Hi Derek, long time no hear, hope you are well etc etc..... The John L Brown has always been a bit of a funny one. There are a few copies about and yet it commands a reasonable price, I've seen it sell for £200-300. Whether it is legit or not is open to some speculation. I was told once that it was a bootleg (though why such a slow side would be bootlegged is a bit of a mystery, unless for the Jamaicans or something) , and certainly the B side sounds like a "Wigan instrumental" from the mid 70s. Anyway it's a lovely record and one I too have played on occasions. Good luck in solving the mystery...I am sure it is actually Mancha as well by the way Steve

Interesting comments, and I got searched on a number of occasions before the Niter and on my way back to the station by various members of Gtr Manchester's finest, it does make you wonder.Of course clubs paying money is nothing new.....In Russ's fictional account of the Casino there were some genuine newpaper articles from the mid 70s about the drugs problem.....so mmmmmm, sometimes thinking is dangerous.

Yes I agree but at the time John was interested in putting out what he saw as "quality" modern and crossover, and in a way creating the demand. Some of the records were obscure and things like ELectric Express "Hearsay", Bobby Wayne, Magnetics etc became known to a bigger audience because of the Grapevine release. Had plenty of discussions with John on that topic at the time, and some with garry too. Fab article Plumby.

In the 60s they used vinyl. Styrene only came in for Phil La in the mid 70s, so the reissues and the later stuff like Paradise is on styrene. I have all the releases I think so can say this with some conviction.

Yes the ballad side is great too, but delighted to see this old SouL Essence spin making it across the divide.

A good pirce there Ted, so someone should snap up. Originally played in the very early 80s by various DJs. Kev Griffin was the first round our way (Kent) to champion it. Has also been big in Europe for some years.

Hi Wayne, yes plenty of copies play fine, it's the production that's a bit messy. Also tried this for several years got some reaction, not much. It's a great energy filled one for home though.

Yes quite a few copies about. It's not common, but it's not rare either. If that makes sense.....

Here is what I posted before Chalky: Right orig has narrower run out groove, and actually looks like a 60s record with a flat edge. Unlike the pressing which has a wider run out and more rounded edges if that makes sense. Also orig has BB223 A in run out in v small letters, boot has BEE 223 A in run out in spread out larger letters.
