  1. Hi Ivor, I wouldn't class Phillip Wright as rare - there must be loads of them about. In demand yes and I have some sympathy for the "sheep DJ" point. Time was (when I got it) you couldn't give them away. And as someone who has all of Tyrone's released stuff he made a lot of very good records. The point though I think is that musical tastes of the people that go out to clubs change, and a lot of people are certainly going for those funkier type sounds these days. The worst one for me is that Angela Davis where she just shouts over a loop beat ("My love is so strong"). Compared to that Phillip sounds really strong. I have always had a soft spot for those Reid / Clarke etc Miami things - simple and not technically the best - but they usually do the job. I also like the Dash label - some great stuff on there like Jeanette Holloway, Helene Smith, Ann Sexton, Leno Phillips etc. Steve
  2. Groovesville. May 8th
  3. Somone should post up the original thread where we discussed this.
  4. Interesting Steve and I look forward to hearing it
  5. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks for the insight Wayne very interesting. Your dumpster finds are something else Think ML is actually a rare record. You know we plundered Detroit for everything for years in the 70s / 80s, and this one didn't show up until a few years ago. The amount of people going there, the amount of records taken etc. it would have turned up before if it was common. Probably not distributed as you say. Our biggest dealer at the time also had access to all Popcorn's stuff. I interviewed Popcorn in 1982 - long interview - no mention of it there either. I'd put it at 66, deffo not 1960, the production smacks of that fast Motown sound. Steve
  6. Not seen them before - some very funny bits.
  7. Right orig has narrower run out groove, and actually looks like a 60s record with a flat edge. Unlike the pressing which has a wider run out and more rounded edges if that makes sense. Also orig has BB223 A in run out in v small letters, boot has BEE 223 A in run out in spread out larger letters. I'm an anorak right?Anyway hope that helps....Steve
  8. Quite hard to tell it's all in the run out groove mate. Orig also has fainter ink than the boot. I have both so I'll have a look. Orig rarely comes up for sale.
  9. It was a joke Cat Though there is clearly an underlying debate between the "I am just happy we have somewhere to go and we mustn't complain" lot and the "I am not happy with venues not practicising what they say they do" lot. Steve
  10. Maybe the "Soul Police" should formally regulate the contents of all soul nights then How this would work is that each flyer would need to contain details of the anticipated content of the soul night at the bottom of the page like this: ------------------------ Contains: 60% stomping northern* , 20% mid tempo bores, 10% token modern oldies**,5% R&B***, 3% 10 year old House records, 2% Unknowns****. *If you suffer from High blood pressure or heart disease attending this night could be harmful to your health. Also note if you are allergic to Top 500 tunes, could cause an adverse reaction **Likely to contain old Mecca records and modern spins from the last 20 years - do not atend if you suffer an adverse reaction to Drizabone, or UBP ***May include Rock and Roll type sounds ****Unknown means unknown to the DJ playing it, not neccesarily the public
  11. Remember there was a phase of nicking badges. had one on my zip up jumper which I wore to / from WC. Anyway one of our lads had all his cut off his bag one night. Noticed this at the station going home- we all started laughing at him, and he said "Hang on Where's yours gone?". looked down on my jumper and someone had cut that off too! Sure they are all up on ebay now for £100
  12. Well in the words of the Bobby patterson song "Right place, wrong time"
  13. That's the problem, some people want variety, others don't. Life goes on as they say.
  14. Same everywhere it seems Barry. You simply cannot please everyone because the scene and what constitutes soul / northern / modern is now so varied. Events write ups full of people bigging up their mates sets too. When did it all become so complicated? As others have said there is good music and bad music in all types / styles.
  15. Hi Barry, does Lincs count as E Mids? Both good lads. But we're really winding "Dave" up with all this "modern" talk. Suspect what he wants us to say is that the only good night is one with non stop raw thumping uptempo northerm soul from start to finish no wishy washy midtempo soul and no "70s disco" music let alone anything more recent
  16. Fish, Mark Randle, Colin Brown for starters. Three top modern DJs in the East Mids
  17. Some new stuff and some good 80s/90s/00s. No northern for Preston
  18. Heard reports that at a recent local do a well known northern oldies DJ turned up and played his set of popular oldies off of a laptop. Across the KEYboard there!
  19. Yup agree with the sentiment of this. Though Angie Stone etc viewed as "oldies" amongst the modern crowd.... and as for Drizabone it's fooking ancient The acid test for me when doing one of these ATB nights is do they have CD players? If not, it's not ATB. Simple. As I am sure Imber knows most of the best new releases ain't on vinyl. (in fact many of them ain't even on CD either).
  20. Always thought "something for everyone" meant if you pitched up you'd get a free dodgy CD, or "soul patch" for your holdall, or even free food. Surely that's what it means?
  21. Hi Ivor, I've dug my copy out, not a bad little Miami funky thing. Thing to remember with those Miami things is that they had a very simple hypnotic rhythm. As such they ain't shabby and do have a certain charm. Anyway you should have got the entire Tyrone Davies repetoire long ago. Price on this seems to have gone a little haywire though - must be a 'big name' playing it or something. Steve
  22. Yes that's them. So I didn't dream it. Re the avatar - I was getting grief from other Palace fans on here since we are playing his new club on Sat and it's a veritable 12 pointer.
  23. Dee Edwards 1970 tune. There's another thread running on this....Steve
  24. Macca, Didn't he go on to become a famous Trade Union leader and champion of the old after he stopped making "soul" records?
  25. Strewth Cunnie - that is amazing. What's so worrying is that there must have been two people bidding on it that high! Didn't one or two DJs Yorkshire way get caught out with John & Weirdest reissues too? Or did I dream that?
