Lets be honest here, there was a wide variety of "sorts" that pitched up at WIgan on a typical saturday night in the 70s. there were the locals out for a good time, the 'dealers', Anna Ford and the Granada crowd according to Russ's book, first timers, tourists, kids, older kids, die hard soul fans. Lets not kid ourselves that Wigan was just full of died in the wool principled rare soul fans. Think Dewhirst's post about playing "Hawaii 5-0" and the kids loving it or whatever he said bears testament to that. It wasn't perfect so lets not try and pretend it was. Majority were soul fans obviously but there were some others there too for the ride. ............... And Jim Barry

On that basis no one would ever make a film about anything..... No one would ever paint a picture....... No one would put on a play........ No one would make a record....... Steve

Hi Simon, Well I think it is good that the directors are trying to get it as right as they can. But it's still a film at the end of the day and they shouldn't get too hung up about the wide variety of opinion on here. Re CTC is specifically featured a soul club in Liverpool, and two soul music DJs who loved their records, basically on the run from everyone so far more than just a Tamla soundtrack really. You should try and track down a copy it's very good, and there's a good actress in it too Steve

Yes made in 85 shown in 86. It was a 90 minute film. It was a road movie essentially but eminently watchable and very enjoyable. But that's my point, it started off with a club called the Sink club in Liverpol and it bore no resemblance to any clubs I've ever seen or a scene that I recognised. And despite that it still made for a really good film. So let's not condemn this new film because the holdalls aren't real 70s ones, or the filmmakers didn't rebuild a complete replica of the Wigan Casino on the back lot at Elstree Studios. Let's wait and see what it's like and judge it as a film, not as a historical reincarnation of how NS was in the 70s.

Exactly the same for me Pete. No older brothers at the Casino to advise me, or seniors at school with the proper stuff, I litetrally stumbled into northern from mainstream soul via this stuff. Mind you I soon realised it was naff end (not Wade in the water). back to the theme - this is a film - it'll either be a good story and watchable or not. Can't believe the hysteria on here about "preserving" NS's reputation when the web is full of Northern soul branded "tat" from clocks and watches to ladies underwear and donkey jackets. Steve

Yes absolutely right. Didn't see it as commercialisation back then. More like wow! Terrible to admit to now, but as kids thats how it was.

An excellent perspective on Quadrophenia. I remember seeing it as a new release and thinking "this ain't right". But it was just a film, entertaining or not entertaining. I could watch it again, knowing that it bears little resemblance to what actually went on. "Carry on Brighton...the musical"

Well I understyand the sentiment Simon, but the reality is it is a film - and with a film it is never going to be a totally factually accurate representation. Just be thankful it's not being produced in Hollywood with Mel Gibson playing the part of the hero Russ Winstanley pitched against Sam Mendes as the villian playing Ricardo Searlingi. From what I've seen is just about some yoofs in the 70s with a back-cloth of northern soul and chasing "birds" around - nothing wrong with that as a plot - it's not attempting to be a factual reincarnation of the Casino. It's just a film, it'll either be good, watchable, entertaining or it won't. I am not convinced people will see something set in the 70s as being "what NS is all about" today - they don't look at Miss Marple and think that's how people are today do they? There's more risk of them being mistaken about the scene today if they stumble into a Wigan shopping centre......when the annual pantomine is on. Doubt many new bloods will get into NS off the back of this either - if my kids are anything to go by they'll ask "Is that what it was like back then Dad? Ha Ha Ha". But yes we need to get new people into the scene, how? Well that's a different thread..........

It's obviously an old American expression, and yes think Godin used it first on the soul scene......
  12. Nice tune there Brett, never really had it's day. Other side is great too.

If I can watch "Life on Mars" I am sure I can watch this.
  21. The style has also changed, peoples tastes evolve too......lots more funkier edged sounds played now. Tastes do change. I think of some of the 80s new releases we used to rave over, they sound dreadful now......
  22. I'd rather not if it meant we had to shell out £2,000 for each box of moldie clapped out oldies.....
  23. Theres good music and bad music, simple as that. Some oldies are cr*p. Some newies are cr*p. Some newies are great, some oldies are great. I understand that a lot of people don't want to hear the same old bores, myself included. And that includes some good soul records - I'd be delighted never to hear Mel Britt again, ever. I am bored to death of it. But I always think that anyone that limits their choice to "oldies only" is somewhat musically retarded. It's the soul scene equivelent of those people that like Status Quo, Phil Collins etc. "because they always have" and despite the fact that acts like that haven't turned in a new tune for at least twenty years. A large part of the enjoyment for me is hearing something new.
  24. Nice one Dave. Just raided my Okeh shelf and found it.
