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE
Steve G replied to Speedlimit's topic in All About the SOUL
Oh dear, not the "there's no good music anymore" thread Len? Ya gotta look man, it is out there. Thing is, if it ain't got that northern beat, then northern fans aren't likely to go a bundle on it. But as you are into your mid tempo (the Midtempo activist) how about the recent (month ago) Nicole Willis "One in a million", Strange Faith "Walking over", Grace Love & The Love Tones or the new Lenny Williams album from the last ten days? I'll warn ya now they are hardly likely to get played at your local northern night though because they ain't northern. And this thread is about the northern scene. -
