  1. Never had a request like that in my life Ian. ...what sort of clubs are you DJing at? Mastermind Soul night? It's usually "Can you play Doc Peabody?" or "Are you going to be playing 60s' tonight Steve?" or "That last DJ was awful can you ramp the floor up a bit?"
  2. travelling with the Trouble party then? Have a good one.
  3. What's your name Patroniser Staten? Cheese indeed! Get your booties up to Hitchin Friday Simon - no excuses please
  4. That's a good point, it is another form of dumbing down. How about this instead: Punter: 'Excuse me Mister DJ, would you perhaps have (insert random tune name here) that you could play for me and my friends, it's one of our favourites and we'd love to hear it, it would really add to the enjoyment of our night, for which we've paid seven pounds entrance fee'? DJ Warwick Hunt: No, sorry. Does remind me of a story Jo told me once. Some misery at These old shoes, so she goes up to him and the conversation goes: Jo "What's up, you look really miserable?" Misery: "I paid £3 to come in here" Jo: "Oh really, well here's your £3 back, now drink up and F8ck off"
  5. Yers it did - paint stripper - don't touch it.
  6. Agree. There's nothing at all wrong with British.
  7. Those comments don't apply at Yarmouth Sean. At Yarmouth it's a case of what hasn't been played already and I am normally on after Uncle Sammy who keeps the floor very busy. Of course we really need to get Simon along there again so he can experience it all once again.
  8. So where are we? It's the Potteries but not Stoke It's a scotish flag, but not from Scotland, It was Gary's friends, but not Gary, It was the beginning of 1981, not 1980 It's on the right hand side, but upstairs. Holy Schmoly - We have to decipher what The Riddler says Robin
  9. Yes saturday night 3 am onwards is my PARTY set. All original cheese of course But tunes designed to keep people singing and dancing. I could of course play some rare funk and boogie that no one has ever heard, but that wouldn't really work would it? As for the rest of it.....hmmm when I am on late and the promotor says when you come on "Can you up the dancefloor a bit mate the last guys killed it", I am afraid that's when some cheddar has to come out.....but it's not all cheese moosh - you cheeky beggar Agree with Chalky you got to mix it up these days - something for everyone.
  10. They've said that they do now. you'll have to go and do an undercover inspection
  11. Maybe just a quick "face barb" with that sock thing of yours will do the trick next time
  12. It's not the same group Ian, but I know the point you are making and agree.
  13. ...well the scene is full of contradictions. You don't need to look very far to find them.
  14. Just didn't think the Scots were in the Stomper club. Maybe some of them on here can shed some light then
  15. Loads of new releases played John - look at the 76/ 77 period: Eddie Holman "This will be a night", Silvetti "Spring rain", Tavares "It only takes a minute" and "Heaven must be mising an angel", Anthony White on Salsoul, Brainstorm "Loving is really my game"......all massive at Wigan . What heady days they were. "Casanova" although was just another one in that line. Also Leon Bryant "hotsy Totsy" big at Wigan around the same time as Casanova, maybe a bit later. It wasn't just rare soul back then....Steve
  16. We can moan about the Scots for a lot of things, but I am not so sure we can lay this one at their door.
  17. But he won't be able to get his records out if you did that Gavin....
  18. Not at all, in the same way as it would p*ss you off if you turned up at a gallery and someone was selling illegal prints of one of your originals. Or if you went to an art show and there were a load of prints hanging up
  19. No Andy just a list of places for people to go who still want to hear original vinyl at their northern do's. For those that don't care this thread shouldn't be an issue as they'll go where they want anyway.
  20. Have found an old Blackbeat dated March 1981 in which Sam talks of his sacking from Wigan "for playing totally 70s and explaining my position in a letter to Black Echoes". The pieces are starting to fall into place.
  21. Kind of where I am too Mark - certainly with northern soul. Though obviously I also play modern at some gigs - different rules there of course as already discussed.
  22. Far from it Cambridge soul. At Soul Essence they had to tape down the controls with parcel tape to stop him "re-setting" the sound. At Skegness he comes on half way through my set and tells me the sound isn't right, twiddles the knobs and leaves with a thumbs up. A minute later the sound system owner comes up and says "What have you done with the sound, you've messed it up". Priceless. So yes Sam is king of the twiddlers. But we love him anyway.
  23. There is a Stoke connection Peter. I thought it said "Keep the faith F*ck the Funk"
  24. Fair call Rod, To me OV has history and meaning. Someones dreams and hopes of fame. Someone may have bought it, who were they, why did they buy it? etc etc. The band may have treasured it. Why did it fail? etc etc Don't get any of that with boots
  25. Haven't mentioned the death of your friend. YOU did. And I am certainly not belittling it. Nor have I rammed anything down anyones throat. Not sure about the ladies undies tho - what's that about?
