  1. I am afraid it looks moody to me. The font is different. I am happy to have a closer look at the vinyl if the record is in Cheshunt Wayne.

  5. Great stuff, keep up the excellent work Dave.
  6. Nice write up Dave. Just to add a bit….he'd worked at Bobby Robinson's Fire / Fury set up in Harlem until 1960, when Scepter employed him. He left Scepter when Pete Garrison was hired, worked at St. Lawrence, and then in 1966 for the Leaner's at One-Der-Ful, promoting Alvin Cash etc. His name must appear on at least a thousand records and his tireless promotional work was legendary in the industry. He was one of the most under-rated people in our music.
  7. Ian Clark used to play Martha Starr version mid 80s.

  9. Hi Billy it was the mid 80s and the venue was The Wirrina. To fill in the gaps the police found a shoebox type set up without anything in it apart from some wires, and I was DJ-ing straight after the venue re-opened and the police left. The atmosphere was electric as everyone came back inside to make the most of it and were determined to have a good time.
  10. Yeah, not so great when you are on a monday morning sales pitch and need to be on your mettle…..and you got Shake Sheri banging round in your fuzzy head ha ha….
  11. Hi Martyn, OK then Holly St James v Bettye Swann - only one winner on the northern soul scene. Rubin "you've been away" v James Carr - only one winner there too. I mean the northern scene is a dance scene by definition and the records are selected as such. The beat comes first, soulfulness second. Could you imagine playing "Today I started loving you again" or "You're pouring water on a drowning man" at a northern night? No nor can I. So yes dance scene and I've named and shamed as well….ha ha. PS: That's not to say there aren't many great soul records played on the northern scene IF they've got the beat.

  13. Dance scene. Quite a few wouldn't know a good soul record if it jumped off the decks and hit them
  14. I agree this guy isn't as dumb as he tries to make out….."Me I am just a humble games dealer and I found these records in my Grandma's woodshed and I don't know anything about them" almost as good as "I haven't got a record player but it looks in good condition to me"…All BS.…. On the other hand I am sure it will look good on the decks at a soul night / niter / weekend when some 2nd Division DJ plays it and it looks like an original.
  15. The reality is though Dave that Lifeline was recognised as the beacon of upfront music in this country, so no wonder people are upset. How often was it on? 4-6 times a year? On todays "scene" there are weekenders going on 50 weeks of the year (except Xmas / New Year) many purporting to offer "upfront / rare" rooms (a number of which are nothing of the sort). And as Andy eluded to in his text the clashing of venues is more ridiculous than ever. Then there is the ageing thing which you can't get away from. I can't be alone in making a conscious decision to stop going to Niters - about 15 months ago at Lifeline as it happens, purely because driving up north and staying up all night then driving home was f@cking up the whole weekend and creeping into a jaded Monday morning start. Even at weekenders I am usually done by 2-3 these days.

  19. Almost certainly most of them I'd say after the tariffs on releasing non British music were abolished in the mid 60s. But not all. I'd imagine most of them have long been absorbed into collections here. Nice post.
  20. Curious as to where that John Edwards "Loneliest house" came from?
  21. Trophy records will hold their prices, not sure much else will except for new / recent discoveries which by their nature have to be rare .
